Just finished watching season 5, and I am almost finished reading Book 1. Your assessment is spot on. I wondered how the stories would line up - reading vs watching. My opinion, based just on Book 1 / Season 1, is that they compliment each other very well. It reminds me of Project Hail Mary. If you just see the movie or just read the book, you are in no way robbed of anything, but if you take the time for both, you will have a wonderful experience.

Putting the costs of this mutated Tetsuo aside, it is not, nor can it ever be in this form, relied on. As an experiment, I asked ChatGPT for a list of ten poems with a certain theme to share with a student. Seven do not exist. I wish they did; they sounded perfect. And that's the issue, AI is not an intelligence. It is a data-driven mimic. They have fed it enough human information, that it picks out patterns in your queries, and responds with what has the highest likelihood of being an answer. Sometimes it's correct, but sometimes it's not. For the seasoned programmer or teacher, that's not ideal, but inaccuracies can be compensated for. For students and the juniors in their careers, this is a disaster.

For our next book club meeting in a few weeks, we're reading End of Story by A.J. Finn. We read a wide range of books - from YA to graphic novels to thrillers to fantasy. Lately our books have been good ... decent ... but not unanimously WOW! Basically our group rating averages to a 3 or 3.5 out of 5. I would love to have a book recommendation that when we all read it, we all love it. My personal opinion has always been that permanent tattoos should be serious choices and should be a reflection of serious beliefs or experiences. That doesn't mean they can't be cute or funny, but they aren't as easy to change as a shirt you bought at a tourist trap and are now embarrassed to wear, so maybe analyze that design carefully. I have had several ideas for a design and walked away from them because they weren't right. It took me years to choose my first, and I have been contemplating my next since before the pandemic. One day, the right design will come along. Among some of my peers and coworkers, my view on this topic is rather "square," but I don't care. Explanations of my tattoos will never be as shallow as "We were drunk, and I was dating this girl who was really a big fan, and so we both...."

While I have always been in a similar position when teaching history, Liza, one of the best things that ever happened to me was teaching an Asian-American student at my school who is known to have a dislike for much that is American. It was my job to teach U.S. History to a person who had zero interest in learning it. (Note: my private school does 1-to-1 instruction.) Several teachers mentioned they weren't sure how someone could teach a student with this attitude.

I began by telling the student that while we would be learning the history of the U.S., we would be learning it through the eyes of others (other countries, Native Americans, immigrants). It was quite the challenge, let me tell you, finding resources for all the topics that fit that criteria, but I managed.

They still weren't happy that they had to learn it, but they admitted that my efforts made it better than it would have been. I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to face that challenge. It pushed me to dig deeper, to reach out to teachers in other countries, to see things that were new to me, too. I incorporated several of those lessons into my regular curriculum, so I feel my other students benefited also.

Once upon a time, workers went to factories and produced physical things. Owners could literally show the place and the product.

And then services and ideas began to be the product. Services were still easy, because the workers were visibly doing things.

But the ideas...well, what to do?

Those in tune are fine with the workers being at home (the computer doesn't care if you're in your underwear), because they are comfortable with how to access and demonstrate the product.

But those whose measurements are still what they can *see* are having a challenge. If they can't see the product, they want to see the workers. How else can they know work has been done? How can they demonstrate that to others if called upon to do so?

I won't put it all on generational differences, but there is some of that. It is definitely a mindset difference, though, and eventually those who are operating with the older one will be phased out or see things in a fresh way.

In the meantime, the struggle continues.

For me it's the trip we took to my Aunt Jeanette's in Canada. As a kid, it really felt we had gone to the other side of the planet. Distance: 2670m (4297km). If you could drive that straight through without stopping, it would take 40 hours.

I never use the overhead lights in my classroom (office). I have softer regular homelike lamps. I have fidgets, and sometimes we play music at a very low volume for background sound if needed. I have had a few students who prefer to sit on the floor sometimes, so I have a nice rug for those moments if need be. I have to meet my kids where they are and where they learn best. They are not checkboxes to me.

Many of my students do not truly learn things just from me. They bring things from other classes, home, friends, video games, and the Internet.

My main personal goal - how I structure my classes - is to give them practice with the skill of critical thinking. It is amazing to see a student make a connection between something from outside our class to the topic we’re discussing.

I have a lot of flexibility, and I have often thrown out my plan for the day so a student and I can explore something other. When the urge to know the answer to a question is there, and I don’t know or am not confident in my answer, I say so, and add, “Let’s look it up.” I use the chance to relate the exploration to our class if it’s possible. If not, I write it down as critical thinking and executive skills support.

I teach multiple subjects, and I explain to them that the reason I can teach English, history, psychology, MS science, Biology, and theatre (among others) is because I have engaged in such explorations all my life. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to … needed to. And I’m still doing it, and at this point I tell them something I have learned from them.

One of my former students just visited campus last week and told me they have changed their major and added a second, unrelated minor. “I just thought, why not? You always said we should learn more about what interests us just because we never know what we might use it for.”

The bathrooms at the school where I teach are unisex. There are free pads and tampons available. No one has complained, thrown them away, or committed childish pranks with them. It’s just normal that they are there. I have to remind myself sometimes that other schools do not have the culture (and students) that we do, but if the expectations were established early and consistently, then all schools could have that.
