BUT some of your conversations and comments on LLMs to me and others have had a distinct "attribution is going to be fucked in a post-LLM world, the best we can hope for is to preserve copyleft" vibe to it.

I would be hard pressed to find an example in our own comment history; as my toots self destruct after a few months. BUT it's definitely come up.

What's clear here to me, is how this new videogame development process is being framed.

If you watch the video, there isn't any actual sense that it's enabling a new generation of storytellers; it's not depicting a process that involves actual creative expression.

It's all framed as one attention economy dopamine roller coaster that can be mined of bite sized meme-able moments.

No one could watch this trailer and imagine someone might use this process to build a game that emotionally touches someone, or challenges someone. It reduces an actual art form, to jangling keys in front of a child to distract them.

The whole attitude is "To hell with art." Who cares if this slop might cannibalize actual creative expressions, with intent, meaning or narrative? #NeverAI #AntiAI #Videogames

Agreed, I think we're also seeing a lot of lack of leadership in FLOSS in general right now. Im sure FreeBSD would have an easier time with that, if OTHER bigger OS projects were holding the line too.

I suspect it's kinda a harder call for FreeBSD both because it's a larger project with many more contributors than ElementaryOS or NetBSD.

Honestly FreeBSD gets a lot of flack for "not being for desktops" but it was my daily driver for close to a year, before recently switching to ElementaryOS. It's got some rough spots for desktop use but It's software support is really within spitting distance of linux.

I just wish (A) they could get some agreement in the project, against AI.

AND (B) I kinda wish a desktop environment other than Elementary's OSes Pantheon DE would take a principled stand on AI. AND then get that packaged in FreeBSD ports.

FreeBSD's core team and developers seem unable to achieve consensus right now on slop.

OpenBSD's dictator for life has banned slop; except for a small handful of tiny commits that have slipped into base that no one talks about, and no one has an idea if they will continue.

NetBSD is on sure footing, but is even less tenable for my daily software needs than Haiku currently.

Any system where it's possible to double install gimp, is actually bizarre when you stop and think about it. Let's talk about how gnome+wayland with qt apps is a nightmare. Do to gnome's philosophy on window decorators versus KDEs and wayland's philosophy on compositors vs window managers you get this bizarre world where not only do you have to figure out some way to theme qt apps in a way which looks decent. BUT even if you do, they won't get drop shadows like gtk apps will under gnome. Which creates this issue finding the edges of one window vs another on overlapping windows; due to modern UX conventions.

AND yeah you can set an environmental variable to force qt apps to use the X11 renderer and rely on x11 backwards compatability, except it fucking breaks flatpak apps, unless you start going around and manually blessing each flatpak app to reach out to the X11 socket. However, that feels like it's really breaks flatpak's whole elevator pitch.

SO, with all the things I think the phone gets right (at least for me). I've been really startled by how many people in various circles have been really raging at the thing.

LIKE, I get it. The digital minimalism thing is a niche product category. Though, so is the C64 Ultimate?

AND yeah; it's kind of pricey compared to ACTUAL dumb phones. But it's not a dumb phone, and small runs of phones don't have the same economy of scale; and licensing that Android compatibility layer in SailfishOS isn't free. Plus the extra work Jolla has done to customize things has to be paid for. Etc, etc.

BUT it's coming in under a whole lot of other phones in this category.

IVE seen accusations its a scam, that it's just a cheap way of cashing in on the Commodore brand.

When folks talk about Android being "linux" they are usually talking about the kernel and other lowest levels of android.

Android uses the linux kernel. 4.9.x is an extremely old branch.

It has hit "End of Life" which means it is no longer getting security updates from linux developers, and they are no longer plugging security holes within it.

Some vendors may continue to patch it, and push updates to it on their own, to squash their own bugs or flaws they are noticing. However, this is very unlikely to be as comprehensive.

All modern operating systems can be thought of as a layer cake. The lower the level the closer it is to the "hardware". The kernel is in the lowest levels, & it's whole job is to talk to the hardware on your phone, and facilitate some of the software infrastructure needed by the layers above it.

User space is the upper levels, & it includes any applications you may be running. It also includes most of the visual things you interact with on a PC or a phone. When we talked about the launcher the other week, thats also part of user space.

A exploit, is a security vulnerability that an attacker can use to gain a foothold on your device. Usually if the exploit is with a piece of software that is "lower on the cake" it is more severe, & kernel level exploits are often the worst kind.

I believe GrapheneOS is cautioning you about a scenario where you may still receive security updates (AOSP user-space patches) to plug those security holes; but not any patches to the kernel or lower levels.

I often think of the free software definition as kind of post-scarcity philosophical definition of property rights.

Kind of in the tradition of other philosophical definitions of property, labor and value; but in a digital world where there is no resource scarcity.

From that point of view, the free software definition can be seen as the minimum prerequisites one needs to have in order for a recipient to truly own or possess a piece of software as property.

The problem is of course, while this is important foundational work. However, property rights are not the only ethical dimension of software. The FSF sometimes acknowledges this, which is why their work sometimes dips it's toes occasionally in other directions. (See their defective by design, anti-drm campaign.)

I am becoming convinced that at some-point we've fucked up #FLOSS as a community. It may have been a mistake to believe ethical computing's primary and chief emphasis should be compliance with the free software definition. When ethics in computing is such a multi variable problem in actuality.

I polled a bunch of folks on the fediverse about their feelings of LLM generated art a week or two back. AND most folks it reached seem to feel that the presence of generative AI contributions within a work; decreased the work's artistic value if not negating it completely.

A couple people (correctly in my opinion) criticized my poll for pointing out it might be artistically valid to use generative AI as part of a larger work critiquing generative AI.

THOUGH I think that last one is probably a pretty narrow usage, if one is looking for a broad "temperature reading".

There is a lot of software I use for work, I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot poll in my personal life. AND I definitely too dont enforce my choices on this stuff, onto my husband. NetBSD will likely support 32bit for longer (mips is still a tier-I architecture over there). But it still requires a 486 or better.

It's hard for me to express optimism about the #FSF's Librephone project. It strikes me like they're tackling the wrong end of the problem.

They have a complete FLOSS distro of Android under the GNU project already, called Replicant. It's basically stalled out because no modern phones meet it's freedom requirements.

AND any attempts by this Librephone project to reverse engineer all of the proprietary bits out of a modern phone, such that you could begin a modern Replicant.... will only be good for as long as that one single model of phone stays relevant?
