👏 Thanks to #education researchers who:

(a) test actual performance (not just self- or assessor-ratings),
(b) both before and after the intervention, and
(c) compare the performances changes to a suitable control group.

Without these, it's impossible to determine if performance really improved or whether it was caused by the intervention.

And when you do all three you often find no effect. Many of those people do not even need the retirement welfare (because they make more than enough while working).

So we may not actually disagree. 😬 U.S. retirees don't get a fair share of #SocialSecurity, etc.—"for #Medicare [they get] TRIPLE what they paid in."

Jessica Riedl adds, "the math doesn’t work": https://freakonomics.com/podcast/ten-myths-about-the-u-s-tax-system

And the #USA spends more on #retirement welfare recipients of these programs than on any other federal budget item! So these may be the lowest-hanging fruits in terms of fiscal #policy.

Given these are probably third rail issues, how can we actually right-size retirement welfare programs to get the U.S. #budget back on track?

Is there a way to make retirement reform a winning issue without votes from aging #welfare kings and queens?

https://www.wsj.com/personal-finance/retirement/us-retirement-policy-c096c078
