His prophecy is therefore not descriptive, but prescriptive, in that he is proposing a certain course of action. People who listen to that prophecy and act as if it were true, say, by buying the Al for fear of missing out, might think that what they are doing is getting ahead of the curve, but what they are actually doing is akin to obeying an order.

‘"Anticipatory obedience is a political tragedy," writes the historian Timothy Snyder. It's his first lesson in resisting tyranny. Obeying in advance means adapting to a situation instinctively, unreflectively, before you receive explicit orders. An analysis of predictions as speech acts partly explains why and how we tend to acquiesce to authoritarian leaders: by believing and acting in accordance with their predictions. We don't even notice were obeying. Perhaps because the structure of sentences that express predictions is so similar to those that describe the world, if we are not mindful, our psychology tends to accept other people's visions as inevitable truths that are on their way to materializing.’

We are not justified in assuming that the future will be like the past. Sextus Empiricus is a precursor of this idea, writing in his Outlines of Pyrrhonism that if we focus on specific instances, "some of the particulars omitted in the induction may contravene the universal," while reviewing all of the particulars is "impossible, since the particulars are infinite"; therefore, "induction is invalidated." That is, it occurred to Sextus and Hume that we might be turkeys.”

If we can't see the ball, Bayesian thinking can achieve very impressive results. But when we can just turn around and see the ball, when we can consult a library to see which books an author has written, when we can look up legal cases to find precedents, then probabilistic answers short of citing trustworthy sources are not the gold standard.”

And yet this is the most common use for language models. And whenever I’ve brought it up I’ve been treated as just an ignorant woman that can’t see what the future is bringing. This timeline is so fucking stupid

Let me fix it: “Genre fiction is simplified, custom designed to affect us in a particular way, while literary fiction is messy and unwieldy, hard to appreciate in all its richness.” Pretty sure Véliz would agree with this version (even if it missed the point)

Without knowledge of the size of the population and the resources being produced, large-scale military coordination and taxation were unfeasible.”

The idea of normal people killed the suspension of judgment when contemplating human beings. People who had been individuals with a name suddenly became tokens belonging to a type category. And if the label didn't fit well, the system beat up people into a square until they fit the box. People who had been just themselves became normal or deviant, typical or outliers, mediocre or extraordinary. Galton and his ilk killed the idiosyncratic person. Centuries later, predictive algorithms would inherit these faults, creating social order out of ambiguity and harming those at the margins”

Of those, only around 4,000 end up in the Crown Prosecution Service, only about 2,000 stand trial, and only about 1,000 or fewer end up in conviction. 2 That makes the impunity rate for rape around 99.8 percent. By having an almost perfect impunity rate, countries like the U.K. have effectively decriminalized rape.”

Just random data, no comments

Being a mathematician, he calculated that he would die on the day when his sleep reached twenty-four hours, on November 27, 1754. And on that very day he died, as predicted. Unfortunately, this story is likely apocryphal. It's worth noting it, however, because it shows how gullible we are to those who seem to know more than we do. Magical thinking sprouts in the face of impressive mathematical discoveries and proofs.”

A question by someone who knows nothing about operating systems and is very anxious so is having stupid thoughts: can’t drivers be abstracted away so they don’t have to be rewritten again? I’m imagining a micro kernel could load a driver that exposes an API but it’s not tied to an specific OS. How dumb is this and way?

But before I started to learn Haskell any code using higher order functions was overly confusing for me.

I been rejecting any attempt to make languages easier to learn or more familiar based on how my own experience. Learning is uncomfortable and takes time. There’s no shortcut. If you wanna help beginners don’t be an asshole when they ask stuff. That’s 100 better than adding braces to an ML language (yes I’m still mad at ReasonML)

That doesn't mean you need to spend more time studying; it means you should study at more spaced-out intervals. […] This is, of course, in stark contrast with formal education, where we try to cram all the knowledge into one semester, or with bootcamps that seek to educate people in three months.”

The results of this study indicate that gaining knowledge about design patterns, which is likely going to improve your chunking ability, helps you process code faster. You can also see in the graphs that there is a difference in effect for different design patterns: the decrease in time is bigger for the observer pattern than for the decorator pattern.”

I have no idea what the decorator pattern is, but I’m a fan of the observer and i sprinkle it everywhere whenever I can.

A tangent: I think this the magic of functional programming: you have some well defined concepts that you can mix and match. It’s hard to learn them because they are unfamiliar, not because they are difficult, but once you do, it’s easier to reason about stuff that uses them

The question is if what I consider pretty/understandable is the same as other programmers would call pretty/understandable
