Its a separate cell and GPS built into the car. X5 would have definitely had it. Its supposed to be on a BMW emergency network (reachable in most places, but I highly doubt it would have worked there). Once connected the operator has access to sensors, door locks, diagnostics etc. I've even heard that they were able to thwart a car jacking once by stopping the vehicle and locking the thieves inside the BMW until police arrived.

I gotta wonder if he even tried to hit the BMW Emergency SOS ...

I have a 2020 X5 xDrive40i (same configuration with the larger rear wheels but with a turbocharged V6). There isn’t a spare, they come with run flats. At least he had all wheel drive (xDrive) but I don’t think the plug in hybrid model helped him any and the run flats likely did him in.
