Time for moar goodies from China.

Here's Fanta Jasmine Peach. I've already found several peach variants from different continents, but this one adds jasmine into the mix.

It has a really strong sweet smell of something peach-y, not sure what jasmine is supposed to smell like but I can only guess that's it.

It's one of the funny things that tastes like it smells. Again the peach and then that aftertaste that reminds me of tea.

These Asian Fantas never disappoint and here's one more I'm glad to have found!

Now this was an interesting find. After the cherry 7up I wondered if there were other weird 7up variants out there and sure enough, here's 7up Mandarin-Orange.

Again as with the alternative 7up/Sprite flavors, I don't know if there's much 7up's original flavor in it, but the mandarin and orange are very strong and it's actually pretty good. As this is an US import, it has high-fructose corn syrup in it, but I'll take that over all the no sugar sweeteners that make everything taste like ass in a bad way.

From what I learned on the web, this is a limited edition flavor.

Today's couple of drinks in project was to take WhoDunnit's old, failed slot reel stepper motor apart to see if it was recoverable for a spare.

The original symptoms were extreme heat when powered up (closer to 90°C!) and strong, crunchy mechanical resistance when manually turned without power. A stepper should move with very little resistance when there's no power to it.

The initial examination shows the bearings being just fine, but the rotors look shot. There's material missing and they're full of large metal shavings.

I look inside the chassis and the stators are in the same condition. Sorry, but this one's FUBAR.

Bad bearings would still be a recoverable condition, but even if the metal filings were removed, this one will never work right. The tolerance between the rotors and stators is very small and it seems even a small change ruins its behavior.

I wonder how this exact failure mode happens. Does the strong magnet in rotors first collect smaller metal debris, until it starts chopping away pieces from the stators until it seizes? Fortunately generic ones work in pinball machines just fine so it's a matter of wiring.

Back in the days when I was exploring Germany, I learned that the locals had a thing for orange soda + cola mixes. I had not ever thought about combining those two and was surprised just how good but weird combo that was. Every big soda company had their take on it, even the Coca-Cola company had their Fanta-Coke mix called Mezzo Mix. Everyone seemed to call this mix Spezi.

Here's Krombacher Spezi. It tastes just like what it says on the can and it's very good. It's made of actual OJ and the brand's cola drink, pure sugar with no BS added to it.

Spezi is Germany's gift to the world of #soda.

They've been exactly what you see in this pin for ages now, at least from the 80s, maybe even longer. Williams also had a slots department at the time this game was made and I'm pretty sure they borrowed the slots mechanism from a real slot machine.

And you're right, the reels are just for the show, the result has been long since determined by the RNG (with some nudging towards winning less, depending on the area and laws) before the reels even start spinning. This enables the game to keep logs for what has happened, which again the regulators want to see.

Mechanically this is very different to the old time slot machines that had very complex system of spinning discs with holes in them to determine purely mechanically if there was a winning combo of symbols on the reels.

And funnily enough, this pin has a compensation mode where if the slot mechanism fails, you can still see the outcome on the display, but it's kinda cool looking gimmick and integrated pretty well in the gameplay.

With the WhoDunnit's slot reel motor being my main suspect, I pull the whole slot machine assembly off the machine for closer look.

As it's on my desk, it's very clear just how hosed the old motor is. Without power, the steppers here should spin freely. This bad one barely moves and feels all crunchy inside. Most likely its bearings are FUBAR.

So here's a sped of version of the half an hour it took to replace whole thing. The slot machine assembly has 3 identical reel sub-assemblies in it. They come off with four screws, after which the reel has to be separated from the motor and finally the motor from the support bracket.

As this is just a generic stepper motor, I need to make a connector that fits the pin's stepper driver board. Fortunately that's just 4x 0.156" Molex KK pins and then vacating the old housing and stuffing these new ones in.

The reel test shows the new motor running as expected with no extra noises or other apparent issues. As I return to the attraction mode, the machine does a self-test on the reels, homing stopping them at bar-multiball-clue. For the owners of this game it's an easy way to verify it works.

WhoDunnit (Bally, 1995) developed an issue where the under the playfield slot machine's leftmost reel started to stutter and eventually completely die about after 10 minutes since power on.

From a technical side this is pretty much like any modern slot machine, which probably stems from the fact that Williams was also in slot machine business at the time. The reel is driven with a stepper motor and it has an opto switch to indicate home position. It calculates all the symbol positions by steps from that.

Each reel has a dedicated stepper driver board, which again is driven by the game software over a solenoid output. We can easily measure that it's not the drive transistor on the game's main driver board, so it's either wiring, stepper board or the motor itself.

I swap the center and left reel's motor output and opto switch connectors around to see if the problem moves to the next motor. It does not, the left one fails with known good board. I power the machine down and feel there's strong resistance in the motor. A touch test (bad idea in hindsight) reveals the motor is extremely hot and the bearings are probably dead now. Final verdict: replace the motor.

Oh look, it's yet another take on Vanilla coke, this time called Holiday Creamy Vanilla from Sweden. This is not the standard vanilla Coke in a different colored can either.

It smells very close to the vanilla version, but there's *something* added to it. It has this long, sweet aftertaste of what I assume is supposed to be the "creamy" part in addition to the vanilla taste.

Odd. Goes to the category of not terrible, not especially noteworthy either. Just a slightly different version of vanilla Coke.

Here's a local clone, Laitilan Le Pom. There's actually plenty of these clones, this being one of the better ones and it's cheap too. Again, it's hard to say what it tastes like other than generic, fresh undefined fruit. It's not candy-like sweet but it has sugar in it.

I've had the same issue when getting my van serviced. I used to have a place run by one very skilled dude. Eventually the shop grew and they got some questionable folk working there. I gave him serious feedback when the new guy forgot to tighten the shock absorber bolts that then fell off in Estonia.

He apologised for it and I let it slide as the shop was good otherwise so far. Then they replaced diesel filter and forgot to tighten the common rail high pressure pipe after bleeding the air. The high pressure side runs at around 1500 bar. Guess what happens when there's a loose connector?

A diesel fountain you say? Yes and pretty spectacular one.

If this makes you go "holy mother of god", then yes, you're at the same wavelength as I was when I spotted this one.

It has a bit artificial, yet pretty obvious smell of what this is and I think the taste is even more on the spot. I honestly don't know how I feel about this. I've tasted some weird sodas where the mouthfeel is messed up with a very familiar taste being in liquid form.

It's not bad per se, I can easily drink this but I don't know if I'd really want to enjoy my xmas bakings in soda form either.

This also landed in the stores during September, which just seems to be further proof of Christmas-creep that probably soon means the season products are sold mid-summer.

This happens elsewhere too. With XFCE I have dual head setup, where the primary screen is shared with a laptop that's sometimes in use. But the monitor switching input causes the windows just thrown around. It's the fix small shit Sunday. Our pinball streaming rigs have been built of old discarded microphone stands, most of them damaged somehow and whispered back to life by us.

This one originally had soft plastic pieces in the feet but two of them have long since disintegrated.

Drawing something like this with #FreeCAD is a cakewalk; get the pipe's outer diameter and then just throw throw something that'll fit, it doesn't have to be fancy.

I made this of Fiberlogy's Fiberflex 40D TPU with 100% infill. These are solid as hell and I made them tight enough that they can be negotiated into place but they're not coming off on their own.

Okay, I have now officially had it with the #AI rewritten e-mails.

It pissed me off when I first started getting these stupidly polished looking e-mails from people who can't spell to save their lives, from now on they "went to spam folder and I didn't think to look" and "maybe you need to avoid AI tools so the spam system doesn't get triggered".

At this point a lot of 3D printed tools I make aren't even about saving money any more, which they naturally do too, but to have something almost instantly when I need it and to have something that's custom made for my needs.

Like earlier I needed a specific shaped sanding wedge. I could've driven to the hardware store and buy something that sorta kinda works or just whip out a perfect fit in CAD and print it of PETG. Cost pennies and does exactly what I needed.

Some months ago I lampooned the Coke Cherry Float that tasted very similar to a standard coke. I almost didn't buy this, until I looked at the can and the picture I had taken earlier.

So here we have another Coke Cherry Float, except this is not the European variant I found earlier but an US import.

Guess what folks, I take back the dissing earlier, this one does taste a lot different than standard US coke. It has almost Dr. Peppery taste, so there's definitely an attempt at cherry, maybe even a hint of vanilla.

I wonder what's the story here, two separate attempts to make the same soda? Just general differences that happen when same soda is manufactured in different parts of the world? Who knows.

Anyway, this is surprisingly okay for flavored Coke variant.

Back in my teens the Internet could tell people how to make bombs. It was on every god damn newspaper. There was also "hackers can make your computer screen explode" there in the mix for a good measure. Everyone was terrified. Parents were telling their kids not to go to the Internet.

NBA FastBreak (Bally, 1997) has an interesting mechanical mini game that a lot of players miss, mostly thanks to the whole system being obstructed unless you study the playfield before playing.

This feature, called In the paint, recreates the classic mechanical basket ball game toy with a real pinball.

There are 4 saucers arranged in an arc around a basket ball hoop. Each saucer has a habitrail aimed from the saucer into the hoop. The saucers have kickers to move the ball sideways with mild force and upwards really hard, making the ball go into the hoop.

There's also a computer controlled defender player that moves along the arc. If it's positioned in front of a saucer, it blocks upward moving ball from going to the habitrail.

When this mini game is activated, you have a brief moment to try to distract the computer controlled player by passing the ball between the saucers and then hit the ball launch button to attempt to take the shot.

In addition to giving points, making a goal from all 4 positions starts Around the world multiball.

Looking at where the legs are, my guess is that it's a standard-ish cabinet with just the fibreglass add-ons slapped on the sides.

I recall MPU -35 has hinges, but I don't think they can turn with the add-on stuff on it, so the whole backbox probably comes off like with old Williams solid states.

They sure loved the fan layout, but then again it sold like hotcakes. AFM and MM basically vacuumed the coins from passing by people's pockets no matter where we put them.

Champion pub sure would've benefitted from the fighter being purely (or partly) virtual instead of the same dude over and over again, I always personally found it one of the weaker games in the otherwise stellar 90s Williams lineup, it was easy to finish on location and we made insane scores with it once the game progressed to the point where you can bet your score for the fights.

Revenge from Mars was to be the next generation of pinball, until WMS called quits with their pinball department back in '99. But this game is really wild in design. In a lot of places you can literally interact with the stuff on the screen with a ball. This is done with carefully placed targets around the playfield and then pictures projected to the semi-transparent playfield glass from the overhead CRT screen.

Here's one cool example, where a ball jumping from the ramp raising from the playfield "hits" a flying saucer, making it explode.

Behind the scenes the area where the saucer flies has a transparent piece of plastic to register the flying ball it and deflect it onto an area where it's held during the end of mode screen.

I've had pinball leg mounted drink holders since early 2000s, although those were pretty crude DIYs back when consumer 3D printing wasn't a thing. My very first take was just a piece of steel bent into a shape on L with holes for the leg bolts and then a ring big enough for a soda bottle welded onto that.

As my collection grew, somewhere in early 2010s the Pingulp was released. Not that it was an unique idea even then, but it was a good product. I own around 30 of those. At that point I had migrated from energy drinks to coffee and got used to having my coffee mug there.

Over the years the product got revised, the version 2.0 no longer fit the mug perfectly and by the 3.0 it was useless to me.

I had made my own variant when learning OpenSCAD back in the days, but saw no point in 3D printing something that was cheap and readily available. Until now.

So here's my version resurrected and redone with #freecad. It's intended to be cheap, customizable via color painting in slicers and easy to print. After some prototypes I think I have a model that works in arcade use as well.

I've always had a Mini, the current is 7th I've owned. I find it the perfect compromise between portability and still usable size screen and it's uses range from navigation in the car to being an e-reader in mass transit to just a generic Internet terminal.

Opened a new brand spool of clear PETG and I'm tuning the settings to make it more clear. This one (Sunlu Clear) doesn't like to operate at its top rated temperatures but lower ones seem fine, except it can't take faster speeds. So cold and slow it is.
