I have just been informed by Dayjob that my position is being eliminated. They aren't punting me out the door immediately, they're at least giving me 60 days' notice, but they are nonetheless punting me out the door.

So joy oh glee, I get to go back on the job market. 😩 And try to find whatever few positions may remain in tech that a) involve as little AI bullshit as possible, b) will let me work remote, and c) are actually willing to hire a worker within shouting distance of 60.

Three things I'd like to call out about this Seattle Times article:

1. Way to go, WA, sue him!

2. It is incredibly fucking hypocritical to bloviate about vote-by-mail being an avenue for fraud when you yourself, in fact, _vote by mail_. But what else is new when it comes to the orange shitgibbon?

3. What I DO see as new here is the article using this phrasing: "Trump has repeatedly lied about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election".

The same sentence then says "falsely claimed", which dampens the impact. BUT STILL. More journalists need to say "Trump has repeatedly lied". Call it what it IS.

"Oh, but they're unobtrusive, you don't have to use the features if you don't want them" isn't good enough. My baseline is "I don't want that crap in programs I use AT ALL". Period. Full stop.

So I will for the foreseeable future remain on Calibre 8.10, the last known version to have no AI features in it whatsoever. And if an AI-free competitor eventually shows up, I am prepared to transfer my ebooks into a new manager if I have to.

Am I extremely fucking salty about this? YES I AM. Because, again: THIS TECHNOLOGY STOLE MY WORK and that of countless other creatives all over the world. And it's insulting and infuriating to me to see it creeping into each and every corner of my daily computer use no matter how much I DO NOT WANT IT. /End

I am an author. I've released work with Carina Press, and I've released work on my own. My released work is on record as HAVING BEEN STOLEN BY OPENAI, and I am in fact one of the many, many authors who've had to file claims on the settlement with Anthropic.

So I am not kidding when I say I don't want that technology, technology which HAS STOLEN FROM ME, anywhere near a program I use. ESPECIALLY the program I've used to not only manage my ebook library, but even perform format conversions on my work to prep it for sale. /1

I see a lot of pointing and laughing at the brouhaha between Musk and Ramaswamy, and the MAGA crowd who's pissed off at them for the whole H1B thing, and claiming America doesn't have enough engineers.

But here's the thing. Musk had a whole helluva lot of engineers when he bought Twitter. He decimated his own workforce.

Every other tech CEO looked at that, went "HEY THAT LOOKS PROFITABLE," and chucked a bunch of their own engineers out the door, too.

The tech job market is STILL reeling from this.

So I call bullshit on the whole "America doesn't have enough engineers" claim. What they really mean is, there's a shortage of engineers they can get away with paying shit wages.

Despite us asking for personnel to mask around us, the technician who was going to run my wife's MRI today _flat out refused_ to mask up in our presence. And was actively hostile and confrontational when I told him that as my wife's advocate, I had to insist. He sneered at us, "Why should I mask?"

BECAUSE A HEALTH-COMPROMISED PATIENT ASKED YOU TO, MOTHERFUCKER.

He refused. So we bailed on the appointment.

I've been seeing a bunch of positive things about Tim Walz on my feeds today, now that Harris has tapped him as her running mate. But I wasn't terribly familiar with him, so I went and looked at this Politico roundup of stuff about him. And this one stood out for me:
