Professional illustrators will tell you that GenAI images are awful. Professional writers will tell you that GenAI text is awful. It's good enough that it can sometimes fool an amateur who doesn't understand what they're looking at; but if you learn the signs and practice a bit, even an amateur can develop a pretty good sense for when something was AI-generated.

And images and text are what GenAI is *best* at. If you look at things that it hasn't been optimized for, like voice acting or writing recipes, it's just complete garbage. When Amazon released an anime episode with an AI-generated dub a while back, they almost *immediately* took it down due to the backlash, because you didn't need to know a single thing about voice acting to listen to it and tell that it was completely unnatural.

That's why it really drives me up the wall that this *isn't* true in programming. I don't mean that the quality of GenAI code is good; I mean that most programmers can't tell and don't seem to care. I've seen multiple surveys indicating that a majority of programmers use GenAI tools now--as high as 80%, depending on where you look--and it boggles my mind that so many use it when the quality of the output is, to me, obviously *bad*. The code these tools generate is undocumented or poorly documented, is filled with errors, and don't follow whatever your style guide is. Maybe it's faster than it would have been to write it by hand, but by the time you've understood, tested, and fixed the code, you haven't actually saved any time. The only thing you've done is deprived yourself of solving a problem, which is how you improve!

Maybe I'm in a weird place because AI is particularly unsuited for the kind of work I do. I do a lot of stuff like integrating new sensors with custom hardware platforms using private APIs, which GenAI can't do at all because there are no examples it can plagiarize. I see people saying all the time that it's good for repetitive tasks like setting up new projects or writing boilerplate code... but I don't really get that, because those kinds of things were already automated by good IDEs. Templates have been around for decades!

But coders just love this slop. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because to me, it's obvious that this stuff is not actually making you any faster but is making you a worse programmer, and they just cannot get enough of it. Just the other week, I was on a call with a client who said something like, "Wow, all this AI stuff sure is making you guys a lot faster!" after I had finished a project, and I'm just like, "Haha, yeah, sure" because my secret is that I haven't gotten faster; everybody else has gotten *worse*.

What is wrong with this industry? 2025-12-21T16:13:48Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqswsvyxpu6f2spgf4sfwz2e0sktuvmk83uwwpnzhhw0vx5pggt3adqzyzmhazdkkdxk9sg76e374jjeq2jp4ucq3lxa2y2ju70xqdgx2e3uv3dc4py Happy #FoxgirlFriday!
