I remember when it was the future (and I never fully understood what it did). 2026-07-21T15:34:55Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqsprarvyrvc94uacc0l4w72frmlf9c2856ty6qvgxcxevhhmt5xpvqzyzt0zymmmq5crepxmp7dht8u4dwcnvphhzyjyqz6m3jtpz93hcdek537zp3 In reply to nevent1q…skg2
_________________________

Parenting is HARD.

Sure, they should be experts on online safety. And food safety. And sexual education. And what movies are suitable. And books. And friends. And schools. And..

I hope you get my point. Take any one of these things in isolation, it's easy to say that it should be the parents' responsibility. But add them all together and it's clear that parents can't cope.

I totally understand the fears with the law, but leaving it to parents isn't the answer.

Cait the Proud Trans Woman (npub1nlv…udqj) 2025-08-03T22:55:45Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqsv23xzvu7u9mnke7nctgkmnkmtd209z7j6lzxd2z7tam9ll0n0e8gzyzt0zymmmq5crepxmp7dht8u4dwcnvphhzyjyqz6m3jtpz93hcdek7d5vzs I've seen a lot of negative commentary about the UK Online Safety Act, and the recent age-gating that has come into force.

I suspect that a lot of this is coming from Americans who bridle at anything that impinges on their freedom - gun laws, seatbelts, vaccine mandates. (Low blow, I know. Their attitude is right for their society.)

On balance, I support age-gating. It's not perfect, but what is? And age-detection technology is going to get better and better. 2025-08-03T19:23:32Z
