Avalanche II

Avalanches are a constant threat to skiers in western resorts and the ski patrol does a tremendous job working to keep the public safe. This avalanche was created by a controlled blast of a cornice at the top of a ridge.
Avalanche II shows the avalanche touching down once again as it moves toward the main traverse and easiest way down the mountain at Snowbird.

This image capture an old fishing boat sitting at the docks. The boat itself is in working order and there seemed to be a crew readying the boat for another trip out to see.

I found this scene in the northern part of the Napa Valley just south of Calistoga. I was just driving up the highway and I was attracted to the area by the little puff of fog sitting out in the middle of the valley. I pulled off at a turn out and was able to capture this vineyard image early in the morning.

The Pt. Reyes Lighthouse sits on the Northwestern Point of Pt. Reyes National Seashore in Marin County a little over an hour and a half north of San Francisco. The lighthouse wouldn't be so special if it didn't sit on the piece of real estate that it sits on.
To get out to the lighthouse a person must first walk down 300+ steps to get to the building.

This is more likely to happen during the warm summer months when you would like to spend time at the ocean. I caught this during the late spring. The afternoon was beautiful and the temperatures were in the mid 70's.

Living within a stones throw from California's famous Napa valley certainly has it's advantages.
I do prefer the late summer and fall for shooting any images at the wineries as the grape vines are full of foliage and bursting with fruit. Right around harvest time the vines start changing color as most broad leaf trees do at this time of year.

The Merced flows strong and hard and throughout the valley the dogwoods blossom. Most of the dogwoods in Yosemite have a very nice white blossom, there are a few pink dogwoods near the housing units for the park service employees. The dogwoods along the river seem to bring the most attention as nature lovers and photographers will gather around them for the perfect angle.

Kilauea Lighthouse

The Kilauea Lighthouse sits out on the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refugee on the north shore of the island of Kauai.
Construction began in July 1912 and the was dedicated in May of 1913. The light has a range of 9 miles and was used to guide ships into the harbor.
The peninsula is surrounded by a beautiful blue Pacific Ocean accented by fluffy white clouds and blue skies.

Havasu Creek

One of my more enjoyable stops on our trip was the stop at Havasu Creek. Not just for day 6 but for the whole trip. Such a beautiful little side canyon. The walls of this canyon are narrow and tall and steep. This made the hike a bit of a challenge in sandals.
The water here is almost the same turquoise blue as The Little Colorado River but with shades of deep green as well.

Tangle Creek Falls is just off of the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park. This beautiful waterfall that has easy side of the road access and should be a must stop place.. This rugged waterfall is 157 feet tall and cascades down several rocky levels as it pitches left and then to the right. I was able to use a slow shutter to give the water a silky appearance.

The lighthouse was completed at the end of 1896 but wasn't lit until it was manned and ready during the spring of the following year. The light was put on the National Register of Historical places in 1984.

I had one chance to get up in the mountains on a visit to Colorado some time back. Despite the nice sunny look, at 14,000 ft it was rather cold at the summit.

The bridge has been iconic since the first day it opened back in May of 1937. I've walked, cycled, and have been under her while heading out into the Pacific on a fishing trip.

For those not old enough, these skates were one size fit all as the two end slid together or apart depending on how you needed to adjust them. the final setting was adjusted with a key that locked the two halves in place.

The Palace Of Fine Arts is one of ten structures of this nature built for the 1915 Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco California. In 1964 the building was completely demolished with only the steel structure of the hall still left standing. It was rebuilt with a lightweight poured in place concrete. In 2010 the dome was seismically retrofitted.

People it seems are drawn to order. Check the right box, everything in its place, so on and so forth.
Turns out that maybe nature needs order. The grape vines are manicured, primped, and trimmed to produce the best, highest quality grape with acceptable yields. There is a balance there but I think it's safe to say that the farmers in the Napa Valley have this pretty much figured out.
