The engineering of starvation is not merely hunger brought about by war; it is a pattern of systematic deprivation in which the essentials of life — food, water, and medicine — become tools of pressure.

From restricting the entry of humanitarian aid to destroying the foundations of local food production, including farmland, bakeries, and water sources, the food crisis continues to deepen, depriving people of their most basic right: the right to survive.

Today, Gaza faces a new wave of hunger amid UN warnings about the risk of famine and malnutrition. When food is deliberately kept out of reach, hunger becomes a threat to life, and silence in the face of it becomes an abandonment of our shared humanity.

While browsing through my old photos, this one caught my attention: a cup of coffee and a little peace and quiet that now seem further away than I can reach.

I’m a coffee lover, and spending long hours in front of the computer has made me depend on it as a stimulant to keep me awake, almost like a little ritual that helps me regain some energy amid life’s many demands.

Can you imagine that I now miss even drinking that cup of coffee? I miss those ordinary moments I never thought would one day become memories I would long for.

Our problems seemed so big back then that we believed they were the end of the world. In the midst of our disagreements, we forgot that there were so many things to be grateful for, and that the peace and quiet we sometimes grow tired of may one day become the very things we wish for most.

Today, as I look at this photograph, I find myself wondering: Were our problems really that serious? Or did we make them bigger than they were because we had no idea what life would look like when it took away things we could never get back?

Sometimes, we need to step away from the noise of our days to realize that what we once saw as the end of the world was nothing more than a small obstacle along the way.

Good morning, a morning of hope, and a morning of faith that when God takes away something we love, leaving a wound in our souls that no one else can see, He is still able to replace our pain with a peace that touches our hearts and a comfort that helps us find our way back to ourselves.

Whenever I feel weak, I return to old photographs, to days before we lost almost everything. I look at my children’s faces and remember the little moments that brought us so much happiness. Every Friday, I used to take them for a drive along the seaside road. We would travel together, watching the horizon, finding simple joy and a sense of peace in the blue of the water and the vastness of the sky, a feeling that reminded us of the life we had always dreamed of.

We never knew that these ordinary moments would one day become some of our most precious memories, or that we would need to return to them to find strength when life became overwhelming.

We have lost so much, but we have not lost our ability to hope, nor our faith that what comes from God carries mercy within it, even when it takes us time to understand it.

O God, compensate us for everything we have lost. Mend our hearts with a tenderness worthy of Your mercy, and grant my children and me days of safety, when we can return to the sea without fear, laugh from the depths of our hearts, and finally feel that life is offering us some of the tenderness we have been deprived of.

A morning of hope to every heart exhausted by loss, yet still believing that what lies ahead may be more beautiful.

I do not believe modern history has witnessed a human tragedy on this scale, or massacres this brutal, as those Gaza has endured.

What astonishes me is not the cruelty that continues to devastate the land and its people, but the helplessness that has gripped the world, and the silence that has lasted so long that suffering has become an everyday spectacle, and the blood of innocent people has become little more than passing figures in the news.

What kind of world watches children being killed, homes being reduced to rubble, and mothers being torn from the arms of their children, only to stand by as though this tragedy has nothing to do with them?!

The tragedy lies not only in the sheer scale of destruction, but also in the fact that all of this is happening before the eyes of the world, while consciences seem unable to turn what they witness into a stance, or what they feel into action.

Gaza will remain an open wound in the conscience of humanity, and one question will continue to haunt this world: How much more blood must be shed, and how many more lives must be lost, before the human conscience awakens—before it is too late?

It is painful enough to make us ask: Where has this war brought us?

Just moments ago, right before our eyes, we witnessed a scene that sent shivers down our spines.

A group of young women were walking nearby when, suddenly, one of them abandoned her little daughter, who appeared to be around a year and a half old. The child appeared to have special needs.

I picked up the little girl and ran after her mother for nearly 300 meters, but her mother did not turn back. She walked away, then told the girl who was with her, “I don’t want her.”

The other girl was the one who took the child from me. She told me that the mother could no longer carry her, and that was why she had left her behind.

I stood there helplessly, unable to comprehend what I had just witnessed, or how a human being can be pushed to such a level of exhaustion and despair.

This happened this afternoon, near the Palestinian Bar Association in Tal al-Hawa, Gaza.

Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal wakeel.

Everyone, if we are no longer able to bear this reality, then let us at least spare children the consequences of our helplessness. Let us think carefully before bringing children into a life we are no longer able to protect them in.

War does not only kill people. Sometimes, it slowly empties a person from within, until they can no longer carry the heaviest thing a mother’s heart could ever carry: her child.

I watched them running across the field, chasing a small ball as if they were chasing life itself. Their joyful voices filled the air, and their remaining limbs painted scenes of determination across the grass. Some of their kicks looked as though they had come from the feet of the greatest players in the world.

I looked closely at their faces. Some had lost a leg in this war, while others carried the scars of previous wars. Yet they all refused to lose something far more precious than their limbs: their will.

They did not come onto the field to mourn what they had lost, but to declare that they are still here — dreaming, resisting, and creating joy in the heart of pain.

In a city exhausted by war and buried beneath rubble, these players with amputated limbs ran after the ball as if they were running over the ruins of despair itself. Every pass was a message of life, and every goal was another victory over war.

The war has taken parts of their bodies, but it has failed to take the passion and hope from their souls.

What more are we expected to face in Gaza?

For three years, we have been trapped in a night that refuses to end. We sleep with fear, we wake with fear, and in between, we count those who are still here, mourn those who are gone, and try to convince our hearts that tomorrow might be a little less cruel.

Three years have passed over our souls like an entire lifetime.

Homes have been reduced to rubble. Faces have disappeared before we could say our final goodbyes. We have carried what remained of our lives into tents, facing the summer heat and winter cold, while prices keep rising and the weight of need grows heavier for those who have nothing left but patience.

Even our children no longer have a childhood like the rest of the world.

They learn the sounds of bombardment before their school lessons. They learn fear before they learn what safety means. And we try to protect whatever light remains in their eyes, while an exhaustion grows inside us that we no longer know how to put into words.

And every morning, we ask ourselves:

What do we have left?

A home that became a memory.
Safety that became a wish.
Loved ones who left behind an emptiness nothing can fill.
And an uncertain future, standing before us with hands worn down by waiting.

How can you ask a human being to carry all of this, and then simply tell them: “Be strong”?

How can a heart that has witnessed so much death ever return to what it was?
And how can a mother who spends every night fearing for her children wake up in the morning as though nothing happened?

We are not numbers in the news, nor passing images on your screens.

We are human beings who once had lives: homes and dreams, books and memories, little plans for tomorrow… Then war came and took whatever it could, leaving us with the painful task of trying to continue with whatever remains.

Three years…

Isn’t that enough, world?

How long must suffering speak before it is finally heard?
How many dreams must be buried before someone says: Enough?

We are not asking for the stolen years to be returned. Some of those taken by war could not be brought back even if all the years in the world were given to us.

We only want a life in which survival is not a daily miracle.

A morning when we are not afraid of another terrible piece of news.
A night when we can sleep without holding our children close, afraid that we may not wake up.
A roof over our heads, instead of a tent being the last shelter we have left.

We want an ordinary life…

That simple thing so many people live every day without thinking about its value has become, for us, a distant dream.

Can you imagine a person being killed simply because they stood in line for a cup of water?

This is not a scene from a movie, nor a story from some distant past.
This is what is happening in Gaza today.

The Mekorot water line supplying Gaza was cut off, reportedly because sewage had reached the line, forcing people to rely even more heavily on groundwater—salty and contaminated water that is often unfit for human use.

And so, water, which should be one of the most basic human rights, has become a daily battle for survival.

Long lines, overcrowding, pushing, disputes and arguments…
And every person standing in those lines carries enough fear, hunger, loss, and exhaustion in their heart to break anyone.

But today, it reached an even more horrifying point:

A person was killed by his neighbor while drinking water was being distributed.

Think about this painful contradiction:
In a place where water is supposed to save people’s lives, people are now losing their lives because of it.

We do not justify violence, nor do we accept desperation turning into violence between people. But can anyone truly imagine the pressure of a person who fights every day for food, medicine, and water, then stands in a long line not knowing whether they will return to their children with water—or empty-handed?

World, this is not merely a water crisis.
This is a human being left alone to fight for survival.

Gaza does not need more chaos.
It needs water, and it needs a fair, binding system that ensures everyone can access it while protecting people’s dignity and lives.

When a cup of water becomes a wish, and a water queue becomes a place where a person may lose their life, the question is no longer: What is Gaza lacking?

The question is:

Separation has become something we carry with us, as if the war came not only to kill us, but to tear away everything we love, one thing after another. We, people of Gaza, know the value of every blessing. And who could understand that value better than us, when some of the best young men among us have been killed simply trying to obtain a #PieceOfBread and a handful of flour?

But we are also human beings. We are proud people, and we have spent our entire lives having enough to eat. Receiving aid during war and siege does not mean that we should be given things that no one would accept for themselves.

Especially when the donor pays $700 for this aid package, while its actual value in Gaza does not exceed $30!!

Here is a photo showing the contents of the #FoodParcel, which represents more than 80% of the aid entering Gaza.

As for its contents:

》5 kg of crushed lentils, worth about 1 shekel per kg on the local market.

》5 kg of rice that is not fit for consumption and has no market value.

》4 liters of cooking oil, worth 36 shekels — a genuine necessity.

》4 cans of poor-quality beans with no market value.

》4 cans of good-quality chickpeas — a genuine necessity.

》1 can of tomatoes — good quality.

》½ kg of salt — acceptable.

Note: The quantities listed above are for one box, and the aid consisted of two boxes.

》One bag of flour — a genuine necessity.

What is particularly striking is that items such as beans, rice, and lentils have become a burden on families because of their poor quality or because they make up such a large proportion of the parcel. Together, they account for around 70% of its contents.

The humanitarian request of a Gazan family is simply:

● Change the contents of the parcel to include more diverse and useful items, such as olive oil, canned tuna, canned meat, sugar, milk, bulgur, canned fava beans, and tea.

● Improve the quality of the items so that they are actually fit for consumption.

○ We have not dared to ask for changes that might be considered a luxury, such as adding canned fruit, chocolate, or similar items.

There was a wedding…

There were supposed to be ululations, laughter, photographs, and beautiful memories.

But in Gaza, even joy has become fragile in the face of death.

A single bullet was enough to turn what should have been a joyful memory for the family into a funeral, into a mother waiting for her son who will never return, and into a home receiving condolences instead of congratulations.

Anwar was not going to war.
He was going to a wedding.

And yet, he ended up in intensive care, and then he left this life.

What kind of city is this, where people cannot celebrate without fearing that their joy might turn into a funeral?

For a wound has the right to be told,

Many of you here have come to know me as someone who has lived through this devastation, and who is still living under bombardment and displacement, trying every day to hold on to whatever remains of life.

I am Nada, both a mother and a father to my children.

My children’s father lost one of his eyes, while the other was severely damaged after he was injured while carrying out humanitarian work with the Ministry of Health. Because of this, I have become responsible for caring for my family and providing for their needs.

I recently went through a severe health crisis that required special care. I am still trying to regain my strength, get back on my feet, and return to my work in university teaching, which I did for two years.

But the road is not easy.

Today, I am facing a major challenge in providing my medical necessities and food, as well as my children’s needs, especially with the beginning of the school year approaching and all the essential supplies it requires.

Between yesterday’s massacre and today’s massacre, Gaza seems trapped in a funeral that never ends; one catastrophe follows another, blood is spilled over blood that has not yet dried, and new names are torn from life to be added to the lists of the missing.

There is no time for grief to run its course, nor for tears to dry. Mothers open their eyes to a new loss before they have finished mourning an old one, and children have been forced to grow up before their time; they have given up their place in the water line to perform ablution with the blood of their fathers before the prayer of farewell.

As though the doors of mercy have been closed upon Gaza, leaving it alone beneath the weight of death; counting its dead, bidding farewell to its loved ones, and burying what remains of its days. When Nothing Remains of the Soul but the Strength to Endure

I have never known a feeling like this in my life.

To wake up every morning and discover that something else inside you has broken. To look at yourself and wonder how you are still standing, even though you feel that every part of your soul has been shattered.

For so long, I have been trying to gather what remains of me.

I reach into the rubble of my life, trying to find something that resembles strength, something that tells me: Get up. You still have to keep going.

But I am tired.

Tired of having to be strong all the time. Tired of facing everything as though I have an entire army standing behind me, when the truth is that sometimes I feel completely alone, facing an entire army of hardships by myself.

I am fighting to stand on my feet again, to find my way back to life, while at the same time carrying my responsibilities toward myself and trying not to fall apart in front of my children.

I have to be a strong mother for them, even on the days when all I wish for is to find someone who would tell me: It’s okay. You can rest for a while. I’ll carry this burden for you.

And in the middle of all this, one question keeps haunting me:

Why did they leave us here alone?

Why do we have to live in this tiny place, surrounded by all this pain, while things are taken away from us one by one?

They did not only take our homes.

They took our safety, our work, our memories, our dreams, and the days we were supposed to live as ordinary human beings.

They violated our bodies, exhausted our souls, trampled on our memories, and then left us trying to save whatever remains of ourselves.

Even our dignity has become something we struggle to protect with every ounce of strength we have left.

And I am writing this now with a deep sense of shame.

But before you read, please… don’t read these words with your eyes alone. Read them with your heart, and try to feel the human being hidden behind every line.

For many long months, I have been living in a body exhausted by bleeding.

Bleeding that keeps returning, constant disturbances that give me no chance to catch my breath, and a severe drop in my blood levels that has turned every passing day into a new battle between my body and life.

I have undergone so many treatments and received blood transfusions over long periods. Every time I thought I was beginning to regain a little of my strength, my body would remind me that it was still exhausted.

Sometimes, my blood levels would drop so severely that they affected the way my heart was functioning. More than once, I found myself standing in that terrifying space between life and death… a place where you do not know whether you will open your eyes the next morning.

And in those moments, all I could see were the faces of those I had lost.

I would see them in front of me with a strange clarity, as though the distance between us had disappeared.

I called out to them in silence. I spoke to them. I begged them to take me with them.

I would say to myself: Take me away from this world… it has become harsher than my heart can bear.

And then, somehow, in a way I still cannot understand, I would return.

I would return to life.

Not because I was well, and not because the pain had ended, but because some small part of me was still fighting.

I would open my eyes and tell myself: Maybe tomorrow will be easier.

But tomorrow would come carrying a new kind of pain.

And now, the heat has come too.

We do not live in homes that protect us from the sun. We live in places that feel like open ovens. The heat enters our bodies without mercy, even the air feels heavy, and my exhausted body no longer knows how to keep fighting.

Constant physical disturbances, poor circulation, and exhaustion often make me feel that death is no longer as far away as it once was.

Sometimes I feel as though it is sitting beside me, simply waiting for the last fragment of my ability to endure to disappear.

Even at dawn today…

I faced another moment when I felt that my body could no longer carry me.

I was afraid.

But I fought back.

I do not know where this strength comes from, or why I still cling to life with such determination, even though life itself has left me with so little to hold on to.

Maybe it is because I still want to live.

I want to see an ordinary day, a day in which fear is not part of every detail.

I want to wake up without wondering what my body will do to me today.

I want to breathe without pain, sleep without fear, and live without feeling that death is waiting around every corner.

And every time I place my hand on my chest and feel the weakness in my body, the same question returns.

A small question in words, but heavier than everything I carry:

What did we do to deserve this?

What did we do to deserve having survival become a daily battle?

What did we do to deserve fighting illness, heat, hunger, and fear while the world continues as though nothing is happening?

What did we do to deserve having the dream of a normal life become so impossibly distant?

I am not asking for a perfect life.

I am not asking for anything extraordinary.

I just want another chance…

A chance to live.

I just want to live.

Dreams are another world, but sometimes they are more truthful than reality. A world that opens its doors to us when we can no longer face what is happening while we are awake, and gives us, even if only for a few moments, what we have been deprived of for so long.

Last night, I fell asleep at the lowest point a human being can reach. For three years, I have appeared strong, swallowing my fear, hiding my sorrow, and carrying on my heart enough burdens to break a person a thousand times over.

For three years, I kept telling myself: Hold on.

But this time, I no longer knew how.

I feel as though the burden has become too heavy for my shoulders to bear, and the heart that endured everything has begun to crack in silence. Every day, another piece of it breaks, until it has become so fragile that one more blow might be enough to shatter it completely.

I drifted into sleep like a drowning person exhausted by the sea.

Even in my sleep, I felt myself drowning. I reached out my hand, but found nothing to hold on to. I searched for a single breath that could save me from the weight pressing down on my chest.

Then I saw them.

My brothers and my professor were standing in the distance, in a beautiful, peaceful place—a place unlike this world I know… a place where sorrow seemed unable to reach.

I was wearing a white dress, my hair falling freely over my shoulders.

The moment I saw them, I ran toward them.

I stumbled.

I fell.

I got back up.

Then I stumbled again.

As though even my feet were no longer strong enough to carry me.

And when I felt that I could not get up again, my professor reached out his hand.

He held me, looked deeply into my eyes, and quietly said:

“You will be okay soon.”

I broke down.

I cried as I had never cried before.

I cried as though I had been waiting for those words for three years, as though everything I had buried inside me had finally found a place to escape.

My eldest brother came closer and pulled me into his arms.

I collapsed against his chest like a child who had lost her way, crying like someone who had lost everything and could no longer find a single reason in life to keep enduring.

He held me tightly, stroked my head, and said:

“You will be okay.”

I clung to him and begged them not to leave me.

I told them I did not want to go back.

I did not want to return to that world that had exhausted me until it took a part of me away, nor to all that pain I had spent years trying to prove I was stronger than.

Then my younger brother took my hand.

He looked at me as though he could see everything I had been hiding, even from myself.

He said:

“Where did your strength go? Where did your courage go? You were always gentle on the outside, but strong on the inside… What have they done to you?”

Then he looked at my chest.

My heart was visible beneath my clothes.

A small, fragile heart, bleeding terribly.

He could see everything.

Every wound I had hidden.

Every fear I had swallowed.

Every time I said, “I’m fine,” while silently falling apart inside.

My professor came closer, placed his hands on my head, and said:

“Be still… You will be okay soon. You will leave all this pain behind.”

Then he looked at me and said:

“You were the strongest… Hold on.”

They all smiled.

All three of them.

They smiled at me as though they knew something I did not.

As though they had come only to reassure my broken heart that this was not the end.

Then they promised me they would not leave me.

I suddenly woke up.

My tears were still on my face, and my heart was still aching.

For a few moments, I stared into the emptiness, trying to understand:

Was that really a dream?

Or, after my heart could no longer bear reality, did it create another world for me—a world where I could meet the people I miss and hear the words no one knows how desperately I need?

Perhaps dreams are not always an escape from reality.

Perhaps, sometimes, they are a small mercy the mind gives us when the heart can no longer continue.

A hand reaching out to us from somewhere unknown.

A voice coming from afar to tell us:

Hold on…

You are not alone.

And no matter how long this pain lasts, it will not be stronger than you forever.

Then I closed my eyes again, almost afraid to wake completely…

Because, for the first time in so long, that place was the only place where I felt that I was still loved, that my existence still mattered, and that I was still worthy of hearing someone say:

“You will be okay.”

I miss those whom death took from me.

The war has taken away everyone who once stood beside me, everyone who was my strength and my refuge.

And perhaps that is why, in my dreams, I keep searching for them.

Because in a world that has taken so much from me, my heart still remembers what it felt like to have someone beside me saying:

A new photograph surfaced tonight of the elderly Palestinian men, Nadi and Ali Maarouf. It was taken just hours before they were reportedly executed by Israeli occupation forces in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, in November 2024.

Two elderly men, who should have been spending their final years in greater peace, instead found themselves caught in yet another scene of killing that has left Gaza weighed down by grief.

According to accounts circulating at the time, they were used as human shields before being executed in cold blood.

One old photograph, yet it carries everything: fear, helplessness, waiting, and the face of Gaza, which no longer knows how to survive such an overwhelming amount of pain.

It was nearly 2:00 a.m., and I was sitting inside my tent at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, holding my phone as if it were the only thing capable of keeping my fear at bay.

I couldn’t sleep.

Outside, the drones hovered low above our heads, as though searching for their next victim. Night was no longer a time for rest. It had become the hour when we all silently waited for the same question:

Whose turn will it be tonight?

I was alone with my children.

Just a few steps from our tent stood a mosque sheltering dozens of displaced families. Every time I looked at it, the same question crossed my mind—one I never dared say aloud:

If the mosque is bombed… will we survive?

It wasn’t pessimism. It was a fear the war had taught us. In those days, mosques were being bombed, tents were being targeted, and nowhere could honestly be called safe.

At that moment, I loved scattering my papers and pencils around me, allowing that beautiful chaos to surround me, as if through it I was releasing all the negative energy that weighed on my heart and transforming it into colors and stories.

My life was not easy, despite my achievements and my constant pursuit of success. I faced many obstacles and carried within me sorrows that many never saw, but I always searched for light in the darkness, turning pain into strength and brokenness into a new beginning.

I believed that circumstances should never be stronger than our dreams. That is why I never allowed any obstacle to stop me or affect my journey forward. My goal was always to remain strong for myself and for my children… to let them see in me an example of how a person can rise again, no matter how difficult life becomes.

In the first week of the war, Fatima Nofal was a mother to five little dreams. She had no idea that a single day would turn her life into a story too heavy for any heart to bear.

That day, an Israeli airstrike shattered her family. Amin, Hamza, and her infant son, Ahmad, were killed.

The hardest part was not only losing them—it was the way she had to say goodbye. Rescuers brought her tiny, unrecognizable remains, and no one could tell whether they belonged to Hamza or Amin. As for Ahmad, the youngest of them all, his tiny body was pulled from beneath the rubble.

Fatima survived, but she did not emerge the same woman. She escaped with her two daughters—Baraa, who was wounded in the attack, and Lina—while a part of her heart remained buried beneath the ruins alongside her children.

Months passed, each one unbearably heavy, until God blessed her with another son. She named him Zaid.

To Fatima, Zaid was never just another child. He was life knocking once again on a door that grief had long since closed. She often looked at him as though God Himself was gently comforting her exhausted heart, saying, “He is the gift that restored a piece of my soul.”

And he truly was.

In another airstrike, Zaid was killed. Fatima and her daughter Lina were wounded, and once again she found herself lying in a hospital bed, carrying the same wound she had believed was finally beginning to heal.

As she prepared to say goodbye to her fourth child, the doctor looked at her blood test results, then quietly said:

“You’re pregnant.”

For a moment, time stood still.

She could not understand how one heart could possibly carry so much at once—mourning the child who had just slipped away while, in the very same moment, receiving the news of another life growing inside her.

She wept.

Not only because she had lost Zaid, but because she realized that this war had forced the mothers of Gaza to live suspended between funerals and births, between graves and delivery rooms, between one child leaving the world and another arriving—bringing with them both hope… and fear.

This is not only Fatima’s story.

There are moments in life that are not measured by the weight they place on the body, but by the weight they leave on the soul… moments when a person wishes they had never been created to endure them.

One of the hardest moments I have ever lived through was that day when I found myself carrying a piece of news no human heart could bear… news that I had to place inside the heart of a mother.

At that time, I was living through loss in every possible form. I was trying to learn how to breathe again after the loss of my brothers and my teacher, who were killed, and how to hide my pain so I could appear strong in front of everyone.

I swallowed my tears in silence, hid my breaking behind words of patience, and carried inside me a graveyard of memories that no one could see.

Until that morning came…

I woke up to the ringing of my phone. The father of my children was on the other end. His voice was not normal; it carried something that frightened me before I even knew what it was.

He said:

“Nada… wake up and pray Fajr, then call me back… it’s urgent.”

My heart froze.

The first thing that came to my mind was my mother and father, whom I had been separated from for nine months at that time.

I asked him with a trembling voice:

“Did something happen to my family?”

He said:

“No.”

His voice sounded truthful, but my heart felt that a disaster was hiding behind his words.

I begged him:

“Please… tell me, what happened?”

But he repeated:

“Pray and call me.”

How can a person pray while their heart is suspended between fear and the unknown?

I stood up, but my body did not feel like it belonged to me. I felt my heartbeat like the sound of explosions, and trembling spread through my legs, as if my soul was preparing to hear something that would change it forever.

I kept begging him until he finally said the words that shattered what was left inside me:

“Our neighbor in the tent across from us… all of her sons were killed. You have to tell her… there is no one else to carry this news to her.”

I collapsed to the ground.

I did not know what to say, or how a person could carry the death of an entire family and take it to a mother waiting for her sons to return.

I heard his voice through the phone:

“Nada… Nada… are you okay?”

I prayed Fajr, but I did not feel like I was praying… I was crying and asking God to give me a strength that my body did not have, and patience greater than my heart could hold.

Then I went outside.

My neighbor was sitting at the entrance of her tent, as she always did, waiting for her sons the way every mother waits for a voice that reassures her.

I approached her, and she smiled and said:

“My sons… none of them are answering my calls.”

At that moment, I felt as if a knife had pierced my chest.

She had been calling them all day, searching for any voice, any word, any sign that they were still alive.

I moved closer to her.

She looked at me and asked:

“What happened?”

I could not hide anything… my face revealed the tragedy before my words could.

I bent down and kissed her head.

She looked up at me, held my hand tightly, as if she was reading the truth from my eyes, and said:

“Which one of my sons was killed?”

My voice became trapped.

I swallowed my grief and felt, for a moment, that I had lost the ability to move.

I reminded myself: I have to be strong… this moment is not about me, it is about her.

But she repeated the question, tears filling her eyes:

“Which one? Tell me… which one?”

The word came out from the ruins of my heart:

“All of them…”

At that moment, a scream came out that I had never heard in my life.

A mother’s scream who had not only lost her sons… but had lost her entire world in a single moment.

The people of the camp gathered around us, but I could no longer see anyone.

Everything around me disappeared.

All that remained was the scream of that mother, and with it came the faces of everyone I had lost… my brothers, my teacher, my friend, and all the souls who left behind stories that no one remained to tell.

During the first two days, as airstrikes began swallowing the city, I went to a supermarket to buy a few essentials. I didn’t buy much. I chose light foods that could give my children a little energy, believing we were preparing for a few difficult days—not a lifetime of displacement and loss.

When I returned home and had barely put the bags down, a warning came that the building next to ours would be bombed.

Today, I look around me and see nothing but helplessness.

I cannot afford my personal expenses. I cannot complete my medical treatment. I cannot even repay a debt that weighs heavily on my heart before it weighs on my shoulders.

Then my memories carry me back to years filled with hope, determination, and dreams.

I was not yet seventeen when I got married. Despite that, I completed both high school and university while being a wife and a mother. Every semester, I earned honors and maintained an outstanding academic record.

I was raised in a financially comfortable family, and so was my children’s father’s family. Yet I never wanted my success to come from privilege. I wanted it to be the result of my own hard work. I studied until dawn, then started each new day fulfilling my responsibilities as a mother with all the strength I had.

I will never forget the day I gave birth to my twins. It was a cesarean section, and my condition was critical. Yet only five days later, I sat for one of my university exams. Every movement was painful, and every minute in that classroom felt unbearable, but I was determined not to lose my place at the top of my class. I believed that education is a mission, and that a person’s true worth lies in what they contribute to society, not in the wealth they inherit.

My hard work led me to become a university lecturer for two years before joining one of the country’s most important government ministries. Step by step, I built my life. I raised my children, built my home, and created my future with my own hands. Even then, I returned to university once again to specialize in programming alongside Information Technology and Design, because I have always believed that learning never ends.

Then the war came.

And within moments, everything I had built was taken away.

I lost my home, my car, my savings, my job, and everything I had spent years working to achieve.

Even then, I refused to give up.

I successfully applied to return to university teaching remotely. I believed it would be my chance to rebuild my life and stand on my feet again, no matter how difficult the road would be.

I am confined to a hospital room.

I cannot afford my medical treatment. I cannot cover my personal expenses. I cannot even pay for the training program that I must complete before I can begin my new job.

I never imagined that after all those years of perseverance, hard work, and dedication, I would reach a point where I could no longer provide even my most basic needs.

What hurts me most is not only the illness, nor only the war. It is the heartbreaking reality that after spending my life building a future with dignity, I now find myself powerless, simply waiting for one chance to stand again.

Among the highest achievers was Yahya Adham Nasman, who earned an outstanding score of 96.6%. But Yahya was not there to witness the reward for his hard work. However, before I can begin this position, I must complete a relatively long training period, which is unfortunately unpaid. This places me under immense financial pressure, especially given my ongoing humanitarian and medical circumstances.
