I didn't look too deeply at what the IDF has been doing since Oct 7. War is always hell and I'm sure there are some unnecessary and unacceptable things happening. But it's difficult to get trustworthy information, because the conflict is mired in propaganda and there's no independent journalism in Gaza. For example, Israel will say the only "aid" they block is what would have gone to Hamas, and that they send proper aid to the population via the GHF, while the Palestinian side will say that the GHF is a sham and doesn't help people. It's impossible for me to figure out which side is more truthful.

So, absent of detailed knowledge, I default to "big picture" logic: Twenty years ago, the Gazan population elected an organization whose stated mission is to destroy Israel, and the attack on Oct 7 showed that this wasn't just posturing, rhetoric, metaphorical, etc. but something that actually culminates in physical attacks, mostly on civilians. So, Israel had to dismantle Gaza.

War is atrocious and almost always involves significant numbers of civilian casualties, but is often accepted as a "necessary evil" at least to some extent. Any individual war is judged on a case by case basis, and can be found to be just or unjust to various degrees.

On the other hand, a genocide is by definition purely atrocious and can never be justified in any way. There are international laws about how warfare is allowed to be conducted (there are specific "war crimes" because war *itself* is not seen as a crime) but there are of course no rules about "how a genocide can be conducted" because it can never be allowed.

The more I inform myself about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the less I'm convinced that Israel as an entity, or Israelis as a population, have ever had genocidal intentions, and I think they still don't. The comment about black pilots was about DEI policies.

If there's a policy saying 20% of pilots an airline hires must be black (e.g. self imposed by the company to seem progressive) and they're looking to hire 100 pilots, but for whatever reason only 5 of the top 100 applicants are black (e.g. due to ongoing disadvantages faced by black Americans) then it's a simple mathematical fact that the airline will have to reach for candidates beyond the top 100 most qualified applicants.

There will be a higher mathematical possibility that a much less qualified person will get the job. If there is a dearth of black applicants, the airline may even need to "scrape the bottom of the barrel" to reach their quota.

Anyone who spent more than 2 minutes debating or reading about this topic knows that this is the most basic form of anti-DEI argument, and anyone who bothers to spend more than 2 minutes on Google will easily find out that this was the context of Charlie Kirk's "racist" comment about pilots.

But none of it matters. Because mainstream "left wing" outlets are as anti-intellectual and dishonest as right wing rags.

People who are unable to care for their child for any reason should be able to give them up for adoption or foster care, although I have to point out that the foster care system is deeply broken and abusive in many places, which makes this very complicated in practice.

But in any case, "in an ideal world" she would simply give the child up for adoption if she can't properly love the child due to the trauma of having discovered that fact about the husband. The child could remind her of him all the time so it's an unreasonable expectation.

When I do a quick web search on how to enable parental controls on MS Windows, I get some stupid complicated mess about some "Microsoft Family App" or whatever.

The whole idea is so simple, it's amazing that the tech industry didn't standardize something like this 20-30 years ago already on their own volition, without needing lawmakers to pressure them. This is almost exactly how I thought it should be:

1. Adult owner of computer specifies that user account "Timmy" is for a person born in 2016.

2. The OS offers applications a means of asking whether the current user is age X or older.

3. Websites meant for age X and over must send some signal to specify this, such as with an HTTP response header.

4. The web client application (e.g. Firefox) must react to this signal from websites and perform the age check using the OS mechanism mentioned in step 2.

When Timmy goes to adultsite.com, Firefox receives the header "User-Age-Check: 18" and asks the OS if Timmy is 18 or older. The OS says no, so Firefox stops loading the site and shows an error.

The law basically specifies points 1 and 2, just going into unnecessary detail about "age bracket" stuff. (Realistically, an OS would just offer a generic "age ≥ X" check so it can support any age brackets of any jurisdiction.)

This is a step in the right direction.
