xoro.social is running on hardware at my house rather than on my VPS the way teh.entar.net is. Last week its power supply blew and I had to cobble it back together using a donor supply until a replacement came.

Because I'm a weirdo, the permanent replacement supply needs to be one of those tiny Flex ATX size ones that fits neatly in 1U of mini rack. I had a pretty good 350W one before but it's discontinued, so I grabbed a 500W one. The reviews for it said "wow, this one's loud".

Wow, this one's loud.

I mean it's not datacenter-level decibels, but it's pretty loud for something this small that sits in my office. Before I could hear every time the CPU fan kicked on, but now it's just drowned out.

When it's running, my 3D printer is louder than any of this, and it's right next to my desk, so we're still under that threshold I guess.

For about a week I've been reworking the subscription interface for xoro.social to better support following the same feeds or people in more than one channel.

It felt like a YAGNI thing for a long time, but not supporting it has been a symptom of some shortcuts I'd taken that started to cause problems elsewhere.

Because of that, though, this small detail has its tentacles everywhere, making the work harder but disentangling it is already solving a bunch of other problems.

It feels good to fix stuff, and this is resolving a bunch of launch requirements, but flashy features would feel better.

I picked up an ESP32 CYD (cheap yellow display), overpriced on Amazon but still pretty cheap, and installed SquatchWatch (https://github.com/skizzophrenic/SquachWatch-CYD) on it. It immediately started locating the Wyze wifi cameras around the house. Pretty cool stuff!

The kind of code work that's absolutely suitable to give to my locally hosted clanker:

I just sicced it on my 25,000 line code base looking through the hundreds of instantiations of about 25 different ORM classes to find spots where I might have mistakenly set a particular boolean attribute wrong in a very specific way.

It has to find all of the candidates, then read through the context between instantiation and committing changes for missteps. It was instructed to only identify and not remediate anything.

This would have sucked miserably to do on my own, and it did a bang-up job, reporting in with five suspicious places in the code. Not all legitimate, but that's what human review is for.

Xoro lets you organize your RSS and ActivityPub subscriptions into channels, which works really nicely for keeping different topics prioritized differently.

Allowing things like this while keeping the UI from overwhelming new users has been a challenge, though. Initially it was just a follow button, same as Mastodon has, but all these corner cases pop up like what if you want to follow in more than one channel, or how do you move subscriptions around.

It works, but the more you flesh out its capabilities the more clunky it can get.

Specifically I tasked myself with getting a good workflow for items that are subscribed in multiple channels. The first version was horribly overcomplicated, and now I've been stuck poking at it for a few days until it feels simple and correct. It's taking some time.

It touches a lot of little spots, so a bunch of stuff is getting fixed along the way. So that's nice.

For the last couple of months I've been running a version of CUDA that was pointed out by unsloth as being buggy. "Unpredictable results", I think they said. It seemed to work fine.

Today a bunch of other stuff broke, so I stripped it out and swapped in the latest release, which is supposed to address the problems in the previous one

Fired up my clanker and asked it to take a look at an error that's been giving me trouble. I had asked it the same question a week ago and it was useless. It started off just plain slow. Like, 90% slower at reading the prompt, 50% slower at generating a response

But it found the problem. Due to miscapitalization of a variable name, a wacky exception was being thrown, citing problem on the wrong line of code altogether. Upon fixing, the error went away. It found it. It fucking found it.

I have to say I'm pleased. I've had this branch open for two months and have been pulling my hair out over this one dumb bug. I might be able to move on soon.

I've been stuck working on what was supposed to be a simple UI change for the last month. It surfaced a staggering array of insidious backend defects, many of which are quite difficult to resolve.

Doing some #3dprinting today and found myself wanting a mini random orbital sander on a stick, to reach into all the little details.

Then I realized I think they do make something like that. They aren’t meant for sanding, but they’re food grade silicone and dishwasher safe.

We got her from a Labrador rescue a couple of days ago. She is a perfect girl who can do no wrong and also keeps trying to eat our artificial turf.
