I learned last night that there was an Iron Man movie that not only had Guy Pierce as a villain who could breathe fire, but also Ben Kingsley as a drunken actor who was pretending to be a villain.

It's weird to me that I had never heard of this until now. Those Marvel movies take up so much space in culture that even if you haven't seen them, it's hard to not hear about them.

Somehow I entirely missed this one. It feels like a Mandela Effect situation. Did I just fall into a universe with an Iron Man 3 from one that didn't have one?

I was interviewed a couple weeks ago by a grad student working on a paper about attitudes towards AI in the maker/creative communities. We had a good long discussion and in talking, we realized the divide between pro-AI people and anti-AI people mostly comes down to whether people value the process or the product.

My friend only values the product, so she doesn't understand why someone would want to spend time on the process.

Had dinner with a friend last night who is moving from Salt Lake City to LA to join a startup. Over dinner she told me that the startup intends to buy a massive US corporation. She's confident that's going to happen.

I was skeptical that was going to be possible to begin with. Then she told me their CEO used AI to design some major parts of their plan, and that the company's engineers are looking at what they're supposed to build and saying it doesn't make any sense.

I work in PR for a university, and for most of my time here, it's been about promoting cool and interesting research taking place on campus.

But in the last year or so, it seems like almost everyone at all levels of management has caught hype psychosis. Anything that mentions quantum or AI is the most important and critical thing. We have to stop doing whatever else we're doing and promote the latest thing that has some connection to quantum or AI, no matter how transparently dumb or craven it is.

I had a strange email in my work inbox this morning.

The vice president of an investment firm that invests in "manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, truck, rail, appliance, power generation, mining, oil and gas, packaging, pulp and paper, medical equipment, etc" emailed me to tell me about a new musical tribute honoring Nancy Grace Roman.

This vice president told me that the video and composition premiered at Goddard space flight center before the launch of the rocket carrying the telescope. She told me I could download the video and share it on my organization's social media platforms.

Left unexplained in her email was why the vice president of an investment firm was sending me an email like that.

I found the video on youtube without clicking on her tracking links. The youtube channel's icon was the logo of the investment firm, but the song was attributed to some guy.

Who was this guy? I went looking. A poet laureate of the Explorer's Club (hadn't heard of it before), and member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission and the Bretton Woods Committee. Odd.

I searched his name along with the name of the investment firm to see if they had sponsored his work in some way.

Nope. He's the chairman of their board of directors. The chairman of the board of directors of an investment company is making the company's vice president of communications spam people with his song to get them to share it.

Dreamt one of those dreams that never seems to end, even after you briefly wake up more than once.

I was in a facility that manufactured milkshake machines for restaurants, and while testing settings while repairing some machines, the technicians invadvertedly created a milkshake containing a virus that caused spider webs to come out of people nipples.

Then they accidentally created a virus that made people tall, and another that made people into tall zombies. (the little LCD screen on the milkshake machine told them this).

What they didn't realize was that the machine they were working on was connected to their server, and since they had administrator access, the changes were being treated as software updates, and shake machines in restaurants and coffee shops across the country were making viruses for tallness, zombiefication, and spider-silk nipples without anyone knowing it.

I've learned something new about the community theater economy.

Increasingly, theaters seem to be using projections, in place of sets. These are basically just stock images that you download from the internet.

A theater that wants to use projections just needs to put up a scrim (a kind of translucent cloth) and project these images onto it.

I had a planning meeting with the director and producer for our next show last night, and they got to talking about the projections they want to use and how expensive they are. The director complained that she was already blowing through part of her budget just because of the projections.

"How expensive could these things be?" I wondered. I asked them for the website they are getting these things from.

They gave it to me and I took a look. These projections are anywhere from $75-150 apiece! And most of them just shitty stock images. A lot of them are things I could find Creative Commons equivalents for. And a lot of them are even AI generated.

I told them to hold off on buying any projections yet and to show me the ones they are interested in. I'm confident I can get or make us usable replacements for free.

I am a set builder, so I don't like projections anyway. I think it's a lazy way to do a show, but now that I know they are such a rip-off, I am really against them.

To make matters worse, the publishers that license the rights to produce shows are starting to push these projections as part of their licensing packages.

What a scam.

One of our local public radio stations gave such a softball interview to a woman advocating putting AI into smart houses that will do all the drudgery for you.

One of her examples of how great AI was focused on automatically turning on lights when it gets dark.

If you just use a timer to turn your lights on at 7 pm, some times of the year, they will come on while the sun is still up, and other times of the year, they won't come on until well after dark, she said. AI can tell when it's actually getting dark and turn your lights on then, she said.

Another one of her examples was refrigerator maintenance. Imagine if a part of your refrigerator needs to be serviced every six weeks, she said. You would have to remember to do that. Or you can have the AI remind you to service it every six weeks she said.

I guess this lady has never heard of light sensors or calendars. It seemed like the host of the program hadn't either, because she was also excited that AI could take care of both of these problems for us.

Dreamt i was lying in a gutter next to a street and reading Inherent Vice because a friend told me that was the best way to experience the book.

So there i was, in between the asphalt and the grass of someone's yard, with a pillow propping my head up and reading when David Foster Wallace walked up. In my dream he was the author of Inherent Vice (it seems my dreams can't tell Internet Vice from Infinite Jest). Besides being still alive, David Foster Wallace was also groomed like a JD Vance, with short, combed hair, a goatee, and wearing a suit.

I remember when hamburger buns came in only one type that was equally bad, but then new offerings came along. The same hasn't happened for hot dogs.

I know what you're going to say: "What about french rolls?" or "My grocery store has hoagie rolls." I've anticipated this, and before you say it, let me tell you that you are wrong.

A french roll or a hoagie roll is not a better hot dog bun. It's a sandwich roll. It's size and density necessitates a lot of fillings to balance it out. A hot dog isn't enough and it's overwhelmed by that much bread.

So, why don't grocery stories carry something more substantial than a wonder bread hot dog bun but less massive than a french roll? bratwursts and the like cry out for a worthy partner!

Dreamt that I learned my family had roots in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and that sometime in the 19th Century, one of my ancestors had discovered a never-before-seen material in a mine that he had used to create the world's first transistor, but in a way completely different from the way modern transistors work. None of this had been recorded in the history books. It had been completely forgotten by the world.

In reading his papers, I learned that he had also used this mystery material, which had some mystical properties, to create a machine that granted wishes.

Somehow I managed to locate this machine. It looked very 19th century, being a mess of wood, brass, and various mechanisms, along with some of these long-lost transistors he had invented.

I thought the machine might be dangerous to use — wishes granted in stories rarely seem to turn out the way the wishers want them to — so I just set it aside for safe keeping. I made the mistake, however, of telling a woman I knew about it, and while I was gone one day, she came over and used the machine.

She was clever, and rather than wishing for just any old wish, she wished for the machine to make her a machine like itself that she could use for making her own wishes.

The machine complied, and she had her very own wishing machine, albeit of somewhat worse quality than the original. Her machine granted wishes, but they were all slightly off from what had been asked for.

I told her we needed to destroy her machine before it caused trouble, but she became angry and refused. She left with her machine.

Some days later, she came by with a friend of hers. Her friend also had a wishing machine, and it was of even worse quality than hers. She had let her friend use her machine to wish for the same thing she had wished for, and now her friend had something like the photocopy of a photocopy.

They told me that they had let other people wish for wishing machines as well, and now those people were letting people make wishes in turn. Soon everyone would be getting a wishing machine, each worse than the last, and each granting wishes that were further and further from what the wisher asked for.

I didn't know where this would all lead, but I had a feeling it wouldn't be good.

In English we have the word "with." In German they use "mit." Really basic words are usually retained the longest as languages evolve, so I got to wondering why our two words for the same concept are so different.

And in looking it up, I learned that English used to use "mid" in place of with, and that it has been retained in exactly one case -- midwife -- meaning "with wife," as in the person who is with the wife while she's giving birth.
