Every US President should be reminded on a daily basis that they are merely the temporary head servant in one of 3 government branches.

If at any point the term "servant" is not accurate this should be rectified immediately. The failure of the 2 other branches to fully assert ownership and control of their own spheres without being subservient to the current person holding the title President (person, not role) has lead to the increasing falsity of the term "servant".

Not sure if I'm late to that party on this one or not. Guest to host escape in Linux KVM.

> Zapscape (CVE-2026-64561)
> Zapscape is a use-after-free vulnerability in the shadow MMU emulation of KVM/x86, specifically in the recursive zap path that runs when shadow pages are reclaimed. It can trigger the bug with guest-side actions alone to corrupt the host kernel's shadow page, and it can threaten the guest-host isolation of KVM/x86 hosts that accept untrusted guests and expose nested virtualization, particularly multi-tenant x86 public clouds.

https://github.com/V4bel/Zapscape

Given the Ubuntu issues this might be good for folks with multiple/many Ubuntu hosts to know that they can run an apt package cache on prem that all of their hosts can use. This can also significantly reduce bandwidth if you have many of hosts and/or if you are building Ubuntu based containers often that need to pull updated packages.

It has been a few years since I built one but I don't recall it being very difficult. It just required your hosts being configured to use it.

This should for for Debian as well. I suspect there is similar tech for other package managers.

On the contain image topic, I think a couple of the registries support "pull through" image downloads which can help in during outages as well as reduce network bandwidth.

Reference:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Apt-Cacher%20NG

#Ubuntu

As a Greybeard with 25+ years in IT and InfoSec I'd give the following advice to early-career InfoSec folks in a defender role:

Make it a priority to understand, like REALLY understand, the core technologies being used in the environments you are defending. If your environment is primarily Windows then, however distasteful you find it, learn it inside and out. Install it, run it, configure networking, break all of it, and learn how to fix it. The same goes for any OS and for cloud environments, hardware, networking, etc. You can't learn it all instantly but pick a domain with the most impact and start working on it.

There are many situations where this will help you.

1/6

#InfoSec #Security

The discussions about a "AI bubble" makes me think of the 2008 financial crisis and companies getting bailouts due to being "Too big to fail" due to the impact on the economy.

I have (probably very uninformed) options about that designation but that isn't the point of this post.

(the following is certainly VERY uninformed)

Assuming the complete collapse of the AI bubble, I wonder which long established companies would die or fragment and how that would change things. I'm not talking about newish companies like OpenAI and I would actively cheer the failure of xAI. I'm curious if it would cause companies like Microsoft and NVIDIA to fail. If so, how quickly would the US Gov move to keep Azure from going perma-dark? Who would buy the OS chunk of the business to take over Windows? Could you imagine all Windows hosts and Microsoft software becoming completely unsupported with no security patches?

I could imagine that under certain circumstances NVIDIA valuation and revenue dramatically collapses and it could no longer fund hardware investments for OpenAI, Microsoft, Oracle, and others. These orgs would be left with "services" and capital investments that don't generate revenue in their current state and can't effectively source custom AI accelerators and GPUs at scale to improve capabilities. I could also imagine that the impact to the stock market would be significant and that retirement funds with heavy tech investments would take a serious hit. That could make the term "AI" toxic to the average person and further drive down demand.

Bah, who am I kidding. This timeline is pretty terrible so AI will continue to be the Pumpkin Spice of technology.

Hey folks, if you run Redis you should be aware of a CVSS 10 vuln, CVE-2025-49844, which is a lua related RCE. Redis have release a patch for this and 3 other CVEs. According to Wiz, this vuln has existed for 13 years. That means forks such as Valkey may also be impacted. Valkey has also released updates to address the same CVEs.

Redis: https://www.runzero.com/blog/redis/

Valkey: https://www.runzero.com/blog/valkey/

#Security #Redis #Valkey #CVE-2025-49844 #CVE202549844

Random note for folks running macOS devices for work. macOS 26 was just released and it is not safe to assume that your security tooling will work correctly. It's worth verifying this before trying to upgrade. In the past I've seen at least 2 different common security agents that took multiple weeks to become fully compatible with a major macOS release.

#Security #macOS #Apple

Hey folks, there are quite a few companies that are selling "smart glasses" that integrate with Meta, Google, and the like. If they aren't already, in the future some of these will feed imagery/audio to these services. If your organization doesn't have a policy on this you should probably get on that. Most of you wouldn't allow continuous video streaming of your internal meetings or non-public spaces to non-affiliated 3rd parties, so why allow these?. Would you allow the PII your company is entrusted with to be shared with Facebook? What about internal source code? Imagine the impacts on PCI and HIPAA.

If you're buying these in a prescription form I'd recommend always carrying non-smart versions because there will absolutely be places that will refuse to let you use them.

#Security #Privacy #DIAFMeta #Meta

IMO, it should be legal, in all jurisdictions internationally, to rm -rf / brick any internet connected host so long as the vulnerability used to do so has been publicly disclosed for > 3 years. This includes default credentials and unauthenticated endpoints.

The entity connecting the host or service to the Internet would assume all risk related to this outcome.

This would be the price for putting the rest of the Internet at risk and would be a better outcome that giving malicious actors footholds, pivots, reflectors, and persistent access to data.

I'm not saying it would be practical, just legal.

#Security #QuitShittingUpTheInternet

There is quite a bit of buzz related to CVE-2025-24054 which covers attackers causing victims to leak NTLM hashes if they open certain files or view certain directories. In short, this forces victims running Windows to make a connection to an attacker controlled SMB share.

*Note: A patch was provided by Microsoft on March 11.*

If you prevent SMB traffic from leaving your networks then you don't have to worry about this unless the attacker has already setup shop in your network. Like, patch anyway but, IMO, it would be a better use of your time to ensure that outbound SMB is blocked first. Don't forget to account for mobile devices that are off-network.

Reference:
Check Point - CVE-2025-24054, NTLM Exploit in the Wild
https://research.checkpoint.com/2025/cve-2025-24054-ntlm-exploit-in-the-wild/

#Security #Windows

Companies often run Active Directory controllers on VMware so compromise of the host can result in AD compromise as well. The VMware management infrastructure, such as vSphere, vCloud Director, etc also runs in VMware so you can compromise those as well. This applies to any sensitive workloads that you can run in a virtual machine.

Networking for the guests is handled by the ESXi host. If you have full control of the host you can sniff and inject traffic, potentially impact local routing, etc.

If there is any uncertainty about whether a system is affected, it should be presumed vulnerable, and immediate action should be taken.

> Does this impact VMware vSphere 6.5 or 6.7?

> Yes. A patch has been released for ESX 6.7 and is available via the Support Portal to all customers. ESX 6.5 customers should use the extended support process for access to ESX 6.5 patches.

> Products that are past their End of General Support dates are not evaluated as part of security advisories, and are not listed in the official VMSA. Broadcom strongly encourages all customers using vSphere 6.5 and 6.7 to update to vSphere 8.

https://github.com/vmware/vcf-security-and-compliance-guidelines/tree/main/security-advisories/vmsa-2025-0004

While I expect the amount of doomscrolling related media consumption has gone up recently, I wouldn't be surprised if there are types/topics of media that have seen a drop.

I can't count the number of times I've seen a link to an article that I would have been excited about in the past, opened the link in a new tab, switch tabs, and just closed it because I didn't have the spoons to read the first sentence. I don't even have the mental energy seek distraction. I'd be surprised if I was alone in this.

Hey folks, if you post bare links with no commentary or description of what you are linking to then you are probably not having the impact you think you are. Many folks, such as myself, will not open these. The exception would be those sites that show expanded cards in Mastodon.

Also, links to youtu.be don't expand and don't display a card so we have no idea what you are linking. I ain't opening that either. Links to youtube.com do provide cards and context.

For Security folks, talking about CVE numbers, particularly those that aren't on fire right now, without any context about the product or vuln makes your reader do work just to understand if they should care about what you are saying. If the reader is on a mobile device this can be frustrating.

For example:

> FYI, CVE-2021-20123 doesn't require auth and can provide access to creds

WTF am I supposed to do with that? Why are we talking about a 3 year old vuln? Should I care? Great, now I have homework..

> FYI, CVE-2021-20123 (an LFI in Draytek VigorConnect) doesn't require auth and can provide access to creds

I immediately know if I should care or not.

Obvs, you do you but know that you can have a greater impact by providing context.

#Security

Muscle memory is such a powerful thing when not trained away. Recently my wife and I took a trip that involved quite a bit of swimming. As a kid and teenager I enjoyed swimming but unfortunately I haven't done much of it in the last 30 years.

So, muscle memory.. On the recent trip, every time I surfaced from swimming underwater I would use my hands to slick back my hair to keep it, and water, out of my face. This is a very distinctive motion that actually starts just before I surface. Every time, without fail.

Reader, I haven't had hair, much less enough to need slicking back, in over 20 years. It made me laugh nearly every time I surfaced. It has been so long since I spent any time underwater that I had forgotten that I even did it. I chalk that up to rarely swimming now and being blind AF w/o glasses so I wouldn't swim underwater much when I did. It's probably been 10+ years since I did it for any significant time.

Anyway, muscle memory is a hell of a thing and so is being able to laugh at yourself.
