There's subjects in math that can work as mercenaries, you hire them for the one job and you owe them no allegiance. CT seems to require a more solid integration in the structure of a theory, certainly a longer term game.
So that's what I was trying to get at in my OP.

Also, afaiu CT is very much isolated in its own corner because we cannot pump out theorems like 'real' mathematicians are supposed to do. Maybe I have a false perception.

Grant Sanderson wrote a guest post on Tao's blog:
> If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it https://terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/18/if-math-is-more-than-proof-we-need-to-better-celebrate-the-rest-of-it/

It's really nice! My fav kind of essay about math's existential crisis are those the put the accent on the inadequacies of current mathematical institutions and socio-scientific practices (prize culture & big problem fetish).

Sanderson also mentions Chow's notion of an 'open exposition problem', which he defined as follows:
> Solving an open exposition problem means explaining a mathematical subject in a way that renders it totally perspicuous. Every step should be motivated and clear; ideally, students should feel that they could have arrived at the results themselves.

This reminds me of Leinster's extended definition of 'category theory', from one of my favourite essays
> https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/category/2010/03/a_perspective_on_higher_catego.html

Leinster doesn't give a tweetable definition of what the calls the 'second meaning' of category theory, so one might summarize it as 'leveraging abstraction to reach clarity'; or 'making the trivial trivially trivial', as some used to say.

After a couple of years in applied category theory, I started accepting that CT was unlikely to make me prove striking results in mature areas of math, and that we should really embrace it's *clarifying* power as the real value of the categorical approach. This means embracing it in teaching and in exposition, and hopefully one day even in papers and grant applications (current AI turmoil might have the effect of making this much much easier).

This paper is uber-cool, linking Shannon entropy to groupoid cardinality (it's also short and elementary, worth a read!).

**Homotopy Cardinality and Entropy**
Andrés Ortiz-Muñoz
We explore connections between homotopy type theory and information theory through homotopy cardinality. We define probability types and random variable types, prove that homotopy cardinality respects dependent sums under truncation and decidability hypotheses, and show that it does not respect dependent products in general. Using the power series expansion of the logarithm, expressed type-theoretically through deloopings of finite cyclic groups, we formulate Shannon entropy as the homotopy cardinality of a type and derive the chain rule for entropy under a trivial-action hypothesis.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.10672

A very interesting aspect about this is that in Bayesian probability, the only accepted way to build a prior is through the so-called *principle of indifference*, namely the evident fact that 'equivalent' outcomes should be assigned the same probability. That is, one *starts* from a 1-truncated groupoid! And these are precisely the ones with the required properties in the preprint.

A corollary to this is that in the near future we might see easily-automated puzzle-solving lose status compared to human-guided theory-building. I wonder how this will change the social reality of mathematics, especially in the eye of the general public, where puzzle-solving is disproportionately represented...

I wonder if one could phrase their theorem as a uniqueness theorem for Markov functors from free Markov categories with conditionals into BR... much like your paper with Fritz and Leinster did for entropy...
