The astronomy club I'm a part of has a Discord for all of us to use. Last night one of the members was posting about some new AI image generation thing and posted a few images, one of which was generated #astrophotography.

Me and my friends in the club are rage chatting about it. It's fucking insulting to post that shit in a club half composed of astrophotographers. It's as if the thing we dedicate countless hours to doesn't matter.

Well, doing kintsugi on the bowl was, uh, interesting. I really should have done it in stages instead of being my ADHD self and attempting to do it all at once lol 😅

I got most of the way through gluing it back together before I ran out of the epoxy and had to stop. The bowl is a mess, with gold fingerprints all over it from me trying to make sure it didn't fall apart. Mixed some more of the epoxy and finished it off as best I could. Gonna need a lot of cleaning up tomorrow lol

There are probably better kits out there, I don't know. I did like how all the tools they included are silicone rubber. It makes them reusable and, more importantly, easy to clean once the epoxy cures. It includes gloves, but you will need more if you intend to do it more than a few times. I also suggest having paper towels on hand. It can get messy.

I'm continuing the kintsugi fun today by reassembling a broken ceramic bowl, the pieces of which have also been sitting out in the open for months now. I expect the bowl to be much more of a challenge. I might have to do as the instruction booklet suggests and do it in stages, so it doesn't simply fall apart under its own weight.

I went out with my #astronomy club on Saturday night and ended up staying up literally all night doing #astrophotography. I'm still working on processing everything that I captured because I kind of went hog wild and set up 4 telescopes (if you count my Seestar S30).

Also, I wish I had found this project sooner. Don't need to know the ridiculous table of mechanical tolerances to reproduce an ISO or ANSI thread. - Aurora is extremely temperamental and can change quickly. You might need to wait for a while before you see anything.
- Light pollution is your enemy. Get out of town if you can.
- Give your eyes several minutes to adjust to the low light.
- The aurora is much dimmer in person than you see in pictures.

My issue with AI is not about practical utility, it's about moral utility. I have come to the conclusion that it's a technology for which any potential benefits are massively overwhelmed by the costs — material, financial, and spiritual.

ChatGPT isn't nearly intelligent enough (or intelligent at all) to actually have a "goal", "plan", or "strategy" in the way that people do, but it doesn't need to. All it needs to do is convince enough people to do those things for it.

The second (and in my opinion, much more insidious and dangerous) task that LLMs are optimized to perform is to give the user the _impression_ of being useful.

A lot of times it does this by actually being useful, but that's purely accidental and incidental. It's only goal is to make you *think* it did something useful, and by any means.

That's why ChatGPT "hallucinates" facts; truth is irrelevant, only the _appearance_ of truth matters. A simulacrum of truth can be just as convincing.

People like to talk about LLMs as if they are a dramatic deviation from previous "AI" systems like AlphaGo. Those so-called "expert systems" have been trained and optimized to perform a single (or a few) well-defined tasks, while something like ChatGPT can "do anything". But that's a lie. ChatGPT and similar systems are just as focused and optimized on specific tasks.

The most obvious is to use language in a way that's as indistinguishable from a human as possible. To talk like a person.

Whenever you do anything, there are a million tiny choices involved. Many of those choices have objectively better or more logical options, but many are arbitrary. Some choices don't have a "wrong" answer.

I feel like an often overlooked component of art is agency. Yes, beauty, aesthetics, technical skills and competence are all obviously important when it comes to making art.

To me, the value of an artistic activity isn't in the output of the effort, but in the choices you make (or don't make). Every moment where you have an opportunity to express some degree of agency is also an opportunity for creating art. It's about the journey, not the destination.
