Taking a moment here to brag and show some appreciation. For a school assignment, the 12yo had to write to a business. With no guidance from me and showing wisdom beyond his years, he decided to write to Home Run Inn Pizzaria.

A couple of days ago, he received a FedEx package from Home Run Inn containing free pizza coupons, pizza plates, magnets, and the nicest note. Some marketing intern definitely earned their pay! Home Run Inn now has a fan for life. 🍕#Chicago #Pizza #Food #DadThoughts

Unless it's a series (and I don't read a lot of those), I try to avoid reading the same author more than once a year. Spread the wealth, I guess? I'm making an exception for Stephen King, since he has two films coming out based on awesome books. I just finished The Long Walk and going straight into the audio for The Running Man, which I think I last read in high school. Earlier this year I did a re-read of Eyes of the Dragon.
#AmReading #FridayReads #Books #Bookstodon #StephenKing bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I'm re-reading The Long Walk by Stephen King in anticipation of the movie that comes out next month. Even though this story is one of my favorites by King - maybe in my Top 5? - I don't think I've picked it up in a couple of decades. Too long.

Hollywood doesn't always treat King's work with respect (looking at YOU, Stand adaptations... BOTH of you). I think this one is going to be really, really good, though.

#AmReading #FridayReads #Books #Bookstodon #StephenKing #Horror bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd is one of those books that makes me wish I kept better notes. I added it to my TBR ~15 years ago. Did a friend recommend it? Was it featured in a magazine? Did I discover it on the shelf in the bookstore where I was working (RIP to Borders # 33 in Deerfield, Illinois, USA) or the library? I have no idea. 🤔 It's a good mystery/thriller. Could be a bit more compressed, but I'm liking it. #FridayReads #AmReading #Books #Bookstodon #Mystery bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I discovered Stewart O'Nan when he collaborated with Stephen King on Faithful, their memoir of the historic 2004 Red Sox baseball season. Then I had the opportunity to briefly speak with him as part of my job - I helped him sort out a discrepancy with his hotel reservation at the 2011 ALA conference and he was very nice on the phone. Now I'm reading one of his books, Last Night at the Lobster. So far it reminds me of #TheBear in a good way. #Books #FridayReads #Bookstodon #AmReading bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I don't read a ton of graphic novels, but for some reason I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly wound up on my TBR a while back, and I'm glad it did. I like to change up my reading from book to book. Previous audiobook was horror/fantasy and maybe YA. Now I'm listening to The Sleepwalkers by Paul Grossman, which is murder mystery/historical fiction. Reading two (not intentionally) short story collections this week: Things We Lost In The Fire by Mariana Enríquez (ebook) and The Low Desert by Tod Goldberg (audiobook). The first collection seems pretty dark; I think I'll need something more lighthearted when I'm done with it. Goldberg is reliable for his crime/underworld stories. A couple were featured in Las Vegas Noir, a collection I read and enjoyed in 2023. #Books #Bookstodon #AmReading #FridayReads #ShortStories #Fiction bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

About halfway through the audiobook of The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton, a tale of suspense taking place in Amsterdam in the 1600s. There's already been one twist, and I'm looking forward to at least a couple more.

When searching for the cover image, I discovered that Masterpiece Theater did an adaptation featuring a pre-Queen's Gambit Anya Taylor-Joy. So, something else to add to my ever-growing watch list, 😖 #FridayReads #AmReading #Books #Bookstodon #HistoricalFiction #Fiction bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Just finished Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, which of course was the inspiration for the hit Broadway show. Truly a fascinating life, where sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. It makes one wonder what might have happened had Hamilton's life not been cut short.

This quote stood out to me:

"His faith in Americans never quite matched his faith in America itself." It was like he had a crystal ball.

#Books #FridayReads #Bookstodon #AmReading #History #NonFiction #Biography bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

An American Civil War spy drama ("epic" but I'm not so sure about that) that kicks off at a Passover seder? Sure, why not. It's timely, that's for sure. Started The Swallows by Lisa Lutz, and I'm already 20% into it and liking it so far. It's like an anti-Dead Poets Society, but where DPS kind of ignored private school cliques, - all the students seemed to mostly get along - Lutz leans in hard and it's far more interesting (don't get me wrong: I ❤️ Dead Poets Society). My main complaint is that the long list of characters - students and teachers - is hard to track in the #audiobook. #Bookstodon #Books #AmReading #FridayReads bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57) #Fiction

I was in Madison, Wisconsin, USA this week. Took a side trip to the House on The Rock. It's the setting for a pivotal scene in a certain fantasy novel that has since fallen out of favor with me.

1. It is exactly as the author described, which is to say, it is an EXPERIENCE.

2. I'm glad there were other people visiting. I know something bad is going to happen at some point, and I feel like I'm not going to be ready for it no matter how much I mentally prepare.

I went in blind; added the book to my TBR in 2019, have not read the description, and have no idea how the story is supposed to play out. #FridayReads #Bookstodon #Books #Amreading bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I had a rough go with David Copperfield. Added to the DNF pile about 15% of the way through. When I struggle with a book, I make sure my next read is going to be awesome, so I'm rewarding myself with a re-read of one of my favorite #StephenKing books (also, just one of my favorite books), The Eyes of the Dragon. I picked up a copy at the library for the 11yo to read, but he hasn't gotten to it yet, so I'm borrowing it. 😎 #FridayReads #Books #Bookstodon #Fantasy #AmReading bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

About half way through The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. It's a swashbuckling tale of a 13th Century Arabian pirate, complete with magic, sea monsters, demons, betrayal, etc. It works well in #audiobook format and I am enjoying it so far even though the transitions in the story are sometimes clunky. #FridayReads #Books #Bookstodon #Fiction #Adventure bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger is definitely a slow dystopian burn and I'm still trying to figure out exactly HOW dystopian it is. Resources seem limited and barter system is in place, but people are also using cell phones and there's still something resembling a federal govt. Speech Team by Tim Murphy is definitely not one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. I find the main character (Tom Murray - hmmm, is this semi-autobiographical?) to be a bit annoying, and I can't tell if that's how he's written or if it's the audio narration. Maybe both? I was borderline ready to DNF, but decided to stick with it because it's not completely terrible. 2/3 done and I feel like the climax won't be all that climatic. #FridayReads #Bookstodon #Books #AmReading #LGBTQ bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

So far, The Nature of Fragile Things is entertaining and quick-paced, though the characters are maybe a bit flat. It's a nice diversion if you enjoy historical fiction. #FridayReads #AmReading #books #Bookstodon #SanFrancisco bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

In the book The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep, David Copperfield was given so much love and appreciation that I thought, "Damn, maybe I should read that one." So here I am - decades removed from any class where reading a mid-19th Century story by one of the most celebrated authors ever is a requirement - picking up my dad's battered old Signet Classic paperback and settling in for almost 900 pages of very small print. 😎 #Books #FridayReads #AmReading #CharlesDickens #Bookstodon bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Working through The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss. Pretty sure I added it to my TBR on the rec of someone here on Mastodon, and I am so glad I did. So much great history that I didn't know and plenty of action to keep me interested. Alex Dumas (father of the author, yes, THAT Alexandre Dumas) was a genuine badass and it's fun to learn about him. #FridayReads #AmReading #Books #Bookstodon #Biography #NonFiction #Histodons bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is $1.99 today from your preferred ebook vendor. It's an excellent, heartbreaking, and mesmerizing snapshot in time of loneliness, the beauty and danger of great outdoors, and a hidden America in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Probably a book I will re-read again at some point, and I don't re-read much.

In 2007, it was made into a movie directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsh, and nominated for two Oscars.

#Books #Bookstodon #NonFiction bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

Finally got to The War For Late Night by Bill Carter. It was released in 2010 not long after the events it describes and still fresh when I added it to my TBR in 2012. Now, a dozen years later, my memory of what transpired is vague at best, but I do vividly remember Letterman eviscerating McCain for ditching his show to do a Katie Couric interview.

I was never a loyal late night tv watcher, and I never really liked Jay Leno.

#FridayReads #Bookstodon #AmReading #books #NonFiction bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

My audiobook choices have had their ups and downs in the back half of 2024, but I could not be happier to finish out the year with The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep by H.G. Parry. This one grabbed me right from the get-go and the narration is top-notch. The literary-themed storyline is brilliant and sure to be catnip to any book lover.

Of course, now I need get around to reading David Copperfield. 🙄 #Bookstodon #Books #FridayReads #AmReading #Audiobooks bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I have high hopes for The Book of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves ("Whoa!") and China Miéville, but for now the jury is still out. Admittedly, I'm not very far into it, but I'm not sure I like the writing style. Trick-or-treat report: Weather made for an interesting night. Started at a comfortable 63°F/17°C, dropped to 47°F/8°C in about 30 mins, which normally wouldn't be so bad but also had 45mph wind gusts. Evil Jawa was not as efficient as he could have been, but still finished w/ a decent candy haul. We stopped by #Chicago Bear Kyler Gordon's house, but nobody home. His neighbor on the other side of the cul-de-sac compensated by giving out full size candy bars. 😉🎃🍬 #HappyHalloween2024

I've read it twice and the only reason I haven't read it again is because, as you pointed out, it's kind of a doorstop. 🤣

Clarke wrote a collection of short stories called Ladies of Grace Adieu, which is sort of like a companion piece to JS&MN. Similar vibe and style, without the 800 page time commitment. Definitely worth checking out.

#Bookstodon bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)

I have the Kingsbridge series on my TBR. I remember very well that when the second book of the series (World WIthout End) was released in 2007, people raved about it. "A MUST-READ!" A friend picked it up recently and found it boring.

Looking for input from the tusk site's book community: should I keep the series on my TBR, or should I lighten the load by almost 5000 pages? #Bookstodon #KenFollett #Fiction bookstodon group (npub1ny7…uv57)
