With Astrodon shutting down in the coming months it's time to look for a new home instance. Any recommendations on an #astronomy / #astrophotography focused mastodon instance?

I recently developed a thing for supernova remnants. I find these rather fascinating because these aren't huge nebulous regions but rather delicate strings of space filament. Or to be more scientific: ionized hydrogen and oxygen (and maybe sulfur but I don't have the gear to capture that).

Unfortunately these are rather dim and thus require tremendous amount of integration time and the sky gods aren't kind to me. This is ~14 hours worth of data and I would need at least double of that. But the skies are rather cloudy. And if they aren't, there is still the bright moon and fog ..

So this is a mere work in progress and I can hopefully add some more data this month, otherwise I would need to wait for next year.

Pictured is Simeis 147, nicknamed the spaghetti nebula. The bright red dot to the upper left is SH2-242 - without a fancy nickname.

#astrophotography

I'm usually not into "regular" #photography but with all the clouds and fog there is no way to do astrophotography right now. So instead I took my old Canon and wandered around for a bit. This is my favourite image from this session, a crane in heavy fog.

NGC 1499 - the California nebula.

This one is an emission nebula. There is a bright star which will cause the the surrounding gases to emit light. With specific filters I can image only the light of specific gases and omit everything else - even moonlight to certain degree. But this will cutoff everything else (as intended) and make the image quite boring - at least for this type of nebula. So I captured some broadband data to get the surrounding dust.

The result is a false color image with hydrogen mapped to red and ozone mapped to blue and green to get this orange color. Background dust is mostly as it would look like in a true color image.

#astrophotography

It's that time of the year again. Autumn is here as is the andromeda galaxy. It's high in the sky and you'll probably see lot's of images of it in the following weeks - if you follow the #astrophotography tag ;)

This galaxy is our closest major galaxy and can be seen with the naked eye, if your sky is dark enough. Just don't expect to see the details from this image. It will more look like a bright smudge.
