I have been through this wrestle. I have landed on a way forward (for now) that is working for me. It is my theory that as more and more high level automation strips away the physical and or mental friction from the things we call work, we have to deliberately build purpose and tangible friction back into our daily lives. We can do this through a relationship to food, physical movement, human connection, and a craft we choose for love rather than pure market output. I call it The 4F’s. Food, fitness, family/friends and a chosen focus. There is a whole self evident framework behind this that gives me direction on a daily basis. It provides so many tasks and activities that are full of meaning and purpose that it can at times be hard to keep up! I believe that as work fundamentally changes, the 4F’s can offer someone a sound way to navigate this unfolding world with genuine fulfilment and pride. I’m not saying it’s the best or the only option, but it’s a starting point that is working for me and might bring some value to you. All the best. 🙂

Nowadays, all the parts of my work that used to be low quality are high quality, because Claude is a better programmer than I am. But the parts of my work that used to be good haven't survived. I might be trying to do something worthwhile, but because I haven't actually engaged with the problem I can't make anything better than slop materialize. The glory has departed.

Flotilla has greatly profited from me using AI to code, because the good parts only I could build were already there, and there was a lot of bad stuff that needed to be fixed.

But the way I feel about other projects that I haven't gone through that journey with is that they are garbage. Total trash. They are as valuable as the tokens I used to generate them. Because there's nothing really there. There is nothing to love. There is nothing singular. They are disposable, fungible.

When people refer to themselves as "idea guys" it means they suck at doing real work. But their ideas can only exist if someone takes the time to make their ideas a reality. But in the New Age of AI, idea guys can finally realize their genius, without being held back by a bunch of narrow-minded technicians!

But I think it will turn out that there wasn't actually any genius there in the first place, and everything that was of value about the original idea was actually discovered during the process of building it by the people who did the work to make it a reality.

Software as an art, or a craft — as a thing which is an object affection — is dying. This is fine, the affection was probably misplaced in the first place. A new kind of software — the stuff we create for ourselves, that no one else will ever see — will probably absorb some of that affection. The rest will be commodified.

I think this goes for every industry, by the way. An accountant can feel proud of his spreadsheet, a plumber of his solder, a salesperson of his pitch, even a developer of his agent harness. He can love the work of his hands and have affection for it. It can be singularly valuable to someone, and a conduit of love between the people concerned.

Does an assembly line worker feel affection for the parts he stamps out, or the people who receive them? Is oil extracted with heart? Are the foundations of skyscrapers filled in with love? Does the dollar store worker bask in the sunshiny faces of the children purchasing their very own extruded plastic disposable pseudo toys?

Maybe they do. I do think that wherever humans use tools, there will be affection. It reminds me of the nose art pilots used to paint on their bombers. "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

Maybe means I should buy a mechanical keyboard, I don't know. DAU and MRR probably engender warm fuzzies in some types of people, but I'm not one of them.

Commodities are not necessary for a good life. A community can live without commodities, and survive. If everything were hand-made, pride and affection would ubiquitous - and its absence would be traceable to a character flaw in the worker. If every meal came from an animal who had a name instead of a number, every meal would embody gratitude and grief like no store-bought meal could.

I yearn to live that life and check out of this Terry Gilliam-esque Hotel California life, I say as I glance out the side of my eyes at the people I know who have just bought a couple dairy cows and moved out to some acreage, and keep typing.

Am I a coward for wanting to stay where it's comfortable and secure? Where my skills (or what's left of them) are in demand? Is my heart too bound up with the bounty of the market that I have become a commodity myself?

Or am I a whiner for being so sad about losing the drudgery of programming? For not wanting to live on a diet of petrochemical-derived macro-nutrients? For not wanting to spend hours a week in a car driving to an office where I work by myself?

Just some pushback because I think there is a subtle sleight of hand at play by using the carpenter's square metaphor. A carpenter's square measures objective physical geometry, which anyone (including non carpenters) can test against 90 degrees. A moral square doesn't measure physical geometry, it measures a chosen value system. If two people hold moral squares that differ by even 1 degree, over time they build completely different lives and societies while both insisting their square is true norma. Calling a chosen value standard a square sounds objective, but it switches a physical measurement system for a personal preference system, which inevitable leads to a circular argument situation.

I totally get that. I have a very similar experience. The biggest impact I’m finding is definitely personal. However I am very close though to being able to put a price tag on how using AI has helped reduce the cost of a previous software as a service application. My ChatGPT/Codex plus subscription is about to save the business that my wife and I own and operate close to $5000 annually. From my perspective this is a big deal! And on top of that if I think creatively it is just the beginning. To be honest though as I mix and mingle in my little corner of the world I am not hearing any stories of how AI is financially impacting peoples lives in a positive way, yet, either in a business setting or personally. Maybe I am early?

Most of my recent personal experimentation has been with a personal agent based on an OpenClaw architecture. It’s been fascinating! I have bought into the thesis that the most important AI is the one that is in between you and the big massive companies. Not sure if I’m right yet. Cheers.

The only answer (he claimed) was that the surface of the Earth is curved." After reaching this conclusion, Eratosthenes then famously factored the length of the two shadows with his assumed distance to the Sun and recorded a measurement of the globe Earth's circumference close to what heliocentrist astronomers still use today.

The fact of the matter is, however, that Eratosthenes, Sagan, and others are simply incorrect in their assumption that this would only be possible on a curved Earth. In reality, the exact same results occur on a flat Earth with a local Sun.

Eratosthenes’ calculations were made assuming the Sun to be millions of miles away so that its rays would fall perfectly parallel even in points as divergent as Syene and Alexandria. Anyone familiar with the phenomenon known as crepuscular rays, however, knows full well that the Sun's rays simply do NOT fall perfectly parallel, especially at such distant points, rendering the entire argument moot. Furthermore, using sextants and plane trigonometry, by measuring the Sun’s angle at two points on Earth simultaneously and factoring their distance from each other, the Pythagorean theorum reveals that the Sun is NOT millions of miles away, but instead less than a few thousand.

High altitude balloon footage has also filmed lighting hot-spots on clouds further proving the Sun to be local and acting as a spotlight. Therefore if globe believers wish to be honest, they must admit it is their faulty assumption that only a distant Sun with parallel rays could produce such results which has led to their faulty conclusion of a curved Earth, because Flat Earthers have always maintained that the Sun was local, and the very existence of crepuscular rays render the entire experiment invalid.

Not cheap. I’m burning through credits like crazy. I actually have avoided looking at the total using the excuse that I am doing research! Will take a look and report back. I like the vision behind Intelligent Internet. Emad Mostaque (ex Stability AI) has a narrative I can get behind. I figure having something like an OpenClaw hosted by a 3rd party is a good way to eventually have a conversation with my family about giving it a try rather than running one on my own machine and then having to convince them to follow. I figure that can come later.

I had a bit of a false start because I didn’t really know how to use it from a personal perspective. I’m doing a bunch of small experiments including tracking a variety of tasks, health data, running a small business I have set up specifically for the trial, a cooking coach, household finance, pet health to name a few. I will try a small coding project later this week. It definitely required a different mindset than I was using with ChatGPT. All good so far.

When you mention that God is a logical necessity for you, you are using your own human intellect, observation, and reasoning process to reach a conclusion and then step through the door. Everything you wrote, including your appreciation of Anselm's framework, is the result of your brain actively evaluating inputs and attempting to make sense of reality.

The paradox rises once you step through the door. By adopting Anselm's credo ut intelligam (I believe so that I may understand) or claiming that human understanding must bow to divine authority, you are essentially using reason to establish a foundational position, and then using that same reason to justify suspending or subordinating critical intellect whenever it conflicts with the system.

If human reason is competent enough to evaluate reality, conclude that God is a logical necessity, and recognize biblical authority in the first place, it cannot suddenly become untrustworthy or flawed the moment it interrogates the framework from within. To trust reason as the key that unlocks the door, but then label it as fallen or “lean not on your own understanding” when it leads outside the lines, feels like an internal double standard.

Regarding wisdom and its relationship with fear, awe and reverence, these are cognitive appraisals processed in the human brain. Wisdom itself is not an external download, it is the distillation of knowledge, real world experience, and honest reflection. Defining faith as bowing the intellect sounds like humility from inside the system, but another perspective is that it acts as a mechanism to avoid the discomfort of sitting with uncertainty or admitting where a system lacks coherence.

There is also a subtle cognitive bias at play when we lean on pre packaged apologetics or institutional authority, such as William Lane Craig's Reasonable Faith or selected proof texts. Borrowing pre made argument structures can give the appearance of intellectual rigor, but it often serves to protect foundational priors from raw, unshielded examination.

For me, moving away from that prepackaged framework was never about arrogance or spiritual superiority. It was simply refusing to drop the tool of reason after using it to walk through the door. Taking full, undelegated responsibility for my own mind means applying the exact same standard of cognitive discipline to every claim.

Oh! Wow! I have a nice growing list of positive experiences where I enlisted the help of AI to make my life better. Everything from one off medical intervention to dealing with government bureaucracy to upgrading or learning new computer and life skills. Sometimes I use ChatGPT/Codex but most of the time it’s been using a persistent personal AI assistant running on OpenClaw via Intelligent Internet. So if I understand you correctly, you are entertaining the idea that human biology is the only substrate that conscious sentience can be experienced on, but, are also suggesting that out of many individual conscious sentient experiences “grows/evolves” a collective version of consciousness that exists independent of and is distinctly different to the individual version. That is super interesting and very Jungian. Budo then leverages what Jung calls the collective unconscious. From an epistemic perspective, because we still don't have a proven scientific model for how matter creates subjective awareness in humans, I try to hold all hypotheses around this subject lightly rather than closing the door on any of them. What leads you to be so certain about that boundary? Do you see sentience as strictly tied to carbon biology, or something non physical that no material substrate can replicate?

Oh, I am definitely being serious! Consciousnesses being a product of computation is a reasonable proposition. In that camp, if there is a non zero chance that the substrate on which computation takes place makes no difference to the quality of the computation then it’s obvious that some would argue that there is a potential for the existence of digital minds alongside biological minds. My view is that it’s not about saying anything that is true, rather it’s about saying things that align with your follows. I purposely avoid replying to 99% of your posts that involve a certain subject because I fear the mute button more than a continued opportunity to have dialogue on less controversial subjects. Yes it’s free speech but if I go full ham and machine gun spray my hard earned life lessons around without some level of civility then my Nostr experience WILL be limited to a blanket of comfort. Character shaping, critical thinking skills, practical capabilities and mindsets are made in the home, not outsourced to an institution. Ok. So before I take back my apology, my response is based on the assumption that a person has gone to the doctor because they have a set of symptoms that are affecting their health and general wellness negatively. If so then I would reiterate my point that there are many conditions where a doctor does not need to include in his/her baseline inquiry any questions whatsoever about diet and lifestyle because there would be nothing a person could have done via diet and lifestyle that would have avoided the initial condition/disease or help with management or cure. Now, I am thinking about this from a physical health perspective and I have noticed in the past that you have commented on some of the practices associated with mental health. Maybe that is where my wires are getting crossed? Anyways, I don’t think it is appropriate to throw all doctors under the bus because of the absence a line of questioning that may in fact be 100% warranted. 🙂

It works well. It’s a “smokeless” fire pit. We had the drum from an old washing machine for about 10 years then went to this purpose built one. While not totally smokeless, it is much reduced. This will be the third season with this one. Last year we cooked maybe 20+ times in it. Would easily recommend 😁
