Interesting effect printing several batches of miniatures with the same resin+process over time:

They yellow significantly when cured, but then revert to mostly transparent over time. The former is expected, but the latter is surprising to me. In this photo, the noticeably yellow ones were cured today, and the rest span two days to two weeks since curing.

Bonus: Koz Ross (npub1ln0…erns) said he'd heard of an effect where yellowed transparent resin reclarifies when heated, but that he'd never tried reproducing it himself. So I, having some yellowed resin prints and a heat gun within reach, broke off a few supports and tried it myself. Left is control, right was hit with 100C hot air for about a minute.
3D Printing (npub1d4n…dptf) #3dprinting

oh gods

too early to tell if this fixed it for sure, but framework support suggested something for my weird sporadic keyboard issues that so far seems to be working and absolutely should not have worked:

the SSD thermal pad? the one that fell out of the case when I first opened it and I kind of just stuck it on the SSD in what looked like the right spot and thought no more of it?

that's load-bearing.

the SSD thermal pad is load-bearing.

having it misaligned, or just not having it installed at all, allows the mid plate to flex in such a way that it occasionally briefly knocks the keyboard (which connects via pogo pins) off the bus, deactivating all the other inputs too because they only work if they're all installed.

that is a hell of an engineering choice for an otherwise reasonably well built machine

Weird #laser #physics thing I would like explained in "I understand basic physics but not advanced fancy physics" terms:

Fiber lasers seem to be the way to go for cutting copper. There are several youtubers doing it with lasers in the 20-30W range.

But (most? all?) fiber lasers emit wavelengths somewhere in the infrared range. Copper is highly reflective to infrared, enough that it can be used to make *mirrors* for infrared lasers.

Why does this work so well, but if I point my 20W 455nm diode laser* (which should be absorbed a lot better by copper) at a blank PCB, it just heats up a spot until the glue/FR4 behind it vaporize and make a bubble of undamaged copper instead?

edit: Someone elsenet suggested it's because fiber lasers are 20W average but in very short pulses of much higher power, so the heat wouldn't have a chance to dissipate away. That makes sense, but obvious followup question: can you make a UV laser (not necessarily diode based) that pulses in the same way?

* https://lasertree.com/products/laser-tree-k20-20w-optical-power-laser-module if more information is relevant to an answer

If you give someone information, they now have that information. Information can be stored and replicated at will.

Even if they promise not to store it, they still *can* store it, and you'll never know.

Laws protect you about as much as promises do. Even if there's a law saying they can't use that information for a specific purpose, there might not always be, and they might not be following it now while it still exists. If they are, they might be following the letter and not the spirit of that law.

This is inspired by a thing I learned today, in which a thing I thought was explicitly disallowed due to some laws (but was obviously technically possible with the underlying data) can be done as long as you ask customer support nicely and say it's for "compliance" with those same laws. But (1) I will probably get yelled at if I leak more than that, and (2) you should be thinking of this generally, not as a property of specific laws or specific kinds of data.

It's time for my periodic reminder that VPNs do not magically increase security or privacy.

They take your network traffic and deliver it to someone else on your behalf, then deliver the responses back to you. That is all they do. That's what a VPN is.

The only time this helps with privacy is when you don't want your ISP to know where the traffic is going, *but you're okay with the VPN operator knowing*. If your use case does not fit into that very specific description, including the caveat, a VPN will not help you with privacy.

(Inspired by a friend asking me VPN questions this morning, because "everyone was talking about VPNs so I assumed that's a thing we're supposed to be doing now".)
