My wife Volunteered me to prep a bunch of old laptops to deliver to Ecuador on our mission trip next week. I'll have to install linux on them because some of these machines are too old for Windows 11.
I'm test driving Zorin and it has been a really good out-of-the-box ready OS.
Not much to set up, seems really easy for people who don't know much about computers.
I'm scared to ask, but does anyone have a better idea other than Zorin? Keep in mind, it has to be as user friendly as Windows or Mac. Basically, no way can I assume the terminal is an option for daily use. And it'll be hard for me to remote troubleshoot from thousands of miles away.

I am currently running IodeOS on a Pixel6a. But I'll want to upgrade soon. ( I really want that mobile desktop mode you can only get on Pixel 8 or higher)
One of my challenges is that my work will need me to carry a stock Android because of their communication channels. But as I move away from field work to desk work, I may be able to abandon that.

Anyone else have this feeling that Internet as we know it is coming closer to an end? Like, all it would take is a bombing of a few data centers and it's all gone. Or the hacking of a few DNS registrars and all our domains start pointing to a different ip addresses?

I have tried Mastodon, Misskey, Sharkey, Streams, Forte, Friendica, GoToSocial, Pleroma, WordPress Activity Plug-in, and many I can't remember 🤣. After testing these for a few years, I have found Hubzilla to be the best solution for me.

Many of those other accounts have been deleted. Some have been left open for redundancy or backups. Please note that this account will remain my main account and I will only check my other accounts once in a while.

If today was my first day trying to get out of Big Tech social media, I think I would start with either Friendica, Hubzilla, or Streams (and in the future Forte, once it is has been around a bit longer). They have the best features for controlling you audience, checking in with a location if you want, and newsfeed organization.
I wouldn't even waste my time with Mastodon or any of the other Fediverse projects. If I was just wanting a Mastodon/Twitter/BlueSky/Threads experience...I would grab a Nostr Idenity and create bridges to the those other services.
That's just my two cents.

In the middle of March, the Santiago Partnership continued our many years partnership with the Indiana University School of Dentistry, led by Dr. Jeffrey Steele, and hosted a team of volunteers to come down to Ecuador. The team was composed of dentists with extensive experience in both U.S. based care and global care, with one of the volunteers, Dr. Tim Carlson, completing his 18th year of visiting Ecuador and working in dental care here. In addition to these leaders and professors, several dentists in fellowships came, one currently completing a fellowship in pediatrics which she was able to apply well for those in need here. Lastly, they brought many dental students who were proficient in certain procedures and techniques and were able to share their skills to care for those in need. The team was able to spend some days learning about the history and culture of our country, before coming to Cayambe for various pop-up clinics. We served people in surrounding remote communities of Pisambilla (about an hour drive along bumpy dirt roads through the mountains!) to Olmedo in the foothills of Cayambe Volcano, and also at the Casa Hogar house for the beneficiaries of our projects and the community. While Cayambe does have many trained dentists, the cost of getting care is often prohibitively expensive for people who are of low income. The team was able to provide free care for those in need, meeting both acute needs like tooth extractions, and preventative care such as fluoride varnishes to protect children’s teeth. In total 270 patients were seen and the team administered 132 fluoride treatments. On the last day at Casa Hogar, we were able to share a meal with all the visitors from the States, all the staff, as well as the children who live at the home. Gifts were exchanged, memories were made, and great food was eaten. Throughout the whole time the prominent sound was that of laughter. We all found that laughter translated quite easily across language barriers. Overall it was an honor to be able to host this highly passionate, and highly skilled team from the United States again. We’re excited to continue this relationship and hopefully host them again next year!

Last week a group of volunteers headed deep into the jungle region, to the community of Puka Pena. Getting there consisted of 8 hours of driving plus an hour and a half canoe journey. Puka Pena has 150-200 people living in this area, their houses tucked within the jungle trees. The majority of the people spend their time working the land.

This community lives far from society, with no internet, no electricity, no easy access to the outside world. For some, it was a 3-hour trek to get to the medical caravan. The caravan consisted of an Ecuadorian dentist and dental hygienist, 3 nurse practitioners and 1 nurse, a clinical psychologist, a massage/physical therapist, one missionary, and women from the Evangelical Covenant Church.

In total about 245 patients were seen by our medical team, administering medicine as needed. Many of the women brought their families to be seen as well. Teeth cleanings, filling cavities, and needed extractions were available as well.  Workshops were held on the cycle of violence and how violence affects women. "Days For Girls" workshops provided education about menstruation and reproduction. Kits with feminine items were given to women and families.

On the last day of the caravan, the team served another community of the Secoya people made up of 50 families. They speak their own language, completely different from Spanish. They are renowned for their knowledge of medicinal plants, with traditional uses for over 1,000 different plants. The Secoya now number around 600 people in Ecuador.

It's funny how I can have a bazillion thoughts throughout the day, my mind just races with good ideas, resolutions to problems, relflections about life and current situations, but when I come to the keyboard or I pick up a pen for my journal, I have nothing. Nothing to say, nothing to record, nothing to write, nothing to type. It all just stays trapped inside my body, but it needs to escpate. The thoughts need a place to go.

The family and I went to my parent's house for the day. It was good hanging out with them today. We helped them pick out a few cars to test drive next week. We had lunch together. I helped them with some tech stuff.

We got home and found our house built in the 1800s has several frozen pipes. Bummer! I didn't think to turn the knobs a bit on the faucets to have them drip, which keeps them from freezing. Oh well. We do have a few faucets working, so I'm trying to stay positive.

✅ I've added more insulation around water pipes in the basement to prevent freezing and breaking.
✅ I've got all the Christmas decorations down and out of the upcoming weather.
✅ I've found the ice melt and pulled out the snow shovels. Went out and bought some extra ice melt.
✅ I've ensured each vehicle has an ice scraper and brush. Each vehicle has a jump start battery pack.
✅ I've picked up a 15pk of Blue Moon and 4pk of City Wide Pale Ale from 4Hands Brewery. Also, verified I have plenty of coffee in the pantry.

I think I'm prepared for the snow and ice that's coming.

I need to find a syncing encrypted journal software for Android and Linux that can be trusted. Needs to have the ability to work offline for those times I may not have good cell signal. I pay for enough stuff as it is, so looking for something free. I'll donate later if I find it's working well. Does anyone have any suggestions?
