Okay, another attempt at a full t-shirt, including collar. Last night, disassembled another very large shirt and removed all seams by hand, minimized cutting. Re-traced my favored t-shirt back and front (instead of just one side). Re-traced arms. Gave myself more room. Now to tack it all together again. #sewing

Euro News: ‘Profiteering from pain’: Investments of super-rich fuel climate crisis and capitalise on recovery

"...Emissions of the super-rich linked to millions of deaths

Oxfam says the wealthiest also contribute disproportionately to the emissions driving the crisis. The richest 0.1 per cent – around eight million people – emit more than the poorest 44 per cent of humanity combined, accounting for around 3.5 billion people.

Oxfam estimates that emissions from the richest one per cent have been responsible for around 20 per cent of global warming since 1990. A single year of their emissions will cause an estimated 1.9 million excess heat-related deaths over the following century, according to the report...."

Them: "Tesla Model 3... " (rambling on)

Me: "How about non Tesla models? I really am trying to avoid Tesla, for multiple reasons..."

(some useful information about why Nissan Leaf batteries are not well designed) then

"Oh, Tesla FSD is great, I just had it drive me down <extremely windy/dangerous local road> and I didn't have to put my hands on the wheel!!"

other guy (trying to answer my question): "There's these models "... and (glancing at my bike) "you are probably income qualified to get a free EV..."

Sitting in a darkened house
Quietly, like a mouse
No lights on, just a phone
But I am not alone

The predator creeps I do not know
Where it is, although
I'm sure it is watching me
And can see

Meow! Meow! Usually
But not with a stranger here, now
He will watch carefully
Just in case he needs to flee

Snapshots from power outage land. A single solar panel is insufficient for this task. (The other one charging off the 1.5kw of roof panels, will be done soon). Thrift store (NIB) solar shower, lol, bought on a whim for $5. Since no one has lights will have to take a shower out back in the garden later 🤪 #disasters #PSPS #CAwx

2026-10-16T03:59:01Z

Personal lessons so far from the power outage/wildfire period we are having (again... I fully expect this will be more and more the state of the world, so hope to learn from this to do the next one better)

1. AC/heat issues for the pet rabbits: bought some ice for them overnight, might buy more tomorrow; have some ice bottles stashed in a freezer for them, which I may retrieve in the morning when I can bicycle over there for them. They are heat sensitive... anyway, pets + disasters is a complexity. I have a window A/C that I can run from a generator, if I wanted... but would have to corral all the rabbits into a small area in a small room, which might cause more stress than just supplying nice cool ice bottles.

2. The laptop I'm using: the power cord is squirrely. Maybe a short. I do not want to open it up to fix the connector, but may not have a choice. Or I will be on a different laptop tomorrow, lol. Need TWO power adapters for the emergency/disaster laptop! (or multiple laptops with the same adapters)

3. Powering the FIOS ONT is a pain. Known issue, but the two SLA batteries I had for it went stale. (too old/too much load/no good... Lead Acid is not a great technology for a UPS... need to just put that one on a power station, too, powered off DC).

4. Power station running the router... excellent. No glitch. Currently at 67% battery, has been running since 4 pm without recharge.

5. Need more voltage readouts for all the misc batteries I am using, so I can see what needs to be swapped out easily.

One day outage probably is well covered by my plans. Two days is going to stretch it. If we end up at 3 days, the genny will be out. (it's still in reserve, we're still on battery backups).

Food Safety During Power Outages

(per non-brainworm eaten USDA)

Fridge: "... your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.."

Freezer: "A full freezer will hold a safe temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full and the door remains closed). Food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F (4°C) or below, however, its quality may suffer. "

2026-10-15T04:21:30Z

See you on the other side, folks, if I disappear it's because SoCal Edison has decided to cut off power AND connectivity loss. I'm currently on warning between 10/15/2026 and 9pm PT and 10/16/2026 9pm PT. But some areas here are possibly shut off at 6am. (I'll have power here locally of course -- backups and solar and all that -- but connectivity will be TBD -- not sure how good Frontier's backup is for long term.. I should set up a Winlink->Fediverse posting bot 🤪 ) We'll also be watching someone else's house, have to plug their fridge/freezer in every so often if power goes out... (need to look up the recommended rotation cycle on that again, speaking of which).
