Speaking of people whom MIT should probably have stopped employing long before they actually did …

Carl Hewitt, of actor model fame, at least in his later years was notorious within his own part of the CS community as a crank.

He claimed that the actor model was more general than Turing machines and could compute things normal Turing machines can’t.

Does anyone know when he started claiming things like this? At least by the 2010s he was saying this kind of thing but I’m curious for how long.

I once heard an astrophysicist on Radio 4 opine that if alien species did exist and had interstellar travel, like in science fiction, then Earth would be famous throughout the galaxy for its solar eclipses; beings would come as tourists to Earth to behold this marvellous cosmic coincidence: a single moon which is exactly the right size in the sky to cover the solar system’s sun, leaving just a tiny ring of light while all around, the sky goes dark

      Advice to free software projects:

If you have any kind of long-term low-level issue with the legal entity/entities who have any involvement in your software (hosting, trademarks, personnel overlap, etc.), get your ducks in a row, and make sure you’re absolutely clear about what your current relationship is and what it will be in the future, *before* the Cyber Resilience Act comes into force.

You need to get serious about deciding where legal responsibility lies, and be happy with where it is.

I feel like it’s heavily implied (one drone with distinct dress, known by a name, maybe has more autonomy than other drones, apparently able to sabotage one day of Rowan’s training, and the ‘overjoyed to bend himself to Aphrodite’s desires beyond his own’ thing), but who Catty is and what actually happened to Leon are technically still left open

Full federation support is still a few years ahead of us, probably, but you can already set up your own forge in a way that minimizes inconvenience to users by using Codeberg as a single sign-on provider for a self-hosted forge.

https://git.madhouse-project.org/, which hosts the Iocaine project, is a great example of this. If you set up Codeberg as SSO for your own site, almost all of our content rules are irrelevant to you.

(Admittedly, I think Codeberg.org, run by a non-profit, as SPOF would be better than GitHub.com, run by Microsoft, as an SPOF, but that’s not the goal!)

      Another thorny accessibility-adjacent problem:

You have a web app like a social network where there’s a timeline that describes recent things people have done. ‘Alice updated her profile’, etc.

Users can choose the pronouns the site uses for them. ‘They/them’ is one of the options available.

But you want to make the site available in multiple languages. Some languages only have two gendered personal pronouns.

You don’t need to consider car parking, because if there isn’t space to park their car, citizens will simply make it disappear – fold it up and put it in their pocket. Where parked cars do appear, they’re essentially eye candy to make the city look more ‘realistic’ – but the game mechanic actually makes it unrealistic, because you don’t need to turn the nice overhead view of your city into this:

There’s an attempt, with the concept of ‘noise pollution’ that makes citizens sick, but it’s pretty weak.

The emphasis on car-based design is also strong because you can’t actually really ensure that capacity of public transport is sufficient to make it a fully viable alternative to driving.

Citizens will always hate higher taxation no matter how good the public services you provide are.

Whenever I see another round of the C++ community’s war against guaranteed memory safety, I think of Tony Hoare’s Turing Award lecture where he said that if computer engineering were real engineering, memory safety bugs would be considered criminal negligence.

He did not mean this as hyperbole. If you ship software and it fails in the real world due to a memory safety bug, they should find out who put their engineer stamp on the software and prosecute them criminally.

This particular case could probably not be appealed – the Scottish government hasn’t had its human rights violated; it would need a trans person affected by this ruling to make the case, aiui – but actually, on reflection, I think maybe yes. This decision, taken in the full picture of the current legal situation for trans people in the UK, completely shits on the resolution of Goodwin & I. v. United Kingdom
