2026-10-28T21:49:13Z

Waiting on the doormat, where I luckily managed not to step on it as I walked in, was a slim card envelope containing a mystery song!

Obviously the mystery is not what the track is, only what it sounds like, as I’ve been unable to find it posted online anywhere. This copy was going cheap, so I’ll have a listen tomorrow and let you know. Is it a hidden ukulele gem? ¹

¹ Almost certainly not.

2026-10-28T21:10:23Z

Back from Manchester, as I had to go to the office to hand in my laptop, work mobile, I.D. card etc, prior to retiring at the end of the month. Since I live in Leeds these days it wasn’t a quick trip; I’ll also pay for it with a few days of exhaustion, as happens with any such exertion thanks to Long Covid, the reason I’m being forced to retire in the first place. It was a little strange, since everyone moved to a completely different location while I was off sick (I’m telling myself it was coincidence rather than an attempt to avoid me), so this was both my first and last visit to the new office.

Came away with a retirement card signed by some of the staff, a box of Lindor chocolates, and an Amazon gift voucher… and that’s twenty years, all wrapped up and done. Longest job I had, that. On Hallowe’en I’ll be a retiree, spending my time at home playing the ukulele and looking after the cats… Hang on, that’s what I’ve been doing for months already…

2026-10-25T14:42:29Z

The ukulele isn't only the sound of Hawai'i and vaudeville, it's also behind some of the greatest expressions of culture and art from the hundred years or more.

And then there's this.

I've posted a song sheet for this number before, but I was transposing it to C and thought I may as well throw this version out there as well. "Doc" Cox, AKA Ivor Biggun, made it to number 22 in the UK charts in 1978 with his uke-driven single "The Winker's Song (Misprint)", despite / because of being banned by almost every radio station, but this track from the same album is slightly toned down in comparison. Slightly.

Here's the man himself demonstrating why he's considered something of a cult¹:

I know what they mean, but if someone referred to “the late 1900s” wouldn’t you immediately think they meant a time in the region of 1990 rather than, say, 1908?

Something triggered my brain to assemble this very poor joke yesterday, despite my complete lack of interest in, and only superficial knowledge of, Harry Potter. So anyway:

“Did you try on the Sorting Hat?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“And now my ting is sore.”

I spend so much time seeing people with ukuleles that whenever I look at a photo of someone playing the guitar it looks like one of those old novelty photo postcards, the ones with a trick black and white picture of someone riding a grasshopper, or standing next to a carrot the size of a bear.

Too tired to keep at it for long, but I spent part of the day trying to be a little more methodical about my ukulele practice. Still got sidetracked strumming a few Tin Pan Alley tunes, despite which I managed to focus on some fingerpicking exercises from Aaron and Nicole Keim’s book. Minor progress achieved.

OK, I definitely have a reference book with information about pentatonic scales around here somewhere…

I am absolutely the worst person in the world at keeping track of what I am trying to learn. My brain has a terrible lack of respect for discipline and consistency, even though I like routine and order. I mean, routine and order should make trying to learn something easier!
