For the others, I get them to work through this standalone hands-on guide that I wrote for this purpose (https://elenlefoll.quarto.pub/quarto4research) as homework and encourage them to attend one of the Quarto workshops that I regularly give at the University of Cologne. For the past two semesters, it's actually been former students of mine who've been giving these workshops because some of them have become real Quarto wizards and enjoy passing on their magic powers!

My M.A. linguistics/Romance studies students have to submit their term papers in Quarto with all the necessary files for me to be able to locally re-render it. It's a joy to see how they creatively use this highly flexible format for their projects. This morning I was about to award one student a grade of 1,3 for their paper (second best possible grade in Germany for an excellent paper albeit some methodological flaws), but then I realised that, in addition to their raw data, they also submitted a README and a data dictionary so I've changed my mind and have rounded that up to a 1,0. All my courses include a good dose of Open Science and it's wonderful to see students really taking these things on board! 😊

#HigherEd #linguistics #Romanistik #Quarto #OpenScience

I take serious issue with the The Guardian (npub13yw…wwpf)'s reporting on data showing increased cancer rates among young people "prompting warnings about lifestyle choices". It is completely inappropriate to suggest that cancer patients and survivors might have avoided their cancer had they made better life choices.

The article says very little about the causes of cancer, only stating: "WCRF said risk factors such as growing obesity levels, poor diet, insufficient exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking and environmental exposures (such as pollutants, chemicals, plastics, water and air pollution) could be contributing to the trend" and adding "About 40% of cancers are linked to these kinds of modifiable risks."

But that list mixes a lot of things: exposure to polluants, chemicals, plastics and pollution are not *personally modifiable risks*! These are society-level risks that require collective, i.e. political, action. So now is the time to report on irresponsible policies such as Germany's fuel subsidies or the EU's Food and Feed Safety Omnibus that aims to roll back safeguards protecting us and the environment from pesticides and are *currently* being implemented/negotiated NOT blame young people for not eating their fives-a-day. Seriously, what are we supposed to do: Cycle to work in more toxic fumes? Ingest more harmful pesticides by eating more fruit and veg?

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/oct/06/cancer-rates-rising-more-quickly-among-younger-people-international-study-finds

#PinkOctober #cancer #pesticides #EU #OctobreRose #cancer_colere #Tankrabatt #Krebs

In my "Introduction to Data Analysis in R for Linguists" seminar (based on my textbook: https://elenlefoll.github.io/RstatsTextbook/), I spend a lot of time on project management, file naming conventions, file formats, and reproducible workflows using Quarto. Some might consider it a waste of time because it means I have less time for other things (sorry ANOVAS, you're out!). However, this latest round of term papers has, once again, proven that this is well-invested time: my students are delivering fully reproducible term papers in Quarto format and, because they have a firm grasp of the basics, those that are motivated learn far more complex things than what I've taught them to complete really quite ambitious projects. Today's heartwarming quote from a [female] M.A. student: "I ended up having a lot of fun getting into the more technical, coding-heavy side of things, which surprised me! So thank you for that." And many go on to use R and Quarto for their MA theses! 🥰

#Quarto #RStats #linguistics #HigherEd

Hello #ggplot2 #dataviz experts out there!

I have created a map of Indonesia with some labels for a friend's publication (left), but she would ideally like the labels to be around the edges of the map (as in the second figure). Any ideas how I could achieve something resembling the second figure?

I try to be optimistic about academia, but then there are evenings like today...

I am reviewing a textbook on GenAI and second language teaching for a renowned commercial publisher. Although I now priorise reviewing for scholar-led, non-commercial publishers, the topic is of personal interest to me and I accepted this invitation because I wanted to ensure that critical AI literacies were well represented in this new textbook (and decent financial compensation was offered, which I admit was also a motivation). This evening, I started reading the preface (which was short but promising) and the introduction. After a couple of pages of pleasant reading, I came across a statement that I thought was odd so I decided to follow up on the reference that was used to support this statement. It turned out that the DOI in the reference section returned a 404. And that the entire reference does not exist! This made me suspicious so I went through all references in Ch. 1 and found three additional hallucinated references and several more incorrect DOIs! I'm not reading any further – will now stop working and attempt to write a polite review tomorrow.

#AppliedLinguistics #SLA #GenAI #academia

I was only made aware of this (frankly awesome) case of LLM poisoning today: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-01100-y. A researcher made up a disease and published two evidently fake preprints about it (including sentences such as “this entire paper is made up” and “Fifty made-up individuals aged between 20 and 50 years were recruited for the exposure group”), which were almost immediately picked up by LLMs and documented in their output. Worse, actual – supposedly serious – medical papers also started citing the preprints, demonstrating that academics relying on LLMs to do their work is a genuine problem! Not that I had my doubts but, if anyone did, this seems like the perfect demonstration of the problem. Article immediately added to the syllabus of the class I am co-teaching with Iris Ferrazzo on LLMs for Romance Studies/Humanities!

#LLM #GenAI #academia #research #ResearchIntegrity #humanities

I am trying my best not to be too pessimistic about the state of academia, but then there are mornings like today when I see that the Deutscher Hochschulverband [the German association of university professors] is offering a further training course entitled "Der Weg zum Forschungsantrag mit Multi-Agenten: Forschung mit KI neu denken" [Roadmap to a multi-agent research proposal: Rethinking research with AI]. This four-hour practical workshop demonstrates how to make use of multiple "AI agents" to review the literature, develop research questions and hypotheses, and write grant proposals. At a mere 250 € for members, the course is (of course) already sold out: https://www.dhvseminare.de/forschungsantrag_mit_multi-agenten_online-workshop. If, two years ago, someone had told me that it would be academics themselves that would make universities redundant, I wouldn't have believed them. Now I'm not so sure...

#academia #Hochschule #university

I really hate grading. I enjoy advising students, seeing them progress, and reading their work, but I would much rather give them extensive feedback and encourage them to revise their work than hand out grades. Right now, I have a case of a student who's clearly put in a lot of time and effort in a project, did some things really well, but also completely missed the mark on other aspects of the assignment and well... how do I grade that?!

#HigherEd

A relative has been without music and radio for nearly a year because they have a Sonos speaker that stopped working for no good reason. I’ve had to reinstall all the services, do manual updates, and work my way through several reddit threads to make everything work again.
Quite proud of myself as another, more tech-savvy relative had declared the thing bricked, but it’s ludicrous that it’s that complicated. Sad fact: Once you’re inside the #Eurostar terminal in Bruxelles Midi, there is no way to get a proper cup of tea. 😢 #BritOnTour #TrainTravels

* I am not counting the “lemon tea” that a vending machine will, if you trust it with your contactless bank card, unceremoniously pour you in a flimsy pastic cup between a watery coffee and an equally watery tomato soup.

I am only now realising that some (many?) undergrads do not understand the concept of sending a file via e-mail because they are so used to files being saved in clouds. It's the first time I've had to explain that, if I send you a file, then you now *own* that file and, if you modify it and then (accidentally) delete it, your version of that file is gone (or in the trash, if you're lucky). #GettingOld

I’ve been boycotting #Amazon for well over 10 years now and can confirm that it’s perfectly possible to live a happy life without it. As far as I’m concerned there were always more than enough reasons not to support this exploitative company, but if some folks are deciding that now is when they’ve had enough, then I’m all for it! I must say I had stopped hoping that this might one day become a thing. Gloomy times for sure, but you’ve given me a bit of hope today. Thank you! #boycottMusk

And I also don’t have the time or the inclination to maintain social media presence on two platforms. Curious about fedi bridges but, from, what I’ve read so far, it all seems rather involved.

I really appreciate the community I have found on #fosstodon but, if I'm honest, I think my career is likely to be negatively impacted by choosing #Mastodon as my only social media. I've seen a few posts about how people are getting much more engagement here than they used to on Twitter. I really value the exchanges I have here but my research community is largely not here... 🙁 #AcademicChatter

This was made obvious to me today as I logged on X for research purposes and saw this:

New year calls for a new #introduction – especially as mine's been out-of-date since March 2023... 😬

So, I'm now a #postdoc at the Department of Romance Studies at the University of #Cologne 🇩🇪. I work in the fields of applied #linguistics and foreign language #education. I like all things related to #CorpusLinguistics, #SLA, #LanguageTeaching, #Rstats & #OpenScience! 🤓

I also work as a freelance conference interpreter (🇫🇷 🇬🇧 🇩🇪) and like trains 🚄, bicycles 🚲, tea 🫖, cake 🍰 & emoji! 😇
