This handsome person was on a willow support in a pea garden bed. At first I thought it was a much more common Tachinid fly, but this is new to me: Mesembrina decipiens (I think, I'll see if I get any input on iNat), which is in the housefly family -though not a housefly, and clearly a bee mimic. I'm not sure what the adult feeds on (just saw the one, and it wasn't feeding) but it seems larvae likely develop in dung.

1 Extra excitement Saturday at work- beyond usual insane workload (triple in summer)- we had Wild weather including tornado within spitting distance (we could see it out the back door). It had been a hot humid day, severe thunderstorm watch, later tornado watch added- then actual warning as one formed nearby. Before that I saw the storm clouds coming + said 'I'm going out to do garbage 'now' before that arrives' lol

The Black Raspberry (Rubus occidentalis from garden hybrid seed) is in flower! It's one of the highlights of the season: not for the so so flowers, for the vast number/variety of #pollinators + predators drawn to it!
This is one of the highlights something I think I saw once before ever: a Bee-mimic Beetle Trichiotinus assimilis! Not a bee, not bee/wasp-mimic fly (lots of those) or even moth (some of those too)- a beetle!

This second one seems a bit more robust, and it posed long enough for me to go change to my micro lens. This was my excitement for the day :) Seems to be a Mesopolobus wasp parasites of various caterpillars usually some used as biological control.
Mix of sun + cloud this afternoon with rain + small hail! Then the sun came + went again (+again). I've started looking at foliage as much as flowers for places to find critters, + this tiny one was on the leaves / stems of poplar suckers.

Hoverfly- there were 2 huddled on a wall yesterday: temps below 10C/50F after a few days in the 20C/68F range + threat of showers. Today dipped a few degrees further + scattered snow flurries + strong winds. Next days near/below freezing daytime with possibility of a little to a lot of snow. Surprised to see these little people out already- only flowers so far are *some* of the aspens + willows.

We've had a long spell of well above average temperatures, and no new snow in weeks. All about to change with a brief (?) deep freeze and snow this week...starting tomorrow?
For me it's *always* about the light (and line, and texture!) but that may be even more true in winter when the colours are fewer and the lower sun gives dramatic light much of the day.

First #snow fell Saturday afternoon -Sunday morning (contrary to what some folks are saying, it's not early- *August* would be early, September typical, October late!). A few cm, nothing major, nights -5 to -9C /23 to15F, staying near/below freezing- so a lot of the snow has stuck around in the countryside at least: melting off the roof in the sunshine now, but largely in place on grass, plants etc.

This is a cool mid-size #moth (a couple/several individuals shot over a couple of days) that I saw for a week or so (2?), shot during the day on the wall/screen door of the old trailer, below a night light. They perch mostly wings out, looking very much like an autumn leaf! This is an odd one, and I'm going to cross post in a couple of places in the hopes that someone may see it who knows what it is! I'm assuming some sort of pupa, most likely moth? It looks as though it was hung there in that little wooly sock, but I imagine it is more likely that it was fully enclosed in a wooly cocoon, and either has started to emerge or some critter or weather has removed part of the cocoon? grass/sedge wetland

More early #flowers still tiny, few and scattered, but they will pick up speed quickly, with the next couple of days forecast in the 20C/70F range (then down, then up...lol)- even *some* nights above freezing! The first golden Crocus, first Pseudomuscari barely a few cm tall and first Scilla, which probably came as seed in the soil with the Arabis you see at its base (pale/pink rosettes).

Some cacti are very easy from seed. I've had pots chock full of seedlings, others things just 1 or 2. there are super slow growing species that take many years to achieve size, but many sorts could give flowers in the right conditions within a couple of years.
I"ve also had dozens of pots of seeds of all sorts (besides cacti) over the years that did nothing, while others from seed filled the acreage with flowers for months -- failed batches are just part of the game, don't give up!

Sorry to hear :( Sadly you can't always assume that seed suppliers are sending out good material. Beyond that, a few species (mostly hardy ones, but not all) require cold stratification (cold/warm periods as you probably know) or scarification (nicking) to germinate.
I'm sure it's just an artifact of the photo, but the soil looks dry? I'm sure you had it moist for the 90 days?

A little over a month ago, I sawa couple or several young coyotes, got a few pics of one, made a short vid-- that was my first direct sighting in years, and quite close (sometimes see them from the car at a distance),
I think today's was probably one of the same young ones, though a bit more grown up, and although farther away, I saw it for longer- it never did run away, got some not bad video :)

Super cute canid alert! I was out for a #SlowWalk for Mara's Day in August, had to detour due to lots of cows (+a bull somewhere!) In exchange I got to see the cute calves I showed before +a group of young #Coyotes ! They were just where cows had passed- presumably hunting at the edge of the wetland. Days at this season can be chilly if it's damp/cloudy or pleasantly warm if sunny -from below 10 to around 20C days, nights can be dipping near/below freezing- around -1 last night, probably our coldest of the season, so far.
This is the coldest time *inside* the house- no regular fires yet: I've been waiting for the wasps to be finished for the season before I go disturbing dead or fallen trees in the woods to cut firewood..lol

haven't seen Columbo since it was on tv the first time.. rarely had cable (couple of brief times in adulthood, when I wasn't watching tv regularly) and only have Netflix for streaming...lol I kind of miss (from a handful or more of years back) regular tv-- I did more stuff during commercials or reruns...lol.. don't have reception for any over the air channels anymore.

yeah, I was initially excited by the idea of solarpunk, but realised it doesn't quite fit my interests- I'm less interested in a concrete future than slightly different realities, less focus on technology etc- so I'll basically just stay away from the label since defenders seem pretty high-strung...lol
