The previous major fire that reached the village was 2017. I was here for that too, though lost nothing myself to it. That time round I focused on helping others to recover from the fire. This time it was my turn.<br/><br/>Part of the reason we are vulnerable here is that there are many fewer farmers. There used to be many goats and sheep on the mountain and they helped to keep the land here. Someone anonymous who lives in the village or who is connected to the village (there are many who moved to France to work but who return each summer to the village) bought me a small caravan to replace the lovely Tabbert Contessa gypsy caravan I used to live in. There was so much love and support after the fire - one of the advantages of living in a small village where everyone knows you.<br/><br/>I have abandoned most of the land for now, until friends come who can help to manage and develop it. A scrap merchant has taken some of the metal - the remains of the caravans and their sheds and contents - and promises to return for the rest when the fire risk subsides enough for them to cut up the large remaining pieces. I have water reconnected to the land - not abundant yet but enough for domestic purposes and we hope next year for there to be enough for irrigation too. If I can keep the land watered and green around this terrace where I live that should help to prevent such destruction when the next fire comes, which it inevitably will, probably in the next 8 to 10 years. I have solar power back, though battery storage is limited. It is enough for now, so long as I remember to turn my fridge off at night. We will have to see how we manage over the winter.
