So, MIL took a fall yesterday afternoon and was taken to our local hospital by ambulance. X-rays showed that she had broken off the head of her femur, so another ambulance ride, this time to Canberra. Of course, there were no beds available, so she was kept in ER overnight and was scheduled for surgery early this morning so that they can put a metal pin into the bone.

The aged care reforms aimed at people staying in their own homes sound great BUT:

- Where do the growing numbers of elderly (particularly single women) who don't own a house go? Most aged care facilities [don't call it a home, because they are more like factory farms] have very limited numbers of "concessional places" that will take 85% of the resident's age pension to pay for their room and board [but no luxury items, such as access to wifi, or wine with dinner, or even newspapers!]
- Anywhere outside the most metropolitan areas, home services providers are scarce as hens' teeth [what the government coyly describes as "a thin market". Just 60Km from the Federal Parliament, my in-laws cannot find anybody to do their lawns, or clean the house or do personal services. And when they approach a larger company, they are not interested because going through the age care system means it takes forever for them to get paid. So what do my in-laws do?

I will argue forever that the whole commercial age care system is rotten to the core and needs to be taken over totally by the government

My father, George, died almost twenty years ago. He wasn’t a man to make much of an impression, so it if feels odd that it has taken me this long to finally understand the shape of him. The reason for this is that it is only recently that my daughter and I worked out that he suffered from autism. Of course, that was not something that was understood when George was growing up.

George was born in Latin America. It was a large, wealthy and mostly happy family. Intelligent, but not academically inclined, he only got seven years of education. He was happiest working in the family’s cattle stations.
By his mid-thirties, he was back in the city. He worked in an office for half the day and flew his beloved aeroplane for the other half. We’ve never been able to identify even one friend. He was a loner and happy with his life. Alas, society’s expectation meant that he had to marry. Enter my mother (stage left).

Elena was born into a poor, dysfunctional family. Alcohol and poverty meant that she spent much of her childhood living with cousins, as her parents’ lives fell apart. She met my father in the office.

Elena saw that George had what she most wanted, a wealthy happy family. So, she set her sights on entrapping him. They were married the following year. Her first command was that it was “the aeroplane or her”, so George sold his beloved Aeronca. That set the dynamic for their marriage.

I never understood how other boys related to their fathers. Mine was just a figure in the background. He read and he fixed things, but did not interact much with my brothers or me.

It was in the late seventies that I had the one and only conversation with my father that I remember. We were in the backyard of their home having a barbeque. He and I were sitting in the sun after lunch, talking about the future. He then told me that he only wanted to live long enough for my youngest brother to turn sixteen and be able to look after himself. After that, he was happy to die. I have often thought about his words, and the decades of misery that those words carried as baggage. Divorce was not an option, and so he wished for death as a way to escape my mother and his Sisyphean life.

In a way, he got his wish. Soon after my youngest brother left home, George started showing signs of dementia. He lived until the age of 82, but by the end he did not recognise me. He found escape from his pain, and from my mother in the foggy recesses of his own mind.

I don’t know how things would have been different if his neurodivergence was understood when he was growing up, but I think his life would have been different and much happier.

It’s difficult to mourn a man one did not know, but at least I now understand him a bit better.

During the week I attended the funeral of the mother of a close friend of mine. Drove 250km to be there for him at a deeply important time. The drive there and back, through windy and not-well kept country roads gave me time to think about death and funerals (I know, quite morbid).
I have now attended funerals in three continents, and across some cultural divides and, frankly, I don’t think the modern funeral serves us well as either individuals or as a people.
Admittedly, as a non-believer, I miss out on whatever religious people get out of funerals, but even they seem to nowadays go about it in standardised platitudes. It seems that powerpoints of their photos of their life are now a standard, along with a short eulogy that barely rises above a litany of significant dates. All of it accompanied by music that might have been important for the deceased, but never contextualised for those attending the event. In all of this, I am as guilty as anyone else, for that was the structure of the funeral for each of my parents. Now, I don’t think it is anywhere enough.

A human being has died. Their contribution to this world has ended and they merit a proper acknowledgement and reckoning of both their virtues and their shortcomings. There is no judge in some imagined afterlife, so there is only us, present on that solemn day, to remember them and see them for one last time as complete people. Not just as others saw them, but as they saw themselves.

An American writer, Andrew Scott Card, once came up with the concept of the Speaker for the Dead. The role would take sufficient time to learn all there was to learn about a dead person, and then tell their story with both good and bad sides – not hagiography but history. Maybe speak it from the voice of they who have died, maybe not. But regardless, complete, fair and humane.

The death industry has become a money-hungry machine that processes bodies while giving those left behind very little real opportunity to grieve, to mourn, and to reflect. It is all just not good enough.
