I was discussing the state of the UK with someone this afternoon. They lamented the influx of muslims into a country where they didn’t belong, and how this was changing the climate of the country. The immediate context was the election of a new (atheist) Green MP who only won by pandering to these outsiders.

What I would like to have said to this guest was that this was a surprising argument for a white Christian Englishman to make, given that what they saw as the endangered white Christian civilisation was itself an import from the Middle East. Shouldn’t they be defending the Druids? Painting themselves with woad? Speaking Norse?

What they believe of course is that normative UK culture is the precise cultural stew that made *them* a few decades ago. But the UK has always changed, and it didn’t stop changing in 1960.

If you embrace change, you’ll get a relationship. If you fight change, you’ll get a war. So it goes.

Roading projects are expensive and take years. Public transport can be scaled up in weeks or months. Active transport networks are cheaper and quicker to construct than roads.
It's a no-brainer, but unfortunately Aotearoa has a VERY small-minded minister of transport whose party is in hock to the car and trucking lobbies.
