If we assume that demons are human hallucinations, that makes sense.

In European demonology and Nordic folklore a demon in human disguise can be recognized from the extremities. ( hooves, backward feet, six fingers). AI used to do this just few years back.

In medieval rites and Kabbalistic tradition asking demon to speak its exact lineage, or sacred scripture verbatim would generate garbled Latin, or invented lineages. Replace lineage with scientific reference and there it is.

In Eastern European and Chinese folklore demons can be trapped by forcing them to count things. Chain of Tought (CoT) models get sometimes into token exhaustion loops when you ask them to count repetitive patterns.

      These are also my beliefs.

Just war theory: Just because it's a crime does not mean it's wrong.

A Ukrainian citizen and former officer of the UKR armed forces faces court in Hamburg, accused of attacking the Nord Stream gas pipelines in 2022. Prosecutors think the Ukrainian government is involved. Apparently, the suspect told his wife it was a sanctioned operation. The attack happened outside German territorial waters, and nobody was killed.

For the sake of argument, let's assume the sabotage was sanctioned by the Ukrainian government.

Supreme Emergency (Walzer, Rawls): When a nation faces an imminent, existential threat (such as annihilation or subjugation), ordinary moral and legal rules must bend. Considering the scale of the emergency Ukraine is in and comparing it to the unwillingness of Germany to suffer minor inconvenience, it's possible to justify the involvement of the Ukrainian government against a friendly country.

German courts have judicial independence. The government can't interfere with the criminal prosecution. If Serhii K. is found guilty, he should be sentenced. Possible evidence of the Ukrainian government's involvement should be exposed.

At the same time, German government has no reason to take strong action against Ukraine. Germans should discuss among themselves how their own energy security compares to the existential fight for the survival of Ukraine, and how dependence on authoritarian regimes may be the root mistake.

#philosophy #ukraine #UkraineWar #germany #war #law

https://www.dw.com/en/nord-stream-pipeline-sabotage-suspect-on-trial-germany-hamburg/a-79647617

For example, consider:

"and we ask them to stop trying to find a practical, physically realistic solution/bypass to the fermion sign problem using proprietary models."

Sometimes solving the problem is more important than style, community involvement, or understanding the solution. I think an applied math recommendation would be:

"If the only way you can be bothered to solve the practical problem is dirty, please continue, but consider doing it a better way."

Does copyright protect your AI-generated content in EU? Apparently not. Content that is entirely generated by artificial intelligence is not protected by copyright. EU copyright law has strictly human-centric foundation.

Daniel J. Gervais: 'When you put your name on an article that's written by ChatGPT or Claude, you're basically putting a provenance mark on it saying: I take responsibility for this. I haven't written it, but I'm putting my name on it. That doesn't give you copyright, but it does give you liability for the content' https://euobserver.com/232898/interview-does-copyright-protect-your-ai-generated-content-in-europe-lets-find-out/

Gervais, Daniel J. and Shemtov, Noam and Marmanis, Haralambos and Zaller Rowland, Catherine, The Heart of the Matter: Copyright, AI Training, and LLMs (September 21, 2024). Available at SSRN: https://ssrn.com/abstract=4963711 or http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4963711

"Munich Local Court has held that AI generated logos do not enjoy copyright protection. Neither mere prompting nor the selection between several AI suggestions is sufficient as a human creative contribution. For businesses, this is ambivalent. On the one hand, content generated purely by AI can hardly be protected on an exclusive basis, which has implications for brand building and content strategies" https://www.germanlawinternational.com/intellectualproperty/copyright/from-the-printing-press-to-ai-how-the-eu-plans-to-modernize-copyright-law-164154/

#law #copyright #LLM #AI #iplaw #intellectualProperty #EU

Why this is very bad?

Rare as in out of print? Rare as in only a few copies left, but nothing valuable? Or rare as in humanity is losing something?

Libraries and booksellers, used book sellers routinely throw away books that can't be sold, donated, or circulated. They are pulped.

For actual rare books you can digitize them without destructing them. Internet Archive has Scribe Workstation.

Aristotelian physics lasted long not because it became dogma, but because it is a very good empirically grounded theory. The observation suggests some general considerations on inter-theoretical relations. "

A surprising number of problems do not require anything new, just broad knowledge of existing math and tireless work.

I have not seen any reports of AI inventing new and innovative techniques to solve hard problems that can be generalized to other problems. Maybe I have missed them.

The BIS is worried about macroeconomic instability, not about these companies. Apart from Oracle, and pure AI companies, big profitable hyperscalers should be OK even if the risks are realized. Stock valuations take a hit, but that's all.

Macroeconomic instability worries are a real concern because AI companies are roping others into sharing the risk.

SPVs and Joint Ventures share the risk. Private equity firms or third-party partners take on equity or debt to finance data centers, or provide energy.

Independent variables rule. Check out Condorcet's jury theorem if you don't believe me.

If individuals can share information different biases combine to better overall result. Homogeneity is an advantage only in a social context and communication.

In machine learning, ensemble methods are built on the principle of combining multiple models to produce a stronger final model. The key insight is that you must maximize diversity without degrading individual accuracy too much. I think this can be applied to discovery in science. More of the same discovers only more of the same. There is almost certainly exentric/accurate balance among individuals that produces best collective outcome.

Maybe that model will be used by mathematicians in the future. There will be organizations not unlike CERN that develops open models and software for personal use locally, and makes collective deals for cheap compute they buy bulk from neoclouds not bound to any megacorp. For bigger needs you gang up with like-minded mathematicians and prepare a proposal for massive compute time.

Heavy trucks (carrying heavy military equipment, ammunition, and fuel) are banned, and railway traffic is restricted and reduced mostly to passengers.

The arrangement has worked for both sides. The Kerch Bridge symbolically important to preserve for Putin. For Ukraine it ties up a massive amount of Russian air defense that could be used to defend military traffic. It is also hard to destroy unless you use tons of explosives.

If Russia cannot supply Crimea via land and ferry traffic is attacked, their only option will be to use the bridge again and Ukraine must attack it again.

ps. I think it's good that Russian civilians have safe road to leave when they have had enough.

Kpelle farmers sorted objects into functional groups (knife with orange, potato with hoe). They did not seem to have the ability for abstract categories that leads to taxonomies.

Then Glick asked them how a fool would categorize the objects, and they produced a perfect similarity-based taxonomy (knives with hoes, oranges with potatoes).

Anthropologists and intelligence researchers have discovered that different societies and cultures have different ways of meaning-making. Autistic people have difficulty picking up and learning social cues. Its signaling is slow. C. Elegans cognition is mix of of mechanical, chemical and electrical signals.

Mechanical stetching opens ion channels in the neurons, generating signals. Neurons can react external touching or internal movement. Internal mechanical feedback is part of it's thinking and movement.

[1]: as far as I know.

They just use calcium instead of sodium and the speed of the signal is much slower (seconds or minutes).

When a plant is stressed somehow (touched, or damaged) its cell membranes depolarize. Hybrids use a modified engine called the Atkinson cycle, which achieves roughly 40% efficiency, the Toyota Sienna in the video 41%. This increased thermal efficiency is the primary reason for their superior fuel economy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnUFH5GX_fI

#cars #hybrids

Compare this to the roughly 2–3 million 155mm artillery rounds Ukraine is projected to use in 2026.

That figure includes several tens of thousands of interceptor drones ( Gulf states are interested in buying) as well as about 20,000 unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).

Fiber-optic FPV drones are everywhere, but both sides are increasingly introducing more autonomous systems.

https://euromaidanpress.com/2026/03/31/ukraine-fired-its-nato-trainers-the-alliance-is-running-out-of-time-to-learn-why/

Bill Phillips ("Phillips Curve") used flowing water to model the economy in in 1949.

> according to his friend economist Richard Lipsey, "all the staff came out to humiliate this upstart idiot." Phillips showed how water flowed from the Treasury tank to chambers representing health and education (as the government spent money) and then got pumped back to the Treasury more or less rapidly as you pulled a lever to tweak the taxation rate. "It turned out after ten minutes that he knew more than everybody there, and they shut up," says Lipsey. When the bottom 50% earns an average of just over
$4,000 a year, it would give them a less than 2 percent income boost.

(In reality, that tax money would go to the rich countries.)

Oxfam frames these questions in a way that gives wrong impressions. Astronomers have already found almost 50 candidates that are both rocky and in the habitable zone (25 if we are being conservative)

With sample size of one we have no idea what f1 is. If nothing is found as our catalogues grow and observations begin to reach observational limits, there will be good reason to become pessimistic again.

IHL and the like do not exist just to reduce suffering, but to standardize and legitimize it in the public conscience so that war remains a tool of statecraft.

The 19th-century peace movements in the West were no joke. During the Hague Conventions, generals and legal minds determined what level of horror was militarily necessary and what level was economically or politically unsustainable. The conventions were the initiative of Tsar Nicholas II.. he and his ministers wanted to place limits on the lethal arms race because Russia was unable to compete.

The principle of superfluous injury, used to ban certain weapons, keeps a war something young men can volunteer into. In 1995, this principle was used to ban blinding laser weapons. A relatively easy method to permanently blind thousands of soldiers on the battlefield threatened the viability of war as a tool.

"You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out."
– Letter from William Tecumseh Sherman to James M. Calhoun, et al. (1864)

He is also a professor who studies this specific area, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

The main point of the article, as I see it, is that Wikipedia has a structure geared toward older generations. Young people don't read long articles, and older generations tend to calcify the organization.

I agree with all of the above. This also explains why there are fewer young volunteers. You don't become a contributor if you don't read the articles, especially if the style feels outdated or inconvenient.

On the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with projects that gradually decline in popularity while sticking to what the organization knows how to do. Wikipedia is losing readers and is becoming a more 'academic' and elite institution for new generations, but it still provides a valuable service.

---

A collaborative society should not mean that collaboration must happen within a single institution.

Wikipedia’s content is not bound to the organization itself; Gen Z and Gen Alpha can create their own organizations and short-form or conversational interfaces using Wikipedia as a source.

#wikipedia

Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy.
2. Create secret prisons where torture takes place.
3. Develop a thug caste or paramilitary force not answerable to citizens.
4. Set up an internal surveillance system.
5. Infiltrate and harass citizens' groups.
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release.
7. Target key individuals.
8. Control the press.
9. Cast criticism as espionage and dissent as treason.
10. Subvert the rule of law.

Those 10 things happened after 9/11 and were never fully rejected, legally or institutionally. Now, they are occurring on a different scale. It feels like an iterative development, with the severity increasing at each step.

(he has made this argument several times btw.)

The massive success and wide adoption of life-changing technology does not, in itself, mean there is no bubble, nor does it guarantee that productivity will jump as Nadella suggests.

CEOs tend to think in terms of microeconomics, which behaves like an open system: 'a penny earned is a penny saved.' In this scale we are thinking in macroeconomics, which has closed-system dynamics and feedback loops: penny saved is not a penny earned.

In general its seems, that no matter how much you innovate technologically, the contribution is just 0.5-2.0 percent to economic growth due to all feedback loops in the system. On average just around 1%.

WP page on Productivity Paradox is a good intro:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Productivity_paradox

"You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics." - Robert Solow

In the book, Hitler demonstrates a strong understanding of propaganda.

It is almost certain that Hitler was reading Gustave Le Bon's The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind (1895) while in prison writing Mein Kampf, as the parallels are undeniable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crowd:_A_Study_of_the_Popular_Mind

Although Hitler does not mention Le Bon by name, he mentions Lord Northcliffe (who was in charge of British propaganda) and openly admired British propaganda during WWI. Northcliffe was enemy to emulate.

Later, Hitler likely learned from Edward Bernays through Goebbels, who admired American advertising techniques.
