I had never heard of Magic Tree Farm, so I went looking and came across this interesting article that highlights the common prejudices against those "dirty hippies."

Alpha Farm in Oregon is still going. It started in 1972. It's an intentional community, not exactly a commune, but kinda similar in ways. Here's a nice look at what it is today and some of its history.

It's also in a re-forming stage. More info here: https://www.ic.org/directory/alpha-farm/

I joined #Mastodon a little over three years ago. After observing a lot of behavior on the site, I wrote the Toot linked below as a kind of response. It continues to get likes and shares even today. Currently, over 11,800 likes. I guess it struck a chord.

2025-06-21T00:55:06Z

More and more I'm feeling the need to unplug, to get off social media completely and off the Internet as much as is possible and still pay my bills, etc. I've been remembering life before the Internet and time spent having to use my brain more, time with fewer intentional distractions, time to myself, with others, with books, doing art, etc. I waste so much time and I think I'm getting dumber. I feel like I could use a good detox and resetting.

I love #Mastodon and I don't like the for-profit social media. However, I still have my old FB account which I visit maybe twice a year, and I haven't posted anything to it for many years. Still... I have a few friends on it and I'm thinking of hesitantly re-engaging there just a little so I can reconnect with some old friends. I know some here will say I should tell my friends to be here but that's highly unlikely to pan out, I mean just being honest.

I found this short video fascinating, especially when Marie-Louise von Franz (who is incredible btw) talks about the concept of a national shadow and how knowing one's personal shadow can help keep one from falling into a collective shadow. But the rest is great too.

We are in a time of massive election speculation. The social media channels I follow really like Harris' chances, but then I look at the MSM and it's much less certain, with Trump even leading in many polls.

My gut says Harris will win, but what do I know?

What do you think? What is your gut telling you? Add your comments too.

Please boost! Thanks!

I showed my 17 yr old the classic 1978 John Carpenter film, HALLOWEEN. She liked it. Of course she had questions, like why did the heroine not run away, why did she drop the knife, etc. I told it's the rules of the genre.

I was both surprised and not surprised at the slow pacing of the film. It's a slow burn compared to contemporary films. I also noticed there seemed to be a ton of phones ringing. A lot of the film seems to hinge on calls made and calls missed.

What is Gothic? The Historical and Philosophical Origins of Goth and Gothic Horror

This is an excellent video on the #Gothic and #horror as an #artform (broadly speaking) that arose out of a #philosophy, namely, Burke's concept of the "sublime."

I think we all need to take a deep breath and collectively decide that plays, movies, poetry, painting, and music can save the world. I'm not arguing that they do or will, just that we all ought to decide they do and act accordingly.

A great graphic from the 2022 lecture & documentary film by Nina Menkes, BRAINWASHED: CAMERA—SEX—POWER, showing the basic relationship between the assumed male viewer, the (typically male) director, the (typically male) director of photography, the male subject (character) and, finally, the female object. This is one way how pervasive cinematic shot design supports and enforces the objectification of women without us even realizing it's happening.

2022-11-26T15:37:42Z

If you enjoy someone's post on #Mastodon go ahead and click the star. If someone tells you that's meaningless because there's no #algorithm, ignore them. Sure, boost the post too if you want others to also see the post, but don't think telling someone you like what they posted is somehow unimportant. In real life I don't tell someone, "good job," or "well said," or "I love that," for the sake of some algorithm, I do it because I'm human and they are too. It's fundamental to being truly social.
