A while back I was talking to someone about whether it was possible to set up your own GSM cell tower for 2G connectivity to try to revive old feature phones now that 2G is dead in many parts of the world. The idea would be to have something that would broadcast on the GSM wavelengths and communicate with the phone, then have it act as a proxy to allow for browsing the internet and sending SMS or making phone calls, which would be proxied to some kind of Internet service.

Of course, just broadcasting a tower on the GSM spectrum is highly illegal because of how it can cause surrounding phones that still listen in on old 2G networks to connect to that and mess up emergency services and whatever else.

However this would still be really interesting to do in a controlled environment where it won't leak signals into the background. Supposedly there are SDRs that can broadcast on GSM frequencies, and apparently you can target it such that you basically wire it up to the RF receiver on the phone, though I'm not sure where that is on my phone and I assume I'd need to disassemble it to get to it.

What's the best way to go about testing a graphical program on big endian? (i.e. silly stuff like running a headless test suite on a Wii won't work, would need a proper Linux desktop environment) Would it be to emulate some Linux in QEMU, and which big endian architecture would be the least slowest to get running - I know there are both old PPC versions that are big endian as well as s390x. Supposedly ARM can operate in big endian mode which seems interesting if that were to be possible on regular Android phones (like virtualisation) but seems extremely unlikely.

I'm considering sending emails to local MEPs regarding the EU KIDS act, in the position of me as the Principia maintainer (in charge of both the game and the community website). I haven't managed to fully grasp what the proposal entails for me, but from what I can gather I would need to do the following:

- Implement a more reliable age verification system than a mere birthdate input field, with unknown ongoing costs.
- Either gate off all the game's online features (including playing levels? I'm not sure if they can be cleanly separated from the rest of the community) for 18+ OR implement different safety systems for <13, 13-15 and 16-17 age groups.
- Implement various safety features, I suppose it should be possible to disable comments on levels, profiles, default level visibility, DM controls, whether your last online status should be visible or not... This point is fair enough, but some features I thought of would probably mean large architectural changes for more granular visibility control - typically content is either always visible, or it is in a locked or deleted state where it is only visible to staff. We have no algorithmic feeds other than complete randomness on the Random Picks page, or any other kind of functionality I specifically implemented to provide harm.
- For <15 this would mean implementing a guardian-child account relationship system and allowing the guardian to set limitations for the child's account, such as the previously mentioned safety features.
- This parental controls system would also include setting screentime limits for the child's game from the guardian account, which would assumedly need the client to phone home to the server to make this work.

This does not even get into the fact that the client can be pointed to another community site by design and any monitoring features such as screen time implemented in the client can be ripped out by a fork.

Small and micro enterprises are explicitly not exempt, as Principia may equally provide harms to minors as, say, Roblox may do. The lack of proportionality is absurd.

#foss #opensource #gaming #eu #eukidsact

Was reminded of Reticulum again today and was a bit disappointed to hear that the maintainer seems to have completely gone off the deep end.

It's a really interesting idea - a decentralised mesh network that can work over all kinds of communication methods, including radio for establishing long-range communication between two parties without relying on any existing internet/mobile infrastructure. Then if you have more nodes in the network you can traverse longer distances by hopping between each node that's within range.

I wish I had the radio equipment to actually use it to its greatest extent.

Last night I had a dream that Microsoft pushed out a Windows update to "improve localisation" that (accidentally?) added more drive letters in latin languages with more letters that appear after Z in the collation order, but only if the system is set to that language!

So I went onto dreamy YouTube and watched a video about someone setting their system language to Swedish, then plugging in flash drives into a big tree of USB hubs until drives assigned to Å:\, Ä:\ and Ö:\ appeared in Explorer.

The blog post is now live. Trying out Claude's C Compiler, a vibe coded #AI slop #C compiler consisting of 180k lines of #Rust code. I compiled a simple Hello World program, my puzzle game Tensy, #ClassiCube and finally the #Linux kernel using it, getting a bare minimum RISC-V Linux environment running in QEMU. Also a brief mention of #slimcc at the end, another small C compiler.

It ended up being yet another really long blog post, so I hope I didn't forget anything.

https://voxelmanip.se/2026/02/06/trying-out-claudes-c-compiler/

#blog

Back in autumn of 2020 we had an school assignment to edit #Wikipedia. We were then going to follow what would happen with that edit for a couple days.

Some didn't have enough understanding of what goes into an edit, and got it quickly rolled back either by bots or by humans (and our school's IP very quickly got blocked as they usually end up being on Wikipedia, for those who weren't making the edits at home). I of course knew a bit more and made a good edit to a page adding some info with the necessary references attached to it.

But one classmate of mine had another idea. What if, we embed a little bit of a hoax in an existing page, add some tangentially related references from credible sources to disguise it, and see how long it will last? Our teacher and us two would end up speculating on how long it would stay up before someone took notice.

It ended up surviving the first weeks where it would have been scrutinised by bots and humans lurking the Recent Changes page. And after that point it seems like it would end up remaining there.

We then graduated in 2023 and the edit was still there at that point. Fast forward to today and it is still there, 5 years later...

...Uh, maybe it's time to say something about it by now? I probably should.
