I'm out the game here too, and re: political hedging: We've just seen how many people/institutions were seemingly panic selling on the day(s) after the Brazil elections with their unexpected outcome. So that made me think that the timing and numbers of these new quarterly tech reports this week were a good incentive to maybe not repeat that mistake so soon after... 🤷 I guess we will see next week...

I've been having the same feeling with the NYT in general, since T's first term. Maybe it always was compromised, but before that era, I had a few friends who worked in their data visualization team (which I think was having a major positive impact on journalism worldwide) and I think I was blinded by the amazing work they were doing, to not see the paper's larger dodgy editorial bias and sabotaging reporting of progressive developments (nor was I much interested in US pol at that stage)...

I'm really just wondering, not buying/supporting this... But I can't stand any more cliff hangers (in addition to midterms etc.). I think some of it might even have to do with the latter, i.e. weak sauce results are causing hedging to see what will happen on Nov 3/4. Part of me thinks this is when the real moves will start...

(The outside trough of a glacier's side moraine is where vegetation growth often is starting first (or contained in), where lower erosion provides better long-term stability and the trough itself ensures more accumulation of moisture/water and some protection from harsh katabatic winds... These young first generation forests are some of my favorite places, but due to the ongoing glacial melt and the coming water shortages in these valleys, they might never make it to fully mature, old growth stage 😢)

...back in London I participated several times in privately organized dinners with a similar setup: The hosts (German couple) would invite a small group of 6-8 people from disparate backgrounds (film makers, architects, bankers, scientists, artists, surgeons, etc.), cook fantastic multi-course dinners for them and then each of us guests was giving a 15-20 min presentation about our work, which was then discussed until the early morning hours... These evenings were some of the most intellectually & culturally enriching experiences I've ever had!

For many years, another friend used to run regular pub nights in Hackney, literally called The Enlightment Club. This was more of an ad-hoc social event, with open invitation and more what we'd call a "Stammtisch" here, but with discussion of vaguely enlightenment topics actively encouraged (i.e. those I also listed in my OP above)...

Reminder: This below is the signalling and attitude (plus much, much worse[1]) needed on display these days to raise ~$22 million (thus far) from Silicon Valley within just a few short months for an agent-friendly veneer of an existing open source project. Some of the same donors in turn have dropped their previous support (minuscule in comparison) of other FLOSS projects on which they've partially built their businesses on...

(One of) The fundamental issues with AI/LLM/agent use in #FLOSS is that what has been a culture of communities largely defining and organizing themselves through certain ways of creating/learning/working/maintaining/exchanging in the open, has slowly been turned into an anti-culture which is essentially only focused on free end results (products), produced ad-hoc, with source available, but more or less as a side effect, as just another output artifact from a black-box process, and definitely not a central organizing factor or value anymore...

We really need to start acknowledging this dichotomy of purpose & value and start refining our language to defend existing meanings of what "open source culture" is/was about...

Absolutely agree with your blog post. I'm taking most of my photos whilst on long walks/hikes, but it's often not feasible for me to be there at key locations around sunrise or sunset (though I do prefer evening walks), so I end with majority of pictures taken outside the two golden hours. Sure, there are many which don't make the cut because of the harsh light, but I also think sometimes that full blast daylight, hazy skies, the harsh shadows (or lack of shadows around noon) and other traditional no-no's are exactly what I'm looking for sometimes, esp. for more "abstract" mountain photography, or when wanting to emphasize the richness of textures/colors... As with other creative disciplines, there're a lot of dogmatic people & traditions/clichés around. Sometimes it feels great to just ignore all that and go with your gut, seizing the moment... Just as there are no mistakes in music, there aren't in other arts, landscape photography included... ;) Each one of us sees the world differently and we should celebrate & encourage that variety, esp. in this time & age!

Yeah, exactly! The largest I can go that way on my current setup is ~20x16" (50x40cm)... Since the transparencies are quite expensive at this size, it's only worth to do for some pictures, so I'm quite selective and only after several smaller test prints. But the final result really does feel very different than just a standard digital print, especially for kallitypes, where the analog processing also is a lot more involved, multi-staged and always has some inherent variance...

Yeah, exactly! Not considering small businesses with this new PPWR regulation has had absolutely disastrous consequences already (lots of small shops having had stop shipping to other member states or closing down completely). Don't know if you've seen my previous post[1] about the mess of a situation, but it's now taken ~60 days to have parliament and council to finally acknowledge and act on the problems this week, and hopefully fix/update legislation ASAP...

I think even the tactics employed are very similar. To achieve goals and focus public discussion, key politicians/aides/decisionmakers are either installed, voluntarily corrupted or blackmailed. The latter can take many forms, incl. social media lynching/disinfo campaigns, weaponized reframing/rhetoric, opposition funding, digging up dirt from the past, threatening with libel cases... We're so used to it by now, it almost feels like routine... Most mainstream media being privately owned makes this all even easier... 😩

In a lot of western countries, public broadcasters (as supposedly objective arbiters of news, at least more objective than privately owned media) have completely failed to adapt to these new realities and with their both-sides-equal argumentation actually been playing an active role in this subversion of control (maybe even via the same mechanisms, since corruption is always fractal). tl;dr The Council agrees with the urgent need for simplification and removing the EPR duties, albeit with different conditions than what parliament voted for a day prior (instead of max. company size and annual turnover, the Council proposes to use packaging volume as limit — fair enough and no difference to most micro biz).

The Council's position is: "[...]that producers of packaging and packaging of packaged products established in the EU may be exempted from the obligation to appoint an authorised representative in another member state if they make available on the market of that member state a quantity of packaging below 1 tonne per calendar year. The mandate also contains a safeguard clause in case a producer is found in breach with EPR obligations."

Although great news, I'm not sure about the timeline for next steps towards an actual change of law. The press release only states:

"The presidency will enter negotiations with the European Parliament on this file as soon as possible with a view to reaching a quick agreement."

"[...]the objective of concluding work on all simplification packages by the end of 2027."

I'm very much hoping that the EPR parts will be dealt with on a much shorter time horizon — most of the impacted businesses will likely NOT survive another 14 months (until end of next year)...

Still, one small win at a time! 🙌

SMEs and micro-businesses just don't seem to have much organization & representation at all, neither at national nor European level... But that itself I find highly dubious, since traditionally SMEs have been playing a major role in German politics, but maybe I'd been living away for too long to not see that changing over the past 20+ years...

For the PPWR most people cannot fathom the decision making process used nor the lack of understanding the importance for differentiation and/or gradation when designing a regulation with such major burdens and the insistence to apply the same rules for people using a handful of kilograms of packaging per year (if at all) vs. tens/hundreds of tons per year. For there to be no minimum quota, graded costs or for some countries to not even wanting to debate this as a real issue is more than worrisome...

🚨 Please read & act if you're running a small online shop in the EU or are even just a customer of one! These people need your urgent support! Otherwise the still new EU-wide packaging & waste regulation (PPWR) as it currently stands and is in full effect WILL kill most of the small businesses in the EU, incl. the livelihoods of artists, designers, illustrators, makers etc. who're trying to survive by selling physical goods online...

The legislation already came online in August, but it's been an utter bureaucratic mess! Official communication and clarification were even worse/absent for many weeks since rollout! An exemption from the most damaging parts for nano/micro-businesses was only voted[1] on in parliament today (almost 60(!) days after introduction), but with positive outcome! However this support by parliament is only a small win and we need more pressure on MEPs to clarify the severity of this situation for the next round(s) of negotiation with the EU Council and member states.

To clarify: The most damaging & costly part of this regulation is the requirement for a legal representative in each EU country you want to ship to. The cost of a single representative is several hundred Euro per yer per country. If you're intending to sell to the entire EU, that's worst case 27 middlemen to pay, aka (tens of) thousands of Euro in just regulatory fees every single year. It's completely unrealistic, disproportional, non-sensical and against every aspect of the single market principles... It is now easier to sell to outside the EU than it is to sell inside the EU! Make it make sense!

The only people this regulation benefits are major retailers and the growing compliance industry!

Added to my reading list... Just this weekend I was creating this little animation to visualize how light pollution has been somewhat decreasing in different areas of central Europe over the past 10 years, thanks to more public awareness, policies/regulation and tech innovations. In some places pollution also still going up, likely through ongoing urbanization... But the effects in rural France and Benelux region is very clear!

(As an aside (local interest): Note how Innsbruck and the Inn valley are so clearly standing out as brightest part of the Austrian Alps)

I only participated to the extent that I was selling a handful of my own algorithmic art pieces for the sole purpose of raising funds for my ongoing open source work and on one occasion donations to the Ukraine humanitarian fund... Otherwise I was touching that "community" only with a long stick, since I also (from early on) had to bring up criticism (in my eyes fully deserved) about dangerous scamming, speculation, other reckless behaviors and repeated attempts to rewrite history, about discrediting & ignoring people who've been enabling and paving the way for years/decades prior etc. Fueled by the smell of quick fame & money, it wasn't just that new community, but also older peers who I always thought would have shared values, but who quickly turned out to be a source of profound alienation & disappointment, much like what I see happening again in different FLOSS communities at the moment...

Yeah, I think about that POV very often myself, not just software, but also music, photography, painting and other art, the ephemeral nature of it all. The process of art making, esp. before the era of recorded media. But then I always return back to how I think software is somewhat different. It's a body (or bodies) of knowledge, like a library which accumulates meaning, wisdom and curation over time and which can be passed down generations... To me the main qualities of software are its endless malleability (at least as an ideal to strive for) and as a way to precisely encode knowledge via formal languages.

If the three+ decades of free (ab)use and lack of participation/reciprocation (financially or otherwise) of commercial players and governments have not killed FLOSS software projects/culture, it very much feels like LLMs and their euphoric adoption are finally succeeding with that by now, in some sense even in a suicidal manner...

In 2026, The Great Dying is upon us and some of the projects left standing will have already turned into institutions whose main goals will be survival, risk aversion (often in the form of sycophantic behavior towards sponsors) and increased centralization/hierarchy (internally and externally, as relating to their position in their own respective domains), involving the open sacrifice of other previously held values/goals and/or partners/groups of the community... The end (survival) justifies the means.

The larger effects are reduced diversity, choice and innovation. Equally, for those left outside and still having energy, resources & vision, it means more room and clarity to attempt something truly different, centered around the key lessons from these sociotechnical upheavals...

I never read the curse as a general judgement about the language nor that it says claims that it's impossible to create software using best practices and with an aim to be legible/maintainable by a large(r) group of people. But I think more niche languages like Lisp & Forth (and others) which also provide above average expressive control (incl. over syntax features) are very appealing & tempting to a certain lone wolf mindset which can quickly lead to the curse. Just like LLM usage, expressiveness/productivity at all costs can be addictive, and these two langs (Lisp & Forth) make it particularly easy to go after it and stop caring about social/interop aspects.

I remember many discussions on the Clojure mailing lists about overuse of macros & DSLs in some projects, not just because of composition or maintenance issues, but also that macros are much harder to debug and they're quickly leading to undecipherable black box code. Again, not necessarily an issue if one just builds stuff for an audience of one, but to me that's exactly what the curse is also about: Using single-user designs/techniques to build software which is then supposed to be rolled out to many and then the problems start...

But I also think Forth would a much better example since the effects ascribed to the "Lisp curse" are actually constituting peak idiomatic design/implementation goals in Forth, i.e. eschew general purpose libraries, every app is its own DSL, super terse documentation etc.

Also, I think for many agent-pilled practitioners (and pro-AI people in general) one of the major justifications is the 100% focus on results/goals only, meaning in that view software is a purely technical, temporary means to their end, but never seen as a grown cultural artefact, as community anchor or a store of knowledge, decision making, lessons learned, something which represents and articulates a certain aesthetic or worldview, and an object (or garden) which needs to be cared for and tended to... People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).

Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.

The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.

Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).

As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.

(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)

(I love scenes like this, exposing just how thin and fragile this carpet of life is in the high mountains, considering the ages/centuries, the obstacles it took to overcome and the relationships needing to form for this varied life to get and retain its temporary foothold here... It's inspiring and very symbolic to me)

I've been using it for a bunch of things, including removing:<li>unwanted parts from generated or parsed SVGs (e.g. data viz or icons)</li><li>cruft from old blog posts (which I've been batch converting from Blogger/Medium)</li><li>filtering parsed Markdown or HTML from user inputs in a web app</li>

I'll probably end up generalizing this setup a little more to allow any transforms/replacements instead of just removing (which could just be a default). But as is, I've been using it enough of times now to move it into a package for easier reuse... (Also uses https://thi.ng/zipper internally)
