In the constellation Canes Venatici, we can see two spiral galaxies in an edge-on view. Both of these have distorted shapes and are called Whale galaxy (NGC 4631) and Hockey stick galaxy (NGC 4656). The interactions of these galaxies with each other and other galaxies in the area are the reasons for their unusual shapes. At 25 million light years away, they are part of the Virgo supercluster.

Feeling bummed that I forgot to bring my eclipse glasses to work today as a partial eclipse (10%) will be seen around 2 pm. Then I remembered that nothing is quite like the total eclipse that I experienced in 2024 - not even 95% is as good as total. So, it is OK to miss one with 10% coverage.

My son and I went hiking in the White Mountains. Starting from the Cog rail parking lot, we went up on Jewell trail that connects to Gulfside trail. First we took a left turn to head to the top of Mount Jefferson, turned around and took Gulfside all the way to Mount Washington. It was a long and hard hike but I am glad we were able to finish what we had planned. The weather was perfect - partly cloudy with temperatures around 60F.

If anyone is following this thread and planning a trip to San Sebastián, I’d highly recommend these pintxos bars:

Bar Borda Berri
La Cuchara San Telmo

That said, we didn’t have a bad experience in any one of the ones that we visited. There were some on our list that we didn’t go to because they were closed for vacation.

Don’t know if it will happen but San Sebastián is one of the places I’d like to go back to. It was a fantastic trip.

The last pintxos bar of our trip was La Cuchara San Telmo. This is a newer establishment and seems to be very popular. It always had a line in front of it so we kept avoiding it. Turned out to be a good place. We had grilled octopus, fois gras and grilled goat cheese.

On the following day, more pintxos for lunch time. First stop at Sirimiri (which means light rain in Basque). We had a plate of anchovies and a nice eggplant and peppers on bread kind of pintxo. Probably the only non-meat containing item and I didn’t take a photo. 🙄

Six months-long exposure taken using a pinhole camera containing photographic paper. It tracked the Sun’s movement in the sky from winter to summer solstice. Each curve shows one day and stretches of cloudy days can be seen as dark patches.

The camera was installed on my mailbox post and it stayed out there for the whole duration. I am glad that the duct tape survived the snow, ice and cold of winter.

I like this desaturated b/w version of the image as well.
