One Day Everyone Will Always Have Been Against This by Omar El Akkad is this year's Fort Collins Reads book. I read it for book group, but I want to reread it because he's coming to talk to us November 8. I was afraid to read this book, but it is mostly not about the atrocities, it is, as the title suggests, about how the rest of the world responds to the atrocities.

I'm reading A Night In The Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. I meant to read it one chapter per day, but I fell behind, raced ahead, fell behind again, and gave up. It's good any way you read it.

Just finished Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman for Classics book group. Talking about books with that group is usually a good time.

My sidewalk strip is xeriscape, but the plants are enjoying the 2.5 inches of rain. It's on a steep slope, which made it a nuisance to mow when it was grass and weeds, but now it means that even with clay soil it has adequate drainage.

This is why I can't grow kale in the back yard anymore.

This is a flowering stalk from overwintering last year's kale. I gave this one to Tilda, but she will help herself to kale in the garden.

She ate my entire asparagus crop the first year I had her. Then she kept chewing on the fronds after they leafed out, looking for another taste of that sweet sweet asparagus, until the plants gave up the ghost.

Lilac (Syringa vulgaris). I have this ancient lilac at the front of the house. I don't know how old it is but it is much bigger than the space the original gardener gave it. The blossoms are lilac-colored and the scent is excellent. Then I put three lilacs between my front yard and the neighbor's. They are much paler, almost white. There are two darker purple lilacs in the back yard that I got as suckers from another neighbor.

Rebuilding the #compost bins. I emptied the oldest in this set of six bins, then put it back together. The cardboard around the edges is just to keep the compost in the bin. The sticks are to keep channels open for air to get inside the compost. (Also, I had to cut down a small self-sown crabapple and I had a lot of sticks.) Then I turned the two bins behind this one into this one. They had both shrunk down a lot, so almost all their contents fit into this.

I think you can sell those for enough money to fund a lot of Little Free Pantry runs. My daughter was looking for doilies on Etsy and was quite sad about how much they cost.

I should have picked all the last tomatoes yesterday! My neighbor had his back yard fence replaced. The workers trampled everything next to the fence, including on my side, and I thought that was it; but today they came back and sprayed stain on it. My tomato plants are near that fence, and I think the overspray has made them not safe to eat.

I have random logs, standing on end, in a circle. I have dug out some of the soil from the circle. I'll fill the pit with sticks, for hugelkultur. I'll mix the soil with compost and put it back on top of the sticks.

I get my Christmas tree from the state forest. It's skinny but I love it. You can give the forest service $5 and cut your own, or give their student group $25 and they cut one for you. Either way improves the health of the forest.

This was book group today. We read Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, and then went to look at some beaver dam analogs being built on a creek where our friend lives. There were beavers on this creek before the last but one forest fire. The beaver dam analogs do slow down, filter, and distribute the water, but they are hoping to lure beavers back.
