What is low/med/high a calculation of? IOW, when someone endorses you, is it like favoriting them, thumbs up or thumbs down (i.e., “down” de-ranks them), or a rating system (e.g., 1-5 stars)?

I could see how thumbs up/down or ratings can lead to low/med/high scores, but just a simple “I endorse” toggle won’t have much signal, unless it’s treated as a percentage against followers or some kind of static thresholds (e.g., <25 is low, <100 is med, etc.).

That’s what I’m trying to understand, too. In PGP, the concept of vetting often involves meeting and looking at IDs or equivalent to check identities, and you sign their key with yours and set a trust level.

These levels can mean different things to different people, and how you vet also differs, but ultimately, you’re trying to say, “I trust (to some low/med/hi degree) this is Alice.”

Of all the interpreted languages, PHP has the strongest typing, and it’s enforced at runtime. Other languages that have types either don’t enforce them at all (and thus rely on a static analysis step) or enforce them at compile time, which can still miss some odd runtime edge cases.

Before AI, I felt like I could review PRs and, based on whose code I was reviewing, I could be more trusting and casual with my review, since I knew they usually wrote good code and paid attention to details. Now, with AI, no one pays attention to details, so I have to deeply scrutinize every PR, which takes twice or 3x the effort.

AI agents almost always add things that aren’t necessary, or they follow anti-patterns based on the surrounding legacy code context.

Unfortunately, the corporate funding required to support a single foundation—much less two—doesn’t exist. The PHP Foundation is facing this challenge, and I don’t want to create obstacles that could get in the way of their ability to secure funding. The community needs to encourage companies to donate to the PHPF. Once it is healthy, we can consider expanding its mission to support community efforts (or add a community foundation that that coexist in a healthy ecosystem).

I tried to get Stable Diffusion to generate a custom PHP “elePHPant” (see here for examples of what I mean: https://elephpant.me), but it kept failing because it hadn’t been trained on anything that looked like that.

So, I had to train a LoRA on a bunch of photos of the plush toys. Even still, it’s limited in its ability to generate images of them from certain perspectives and angles because I don’t have enough training data to show the toys from all possible angles.

There’s the art that comes about through remixing culture, and there’s the art that comes about from stretching oneself to innovate and create something completely new. I don’t think AI can do the latter—even when prompted by a human. It can only produce art that bears similarities to the data it was trained on. I don’t know when #Cyberpunk2077 came out for macOS, but I just discovered it’s available on Steam, and I’m finally playing it. So far, it feels a little like a cyberpunk version of Fallout 4. A lot of the gameplay is figure-it-out-on-your-own.

Finally listening to Cory Doctorow (npub1fdr…lvhs)’s Picks & Shovels. I have to admit the Prologue took me a while to get through (sorry, Cory!), though I think it was essential. The first few chapters are excellent! As always, Wil is amazing, and I can tell he’s been working on his accents—they all sound fantastic. I love where the story is going so far.

Oh! This is what I was missing. Nexstar is a large conglomerate that owns many of the ABC affiliate stations across the country (including my local affiliate WKRN in Nashville), and they are the ones who decided to pull Kimmel from their broadcasts. Since it would no longer run on most of their affiliates, Disney followed suit and canceled the show.

Aren’t FCC licenses just for use of broadcast frequencies? And the licenses for those frequencies are split among hundreds of affiliates across the country, owned by various companies?

Multi-channel cable providers also need a license, I think, but afaik, you don’t need a license to have a cable channel or an internet streaming service.

So, how many folks would be affected if ABC could no longer broadcast over the frequencies allotted to WABC-TV in New York?

HR 3860 allows the Secretary of State to revoke the US passport of anyone “whom the Secretary determines has knowingly aided, assisted, abetted, or otherwise provided material support to an organization the Secretary has designated as a foreign terrorist organization.”

There’s no due process, and the only way to overturn it is to “request a hearing to appeal such denial or revocation not later than 60 days after receiving notice of such denial or revocation.”

I still can’t understand how to read a Caddy config file. Maybe I’m just dumb. And most sites that turn up in searches use an old config format that Caddy no longer uses. 😢
