Hi. I’ll have you know, I had no idea there are people doing Tam Lin posts for Halloween annually - I didn’t know how many other Tam Lin posts are going out in the wild. It’s just that one of my favourite books is based on the poem and I thought it’d be funny to post something based on the poem. In short, going through your blog I’ve been introduced to a number of amazing posts, as well as learned of the existence of @tam-nonlinear. So I would like to thank you, as otherwise I’d have just continued with my

oh, i'm glad. abigail (tam-nonlinear) used to be like, The Tam Lin Poster (mostly serious posts and collected resources about variants of the ballad, but also shitposts). she died in early november 2016 so since then it's become a bit of an annual memorial thing for me, especially as she did used to post more around hallowe'en. one of the things that often makes me sad is that she really wanted her website (tam lin balladry) to continue as a living resource not just an archive, and that hasn't really been possible because it turns out people aren't replaceable and it takes somebody special to run something like that. but whenever i see super detailed analysis posts or statistics comparing variations or whatever, it makes me feel like something of that project endures.
i didn't know abigail very well, we just used to chat on tumblr occasionally. at this point sometimes it feels like the grief left a bigger space than the friendship ever filled in the first place, you know? it happens like that sometimes. but the annual tam lin posting extravaganza is my chance to contribute in a tiny way to keeping both that memory and also the spirit of Tam Lin Balladry going. and it's also an excuse to go out and find the things people have posted about tam lin in the past year since i last ventured into the tag
i also don't celebrate hallowe'en in general so it's a small thing for me to do on the date that isn't being a killjoy lol

hi guys. this outage sucks for everybody, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that one of AO3’s core principles is that the author retains sole distribution rights over their work. this is built into the functional design of the site and has been from the start. an author always has the right to hide or take down their works, whether it has one reader or a million. another AO3 user cannot even add an author’s work to a collection without their consent, and a lack of answer to the question is seen by default as a no.
if we actually value what AO3 does, not just as a place to get free entertainment, let’s keep this in mind over the next few weeks. we should not be passing around copies of an author’s fics without their permission and we especially should not be uploading copies of an author’s fics to another site without permission.

i think fic reposting and piracy of trad pub work are actually two completely unrelated topics with different issues. i am against both. but piracy is a labour issue; publishing pay structures and royalties are a fucking terrible and unequal way to pay creatives for their labour, but piracy doesn’t fix that, it just ensures the people at the sharp end of it get fucked over even more (basically everybody involved except the author is salaried. median wage for UK authors is £7.5k a year. that’s less than a third of minimum wage) (many UK authors earn more from PLR than from advances or royalties, as that can be up to £6.6k a year. please use libraries if you are in the UK, you are actively paying some very broke people when you do). it deeper entrenches exploitation of labour and justifies it by saying that labour was being exploited anyway so they should also get it for free
fic reposting isn’t a labour issue because fic is by definition not (paid) work, therefore the ethics are about different things. it’s a consent and community issue. it’s treating a gift as a product and the author as disposable instead of a voice in the ongoing conversation that is fandom. it’s using third parties to cut out someone who would either be happy to share direct with you or has reasons not to. it’s potentially sharing work into spaces that aren’t safe for that creator which they would otherwise have been able to avoid. and mostly it’s just kind of a dick move

my experience is that a lot of people are just completely clueless about chronology. they’re aware of patrick but they can’t pin him to a century or they have no idea of the order of events, what happened when and who did it. i used to work in libraries and i’ve been asked if the medieval period was before or after the romans, for example. you can’t underestimate the extent to which people just don’t have a sense of the years and therefore their timeline is completely scrambled
i have a colleague for example who was like “so … fifteenth century, is that pre-christian?” and I’m like. um, no, you’re about a thousand years out there. but he didn’t have any sense of when patrick etc were supposed to have been
a separate phenomenon is just not entirely thinking things through. there are probably some people who actively disbelieve that christianity came around the time of patrick, but more often people are just so focused on a particular narrative that they don’t think through what they actually know about a thing. an attitude i see often online is that ireland was forcibly christianised by “the english”. this is fundamentally untrue, and if you think through timelines and when the english started existing and when they showed up in ireland, this would be obvious. but that step is frequently missed because people are focused on their story of the past
one reason this happens is that amidst the penal laws etc a lot of the rhetoric from protestant writers framed catholics as clueless pagans whose barbarous practices needed to be stopped. i have seen these quoted as evidence that “the english” stamped out “irish paganism” during the tudor period and beyond. again, if you look at the timelines and circumstances you would realise that this is reformation rhetoric, not evidence of pre-christian belief. but a lot of the time people don’t step back to consider the context and dates because the basic frameworks of history are missing for them
i don’t blame people for having a scrambled sense of timelines. a lot of the time my main sense is that people have been deeply failed by their education not to have been given the absolute basics they could use to explore further. that’s why when i worked in libraries i stopped saying the children’s history books were chronological and started just helping people find what their kids needed for their homework, while explaining the timeline in basic terms en route. but when it comes to internet discourse, i DO take issue with people with no understanding of basic chronology pontificating about history they don’t understand at all. and unfortunately every day i am experiencing this

also i know full well that most schools don’t teach this stuff. my school’s idea of history started some time in the late nineteenth century, though i did also get to study roman britain in class civ, so that helped as a counterpoint. i never studied the tudors beyond “henry VIII had six wives” and i certainly never studied the reformation, tho i know they were on the curriculum for some schools
but. you know. if you want to talk about what was going on in the early modern period and in ireland from the tudors through to william of orange, you are absolutely going to have to get to grips with the reformation and counter-reformation and everything that went along with them, because otherwise a lot of it makes NO SENSE. it’s pretty central in redefining irish identity as something distinct from gaelic identity, it’s a huge factor in land ownership and power dynamics, it’s everywhere in the literature and rhetoric. you can’t talk about ireland as a colony without it. you can’t talk about england in this period without it either, but for slightly different reasons, and people aren’t usually trying to erase it in favour of an ahistorical paganism that suits their vibes better
it’s fine to not know things. you just have to know that you don’t know them, so that you can look them up before you rest a worldview on something that can’t stand up to the slightest scrutiny

it is always fucking wild to me that people will whole-heartedly believe that the “witches” prosecuted under, say, James I/VI - that is, in the 17th century and onwards - were practicing some kind of pre-Christian “old religion”.
like even if you think that the “witches” in question were actually pagan (hint: they were not), the idea that there could be an Old Religion untouched by existing entirely in a Christian context for over a millennium rests on a complete blindness to how religion works.
the Christianity of the 17th century was not the Christianity of the 7th century. the Judaism of the 17th century was not the Judaism of the 7th century. the Islam of the 17th century was not the… ok, so Islam did actually start in the 7th century, maybe a bad example.
the POINT is that no religion remains untouched by its cultural context for centuries on end. and at the time of Daemonologie, let alone later witch trials, both Scotland and England had been fully Christianised for at least 700 years.
that’s not to say that there were no other religions present. there was still a small Jewish minority in Britain, although it was illegal to be Jewish in England from 1290 to 1656 (Edward I has a lot to answer for). there were probably a handful of Muslim traders in both Scotland and England. but that… might be it? and those were not native religions. they were not pre-Christian. they were introduced through migration, usually well after the Romans left.
the “witches” of Pendle Hill or Slains/Aberdeen or North Berwick were Christian. they had no “old religion”. they knew absolutely nothing about pre-Christian customs, because nobody did (and we still don’t!), because “pre-Christian” was as far from them as the Norman Conquest is from us.
and this feels especially gross with witch trial discussions, because “they were persecuting pagan women!” is only half a step above “they were persecuting Real Witches!” in ahistoric, insulting bullshit.
the “witches” of the early modern period were JUST NORMAL PEOPLE. they were not DOING anything, not even anything understandable and valid like choosing to practice a proscribed faith. if they were wise women or healers, then they were, in almost all cases, performing “magic” in a way which had been part of British Christian practice for centuries. “magic” that included praying to the saints, invoking (Christian) divine blessing, or communing with angels - or maybe devils, I don’t know, but definitely Christian ones.
and it’s worth noting that even James I/VI, a fucking rabid dog when it came to witchcraft, didn’t actually think that witches were pagans. he thought they were Evil and that they consorted with the Devil, but it was never in question - to him or anyone else at the time - that they also believed in the Christian God and in Christian cosmology. the whole idea was that witches were Evil Christians, who were doing the Evil Christianity. this is distinct from, for instance, how people at the time (including James himself) wrote about Jews, Muslims, or indigenous Americans, who they might think were evil and “savage”, but they recognised as practicing a different religious tradition. if they thought that witches were pagans or druids or otherwise Not Christian, they would have said so.
the ways in which people want so desperately to argue that the victims of witch trials were, in any way, Actually Witches is just. ugh. please fucking don’t.

my experience is that a lot of people are just completely clueless about chronology. they’re aware of patrick but they can’t pin him to a century or they have no idea of the order of events, what happened when and who did it. i used to work in libraries and i’ve been asked if the medieval period was before or after the romans, for example. you can’t underestimate the extent to which people just don’t have a sense of the years and therefore their timeline is completely scrambled
i have a colleague for example who was like “so … fifteenth century, is that pre-christian?” and I’m like. um, no, you’re about a thousand years out there. but he didn’t have any sense of when patrick etc were supposed to have been
a separate phenomenon is just not entirely thinking things through. there are probably some people who actively disbelieve that christianity came around the time of patrick, but more often people are just so focused on a particular narrative that they don’t think through what they actually know about a thing. an attitude i see often online is that ireland was forcibly christianised by “the english”. this is fundamentally untrue, and if you think through timelines and when the english started existing and when they showed up in ireland, this would be obvious. but that step is frequently missed because people are focused on their story of the past
one reason this happens is that amidst the penal laws etc a lot of the rhetoric from protestant writers framed catholics as clueless pagans whose barbarous practices needed to be stopped. i have seen these quoted as evidence that “the english” stamped out “irish paganism” during the tudor period and beyond. again, if you look at the timelines and circumstances you would realise that this is reformation rhetoric, not evidence of pre-christian belief. but a lot of the time people don’t step back to consider the context and dates because the basic frameworks of history are missing for them
i don’t blame people for having a scrambled sense of timelines. a lot of the time my main sense is that people have been deeply failed by their education not to have been given the absolute basics they could use to explore further. that’s why when i worked in libraries i stopped saying the children’s history books were chronological and started just helping people find what their kids needed for their homework, while explaining the timeline in basic terms en route. but when it comes to internet discourse, i DO take issue with people with no understanding of basic chronology pontificating about history they don’t understand at all. and unfortunately every day i am experiencing this

i'm gonna add some more detail here since anon is asking in good faith. there is a really common strand in arthuriana criticism, particularly of an older kind but it still appears, which looks for weird supernatural shit in arthuriana, attributes it to the "celtic" origins of arthuriana, and assumes that it comes from older, pre-christian pagan beliefs. it makes sense that people would assume welsh arthuriana is The Pagan Bit, because a lot of writing about arthuriana could lead you to believe that!

tbh yvain is rescued by lunette long before he ever rescues her so really it’s a whole mutual rescuing situation and i just think we are doing these men a disservice if we forget all the times they have only survived a situation because at some other point in the story they sprang a random woman out of jail / killed a guy for her / otherwise did her a solid
these women are not helpless they are just sometimes inconvenienced and need someone else to punch someone about it
okay i just double checked and the lancelot incident involved a “sharp, heavy axe” not a pickaxe specifically but. regardless. bademagu’s daughter is showing up with Equipment
Lancelot being rescued by maidens is such recurring thing in his stories, I am sure there are more but him being aided by Maleagant’s sister and being bailed out of prison of four witch queens’ by Morgana’s handmaiden first come to mind.
And even when he is physically saving them, it is less “damsel in distress saved by brave knight” and more “poor Lancelot gets roped in by passing woman to slaughter her enemies on her orders”.
Such fun detail of arthuriana to me!

Lunette and Yvain’s weird mutually beneficial friendship is one of my favourite details. Just the thought process of “this guy murdered my boss, I will set him up with my boss’s widow to raise my standing at court” is delightful to me.
And it is very interesting to consider in light of, courtly love and women commisioning romances, like emphasis on men being weapons or vassals of ladies…

i do think generally chretien de troyes’ romances (maybe minus perceval) because are really good starting points because they are straightforward enough and manageable enough to read in entirety and actually have a cohesive narrative whereas malory and vulgate cycle are both sooo meandering and you kind of have to be episodic about how you read them and skip around. and they are just such long insane texts to start with. i also think gawain and green knight/dame ragnell are nice entry points too. they feels less connected to wider arthurian narratives than chretien who sets up a lot of stuff that later authors use which is maybe why i would recommend chretien as a more integral arthurian read but all of these are good
tristan and iseult texts are also underrated as starting points. gottfried and beroul and thomas versions all are good, gottfried is probably best to start with just because that’s complete as far as i remember whereas beroul and thomas are fragmented. but these are also pretty straightforward narratives where you can get introduced to characters and chivalric arcs before hopping into the labyrinthine depths of malory and vulgate cycle.

did a big shop today and got some crisis supplies as per the government advice. there isn’t a huge amount of shelf-stable food that i can eat, let alone that can be eaten cold in a power cut, but i figured having some emergency supplies in would also be handy for situations like “just came back from travelling and haven’t been shopping” or “fuse blew and everything in my freezer is a goner”, in which case all it needs is long dates
anyway if anyone was looking for ideas i got a few tins of peas and sweetcorn, and cream of tomato soup (these are basically the only tinned foods i can eat). i also got some premade jelly pots which don’t have to be kept in the fridge, because while they are nutritionally useless, they can provide some joy when one is otherwise out of snacks and I think there are many situations where this is important! i topped up my oatcakes and cracker supplies excessively, though i do run through these quite fast so that won’t last. and i got some gluten free cereal (dated spring next year) and a carton of long life milk, so if i have no bread and no oatcakes i can still have breakfast
i also got some more long life gluten free bread rolls. again these will have to be replaced in a couple of months, i think they’re dated january, but for “ah fuck I’m out of bread and don’t feel up to going to the supermarket” situations they are always useful and i am frequently grateful for them. which is why i had run out
i don’t live somewhere that gets power cuts often (I’ve never experienced one in this city as far as I can remember) but i AM someone with dietary restrictions that make cooking more essential so i might at some point in the future acquire a camping stove. also for use when i get my kitchen redone tbh! but for now that seems overkill. biggest threat here would probably be a) floods making it hard to get to the shops as i have to cross a river to get there, or b) supply chain disruption meaning foods I can eat were less available IN the shops, so just having some long life foods in is important
what i do NOT have is any bottled water supplies, partly because i have nowhere sensible to put them if i got them. my kitchen is not large and my flat in general lacks storage space. i will get some at some point cos again, you never know when you might personally burst a pipe even leaving aside larger natural disasters
but it does make me feel a bit better to know i have some kind of supplies in the house that aren’t in the freezer

When I was younger and more abled, I was so fucking on board with the fantasy genre’s subversion of traditional femininity. We weren’t just fainting maidens locked up in towers; we could do anything men could do, be as strong or as physical or as violent. I got into western martial arts and learned to fight with a rapier, fell in love with the longsword.
But since I’ve gotten too disabled to fight anymore, I… find myself coming back to that maiden in a tower. It’s that funny thing, where subverting femininity is powerful for the people who have always been forced into it… but for the people who have always been excluded, the powerful thing can be embracing it.
As I’m disabled, as I say to groups of friends, “I can’t walk that far,” as I’m in too much pain to keep partying, I find myself worrying: I’m boring, too quiet, too stationary, irrelevant. The message sent to the disabled is: You’re out of the narrative, you’re secondary, you’re a burden.
The remarkable thing about the maiden in her tower is not her immobility; it’s common for disabled people to be abandoned, set adrift, waiting at bus stops or watching out the windows, forgotten in institutions or stranded in our houses. The remarkable thing is that she’s like a beacon, turning her tower into a lighthouse; people want to come to her, she’s important, she inspires through her appearance and words and craftwork. In medieval romances she gives gifts, write letters, sends messengers, and summons lovers; she plays chess, commissions ballads, composes music, commands knights. She is her household’s moral centre in a castle under siege. She is a castle unto herself, and the integrity of her body matters.
That can be so revolutionary to those of us stuck in our towers who fall prey to thinking: Nobody would want to visit; nobody would want to listen; nobody would want to stay.

I have a gift for falling in love with random objects. One time, my aunt got me a little rubber chicken, and whenever I squoze it, a little egg thing popped out. Very silly. Except that chicken became something like my best friend. I carried it with me to school, and I kept it with me in my pocket, and whatever social hazards there were about Being The Guy Who Got Stressed Whenever His Rubber Chicken Was Missing were far outweighed by being The Guy Who ALWAYS Had a Rubber Chicken On Him. There’s a lot of comedic opportunity that comes with always having a good prop on your person.
Of course, the chicken did eventually. Explode. And such was my grief that I did not eat for 36 hours. This was very stressful for many people. Mostly my mom. I was a very strange child to work with. She took parenting so incredibly seriously, and then I’d pitch her these curve balls like refusing to eat for a day and a half because my rubber chicken died. No parenting book tells you what to do when that happens. You just have to feel it in your heart.
A less tragic story of an object that I fell in love with was a large, foam toad that I found in a trinket shop. The toad was the size of a very large grapefruit. Much too large to carry with me to school (thank god) but enough that I could move it around the house, to keep me company during my solitary pursuits. If I was reading, the toad was there, and if I was tinkering with legos, the toad was there, and even when I slept, I would wrap the toad up in layers and layers of blankets, and then spoon it. I did this until the rubber coating on the foam started to wear out, and the foam started to get brittle and break down and leak this repulsive yellow powder. Then I simply put the toad in the playroom and would consult it on matters of great importance. Eventually I stopped doing that, and someone took the opportunity to dispose of it. Not sure who. By the time I noticed its absence, too much time had passed for me to actually be sad. As an adult, part of me thinks I would have maybe liked burying the toad, but part of me also thinks I might have refused to part with the toad, which would have resulted in it leaking more repulsive yellow powder into the house. So I understand why that decision was made.
I want to state that this does not happen often, and it does not happen on purpose. I don’t choose to fall in love with random objects. And it’s always a little bit embarrassing when it happens.
Which brings me to my wife.

but I will still be left destitute in a gross house with no community connections, no creative outlet, and my body falling apart even more. not sure what part of that is unclear actually? these are tasks I must do to materially improve my conditions, and not doing them is part of a different downwards spiral?? their value is not contingent on whether other people approve of them???

“does this need to be done perfectly or does it just need to be got out of the way?”

NOT HELPFUL:
“nobody will be mad at you if you don’t do it” (don’t care! not about who will be mad at me!)
“this only matters to you” (ok but it DOES matter to me!)
“nobody actually expects you to do all that” (even if it is true that nobody expects me to do all those things simultaneously, that doesn’t mean that people don’t expect me to do all those things individually. and people are all like “oh that’s ok you can let some things slide” until you decide it’s their thing you should let slide. also, again: stop calling me nobody)
“don’t worry about quality! it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be done” (this is true for many things, eg. doing exercise or cleaning the house. it is NOT actually true for applying for jobs, for instance, where the point is not “have applied for jobs” but “have a good chance of actually getting a job”. context.)
“don’t stress so much” (fucking HOW)
“take a break, the thing will still be there when you come back” (often untrue, deadlines exist)

You understand that right?
Also very important that is you ask any of those questions, that’s the start of the conversation, not the end.
At least for me, what I want from people when I’m stressed is either for them to butt out and let me get on with things, or (if they have the capacity and inclination to help) for them to work through my to-do list with me and be a sincere, outside perspective on how urgent things are and whether I’m missing an obvious solution. Not on whether the things need to be done at all, because clearly I already think they do.
If you hear “I have to do This Thing!” and it seems obvious to you that the Thing does not actually need to be done (which can be the case!) then I think it’s usually better to ask why it needs to be done than to say that it doesn’t. Sometimes the person you’re trying to help will actually go “Huh… I suppose it doesn’t need to be done, really”. More often they will explain to you why it is important to them, and you have to meet them where they’re at on that.
But it’s not helpful to come in hot with reasons it DOESN’T need to be done. And it’s definitely not helpful to come in having decided it doesn’t need to be done, and refuse to hear someone telling you that it does.
If you have time and energy, the most helpful thing you can do is be a sounding board, and ask questions you’re genuinely engaged with the answers to. Help people work through their thoughts and plan their workload, rather than telling them how to feel or what to do.
If you DON’T have that time and energy, that’s okay! It can be helpful to have someone just see that you’re struggling and express sympathy. You don’t have to fix it. You probably can’t fix it, not in one conversation. It’s up to you how hard you can try.
final note but also please consider dignity of risk (i.e. the right to make bad decisions for oneself)
I told my partner I was organising an art group for work colleagues tomorrow and he got genuinely annoyed at me (and let me know it) because I’m already overstretched and he keeps trying to dissuade me from taking on more projects.
but also he then helped me find my art supplies and move them to the car, and let me know that he’d be around to bounce thoughts off if necessary.
this is because he knows he’s not going to convince me to Not Do The Thing, not least because I’m already committed, so he is letting me know he’s concerned and would have chosen a different situation, but also doing what he can to lighten the load in the situation that exists.
and that helps me to both take “hey stop doing things like this” on board (because it’s not just scolding) and to handle the Too Much I’ve put on my own plate. and it means I trust him that little bit more.

historiography is so often more interesting than history. or is that just me
the history of historiography especially lol. “people emphasised x and took y approach because of a, b, and c that was happening in their own period”
i am a lot less interested in what happened than in what people thought happened and how they used that to understand their own circumstances
obviously all primary sources are written from somebody’s perspective. but i mean like. how did the seventeenth century perceive the sixteenth and how was that different to how the eighteenth wrote about it and then how did that differ from how the nineteenth century described it. one sixteenth century! often the same set of primary sources! but three different ways of writing about it! why is that; what uses did it serve in those periods; how was that perception shaped by other aspects of the authors’ worldview and experiences
it’s especially fun when a Significant Event visible in hindsight wasn’t yet understood for its significance because authors were too close to it and couldn’t yet see the bigger picture of its impact, because that’s when you get the most divergent approaches i think. also seeing which figures become heroes and points of reference for How We Should Act vs who gets ignored because they don’t suit the current situation well, only to get rehabilitated as heroes a hundred years later when circumstances had shifted enough that now they were useful again

yeah it’s interesting you should bring up that example specifically (nationalism and independence and imagined communities) because that’s the exact thing i’ve been thinking about – how ireland has perceived its own past over the centuries, which events are seen as important, who is seen as irish, etc.
as i said i was actually always a lit specialist in my studies rather than a historian, i studied history to some extent but my focus was on literature and my recreational interest now is still in that direction. so obviously i’m interested in how stories get used, but sometimes the stories are about real events too. the skillset is slightly different because the material has more of an origin point, there’s a more defined subject to compare different approaches to, etc, but also a ton of overlap!
my undergrad history modules grappled with this to some extent but more from an angle of “what does what the secondary sources think happened tell us about what happened / how can we determine Events” (since the early medieval period often has such fragmentary written evidence) vs “what does what the secondary sources think happened tell us about the sources and their authors”; it’s the latter i’m recently intrigued by and a slight shift in emphasis

pictish was probably a celtic language as well, but brittonic rather than goidelic/gaelic – more like welsh than like gàidhlig. however that has been gone for a very long time and doesn't survive beyond a few place and personal names, hence the slight uncertainty about its nature

OP: Here’s my experience from last summer. Temperatures in Shanghai stayed above 35°C through July and August last year. I almost never turn on the air conditioner at night, only run a fan. Waking up soaked from the heat was pretty normal. Then I roll over, and my arms and legs touch something nice and cool. It’s not that sharp shocking cold that makes you shudder just really pleasant. What’s more it holds a steady cool temperature. No matter how long I hug it, it barely warms up. Once my skin moves away from its surface it cools down quickly again. It regulates itself surprisingly well. You don’t need to worry about it turning lukewarm.
Pros Great at keeping a constant cool temperature energy-free totally silent thick rind means it lasts a long time up to three months multi-purpose you can even hold it while doing squats or use it as a barrier so you don’t roll off the bed. Cons You’ll reek of vegetable odour after sleeping all night with it. You can’t eat it afterwards. Don’t get any ideas about turning it into a stuffed winter melon bowl. Don’t ask how I found out. It’s really heavy. Getting it home from the market is tough and throwing it away later is just as much hassle. The inside turns completely mushy watery pulp so you have no choice but to dump it. AC and electric fans can be found in nearly every household across China, yet not everyone likes keeping the AC running nonstop. Some people with extremely weak constitutions cannot stand air conditioning at all, nor can they bear constant airflow. That’s why people have come up with all sorts of ways to beat the heat.
Winter melons are 96% water. Their surface stays several degrees cooler than the surrounding air, so sleeping with one in your arms is basically hugging a natural cold water pack. As long as the rind stays intact, you can use it all summer. Just watch out for ruptures — if it splits open, all the liquid inside leaks out. Using winter melons to beat the heat has been a folk custom in China since ancient times.
There’s also the zhufuren竹夫人(literally bamboo lady, aka bamboo wife), a similar popular cooling tool. It’s a hollow cylindrical cage woven from thin bamboo strips. Air flows freely through its gaps, carrying heat away nonstop.
Chinese people had plenty of other clever ways to stay cool. In 1978, the bronze jian fou was unearthed from the Marquis Yi of Zeng’s tomb in Suizhou, Hubei. Dating back over 2,400 years, it’s China’s ancient version of a refrigerator. Ice went in the outer vessel, and wine was stored inside the inner container.
The Tang Dynasty had cool pavilions built next to water. Waterwheels channeled cool air indoors. Some even pumped water up to the rooftops to create artificial water curtains. The cooling trick relied on waterwheels spinning fans paired with flowing water.
By the Tang Dynasty, plenty of icy treats already existed. The most famous one was su shan酥山, an icy dairy confection. Modern researchers have worked out its general recipe. First, heat dairy cream until it nearly melts and turns soft. Drip it onto a plate to shape it like rolling mountains, then store it in an ice cellar to freeze solid.
Song Dynasty people enjoyed frozen drinks too. Records of the Eastern Capital’s Dreams documents summer treats sold in Bianjing, the Northern Song capital.
Cold treats grew far more diverse in the Song Dynasty. Historical records show that as early as 962, the third year of the Jianlong reign—the exact timeframe featured in Where Winds Meet—the imperial court set up the Bingjingwu冰井务(Ice Well Service), an official department dedicated to making cold food for summer relief. Every summer the government handed out these icy delicacies to officials to help them beat the heat. Booming Song Dynasty commerce gradually made cold drinks accessible to ordinary people, and the variety of icy treats available to civilians expanded greatly. Documents note three major cold drink shops operating in Kaifeng, capital of the Northern Song, selling a huge range of refreshments including bingxue(icy snow), cold congee soup, licorice decoction, preserved papaya, fresh papaya, chilled lychee paste, golden tangerine balls, snow foam spleen-soothing drink, elsholtzia beverage, perilla drink, cold rice wine drink, soapberry syrup, sweet soybean candy, mung bean water, brined plum drink, jiangcha tea, Wuling San herbal mix, Dashun San herbal mix, lychee cream and snow foam plum wine. The most common cold drink back then was bingxue冰雪❄️, comparable to modern ice pops. In winter Song people filled bronze basins with water mixed with sugar, sometimes fruit juice and plant gel, and left them outdoors to freeze solid. These blocks were then stored in ice cellars. The following summer they would cut the frozen slabs into chunks or carve them into animal shapes such as dogs and foxes to sell at cold drink shops.
Street vendors also sold frothy soybean drink, pear juice, plum syrup, ginger honey water and papaya nectar. The menu rivals today’s trendy bubble tea shops. Vendors set up stalls everywhere — at street corners, alley entrances and bridge crossings.

this is partly because I’m reading a book for work which is set in scotland-but-a-bit-magic and like. it’s not doing this, bc it’s set in scotland. it’s doing some other things. but it made me think about this. it’s also not a particularly good book so far and unfortunately it is a case where i need to be polite about it for work reasons so i cannot be more specific but anyway. it’s doing a different Generic Scotland thing. but that thing does involve some arbitrary naming patterns and Use of Creatures
actually this is a good question because, like, i use the term “celtic” pretty narrowly most of the time to refer to things that are in languages which belong to the celtic language family. scots is a germanic language, so it isn’t celtic. however, scotland’s broader modern identity is often aligned with Celticness. is it correct to refer to motifs from folklore exclusively in scots or english as being “celtic” because it is from scotland? it can’t, to my mind, be called “gaelic”, because that is a more specific and narrower identity. but “celtic” means many things to many people, and perhaps that is more up for debate here
i am thinking for example of the use of “seelie” alongside gaelic terms like “sidhe” – and the fact that this causes it to get transplanted to ireland, perceived in the eyes of many fantasy authors as the Correct location for celticness – and the extent to which this is collapsing two quite different traditions together and erasing the differences between them
but i am deeply not an expert on scotland and scottish folklore, esp stuff in scots and which isn’t shared with ireland, so these are really just open ended thoughts I’m pondering rn!

genuinely if you are reading a secondary source about medieval irish literature and it doesn’t mention anything christian, it’s a big red flag for the reliability of that book. while the christian frameworks, biblical refs etc are less obvious in some texts than others (they’re not super obvious in the táin, though some classical refs are, but they are super obvious and explicit in both the early and late versions of the death of cú chulainn, for example), there is no medieval irish literature that was not written by christians, and that worldview is inextricable from the literature as it exists. those are the stories that we have. if a modern author is giving you a version of the material without that, it is because they have cut it out in order to make the literature match their idea of what irish literature ‘should’ be like, rather than accurately describing to you what it is like
also not to put too fine a point on it but you should consider the agenda of anyone who wants to present ireland as an isolated unique culture that took no influence from any literature from any other area, instead of acknowledging that irish people were travelling far and wide in europe and people from other countries were travelling to ireland and many of the scholars writing these texts were familiar with other languages and other stories

it’s especially fun when a Significant Event visible in hindsight wasn’t yet understood for its significance because authors were too close to it and couldn’t yet see the bigger picture of its impact, because that’s when you get the most divergent approaches i think. also seeing which figures become heroes and points of reference for How We Should Act vs who gets ignored because they don’t suit the current situation well, only to get rehabilitated as heroes a hundred years later when circumstances had shifted enough that now they were useful again

the first time I went in there I pointed at one of those extra-skinny baguettes and said “a flute, please” feeling pretty sure of myself, and the baker said “… that’s a ficelle” (you idiot) (was implied) “a flute is twice as large as a baguette.”
That’s insane, first of all, a flute is a skinny instrument. Call your fat baguette a bassoon, lady—I made some timid remark about how it would make more sense for a flute to be a skinny bread and the baker said, “In Paris it is. I thought you were from the South?”
oh, that hurt
I guess I’m from the part of the South that’s so close to Italy the bread’s waist size matters less than whether it’s got olives in it, but I left the bakery having an existential crisis over whether living in Paris had made me forget my roots
the Least Intimidating Bakery just had normal baguettes vs. seedy baguettes vs. horny baguettes (easy mode, some have seeds, some have horns), while the new bakery has breads that are only different on a molecular level—there’s a good old loaf and then another, identical loaf called a bastard? google told me a bastard is “halfway between a baguette and a bread” but denouncing them like “those are not regulation-sized bastards” would get me banned from the bakery for life
on my 2nd visit (while I stood in line discreetly googling baguette terminology) there was an English tourist who asked for a baguette while pointing at what was either a rustique or a sesame and I felt a bit worried for them, but the baker just clarified “this one?” to waive any responsibility if they found out later it wasn’t a classic baguette, then handed them the bread without educating them in a judgmental tone and I felt envious
I know it’s because she thinks the English are beyond saving but still it made me want to come back with a fake moustache and an English accent so I wouldn’t be expected to play bakery on expert mode just because I’m French. I asked for a pastry this time and the baker asked “no bread with that?” which felt cruel, like she wanted me to sprinkle myself with ashes and admit out loud that my level of bread proficiency isn’t as advanced as I once believed it was
The third time I went, I had lost all self-confidence and I hesitantly pointed at a bread and said “I’d like this, uh—what is it called?” and the baker looked at me in disbelief and said “That’s a baguette.”
God.
for the record, if that stupid bread had been flanked by a skinny bread (ficelle) and a fat one (flute) then yeah of course I would have known to call it a baguette, but in the absence of reference points I now felt lost and scared of being called a Parisian again
it’s hard to express the depth of my suffering so I’ll just let the facts speak for themselves: this morning a French person (me) stood in a French bakery in France surrounded by French people and pointed at a baguette and said “what is this called”
