Magnitude Relay: The Fastest Nostr Relay

October 2026 · by JSKitty

Vector now runs on its own Nostr relay. Real Vector traffic is answered 38× faster, Community messages land 72× sooner, and the same data takes less than half the disk. View GitHub

300×

72×

38×

59%

Headroom

⚡Delivery

⚡Requests

Less Disk

Relays are the servers that carry Vector's encrypted messages between devices. They can't read your DMs or Communities (everything is gift-wrapped), but they decide how fast those load, sync and arrive.

Vector's relays ran strfry, the workhorse of Nostr. It served us well, but it's built for every kind of Nostr traffic, and Vector's is specific: gift-wrapped DMs, Concord Communities, negentropy sync and live typing indicators. So we built a relay for exactly that: Magnitude Relay, sibling to Magnitude, our media server. It took over both of Vector's relays on 21–22 October. Nobody had to update a thing.

DMs and Communities Load up to 10× Faster

Same machine, same two CPU cores, the same million Vector-shaped events, every answer checked. Here's how long each relay takes to answer what Vector asks.

What Vector asks, timed. Time to a complete answer, lower is better.

Catch up on two days of DMs

1.77 ms

0.17 ms

10.4× faster

Open a Community channel (500 messages)

0.41 ms

Scroll back through a busy Community (5 pages)

13.11 ms

1.75 ms

7.5× faster

Real Vector traffic (951 requests, 4.9M real events)

17.4 ms

0.45 ms

38× faster

Benchmarks: median time to a complete answer, 2 cores each, 1M Vector-shaped events, best of 3, 21 Oct 2026. Real traffic: mean time to a complete answer for 951 requests drawn from jskitty.com's real data, both relays answering side by side.

The last row counts most. We replayed 951 requests built from jskitty.com's 4.9 million real events against both relays side by side. The answers matched, except for messages their senders or recipients had asked to delete, which strfry was still serving. Magnitude Relay averaged 0.45 ms; strfry, 17.4 ms.

How. Messages live in one append-only log that's regrouped in the background, so each DM inbox and each Community sits together on disk: a 500-message inbox is one short read, not 500 scattered ones. Indexes are compressed, checksummed blocks behind a filter that rules out misses without reading a block, and the hot paths parse JSON and hex with SIMD.

Sync up to 6.7× Faster

After time offline, Vector catches up with negentropy (NIP-77): the app and relay compare compact fingerprints, and only what's missing is sent. Magnitude Relay builds those fingerprints from its index alone, without opening a single message.

Catching up after time offline. NIP-77 sync with the app already holding 90%, lower is better.

A busy DM inbox

29.9 ms

4.46 ms

6.7× faster

A quiet DM inbox

0.57 ms

0.14 ms

4.1× faster

Median time per sync session, 2 cores each, relay flat out, best of 3. Busy inboxes: 512 sessions/s vs 112. Quiet inboxes: 48,085/s vs 12,365.

The relays sync each other the same way, so a message sent to jskitty.com in Helsinki reaches Vector Asia in Kuala Lumpur in under a second.

Community Messages Arrive 72× Sooner

When someone posts in a Community, the relay stores the message and pushes it to every member online. That gap is the relay's whole share of how instant chat feels.

One message, a 1,000-member Community. Live delivery, median.

Magnitude Relay

0.58 ms

72× sooner for a typical message: 0.58 ms vs 41.9 ms.

18× sooner for the slowest 1 in 100: 6.1 ms vs 111 ms.
---
1,000 members subscribed, 4 senders, 2,000 messages/s for 20 s, 2 cores each, every delivery checked, none missed by either. 21 Oct 2026.

strfry picks up new messages for delivery in small batches, which adds tens of milliseconds to each one. Magnitude Relay delivers the moment a message is safely on disk.

Ready to Scale

Today each Vector relay averages about 34 requests and 3 new messages a second. On just two CPU cores, Magnitude Relay handles over 11,000 DM inbox loads and 29,000 new messages a second: more than 300× today's reads and 9,000× today's writes.

What one relay can carry on two cores. Work per second, higher is better.

Same machine, 2 cores each, 1M Vector-shaped events, best of 3, 21 Oct 2026. Both relays confirm a message only once it's on disk. Today's load: jskitty.com's average over 22–23 Oct.

Every message reaches each relay more than once (Vector sends to several, and the relays sync each other), so skipping duplicates 24× faster frees the relay for real work.

Proven in Production

Vector's two relays, in the 30 hours after their latest update on 22–23 October:

6,765,112

requests answered

0.23 ms

average time to a complete answer

58,402,815

events delivered to apps

856,293

connections served

From each relay's public /stats, 23 Oct 2026. Answer time is measured inside the relay; the network adds its own.

Every Vector relay has a public dashboard. jskitty.com's is at jskitty.com/nostr/dashboard.

A Switch with Zero Downtime

No downtime, a way back at every step, no message lost.

20–21 Oct: Dress rehearsal. A hidden copy of Magnitude Relay, fed every new event live, answers real requests side by side with strfry, and catches two bugs before any user could.

21 Oct, 21:56 UTC: jskitty.com switches. 4,877,620 events copied over, one web server reload, strfry kept in sync behind it as a way back. Nobody is cut off.

22 Oct, 01:44 UTC: Vector Asia switches. The two relays now sync each other directly, typing indicators included.

22 Oct, midday: strfry retires on both servers after a quiet night.

Updates roll out one relay at a time, each back online in about half a second. A release that isn't healthy within 30 seconds is rolled back automatically.

Built for Self-Hosters

Our rule: maximum speed on minimum hardware. Every change that cost resources had to prove it made the relay faster.

Less than half the disk. The same 4.9 million events.

Relay

Disk used

strfry

27 GB

Magnitude Relay

11 GB

59% smaller, measured on jskitty.com's real data, 22 Oct 2026.

Most relays, strfry included, slow down once the database outgrows memory; this summer, that happened to jskitty.com. So we tested Magnitude Relay with 13 GB of real data and only 1 GB of memory:

0.17–0.30 ms to open the 50 busiest DM inboxes in the dataset

9,100+/s busy inboxes served, 50× more than with the data in arrival order

Process held to 1 GiB by the kernel (cgroup), its page cache dropped first, 4.81M real events, 21 Oct 2026.

In production each relay uses 190–370 MB of its own memory while serving over a thousand connections. After loading a million events, its total footprint was 1.2 GB against strfry's 3.1 GB, 61% less (most of both is cached database the system can reclaim).

Updates cost about half a second. Stopping takes 0.3 s and starting again 0.25 s, across 4.9 million events.

jskitty.com, measured at the switch and on later updates: 0.54–0.88 s from restart to answering again. Only the newest part of the log is replayed, so start-up stays short as data grows.

One program, one settings file.
magnitude-relay init
writes a commented one.

Moves in from strfry. Imports strfry exports directly, checking every signature, and can sync with a running strfry while you try it.

HTTPS built in. Fetches and renews its own certificates, or sits behind nginx on a local socket.

Live backups. A consistent copy of the store without stopping the relay.

Dashboard and metrics. The page above, plus Prometheus metrics.

Relay-to-relay sync. Keep several relays complete with NIP-77, as jskitty.com and Vector Asia do.

Private by Design

A relay can't read gift-wrapped messages, but it decides what's kept, and whether delete means delete.

What Happens to Your Data

Never stored

What it accepts

Anything

Vector's kinds only

⚠️ No

Built in

Moving jskitty.com over, we found 38 vanish requests and 24 deletions strfry had never applied, covering over a thousand events. Magnitude Relay applied them all on import, and now overwrites deleted data on disk. Both relays also serve Tor and I2P, as gateways to the relay only.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

strfry and Doug Hoyte, for carrying Vector's messages from the start, and for negentropy, the sync protocol both relays still speak

The Nostr community, for an open protocol anyone can build a relay for

Rust and Tokio, for making fast and safe the same thing

Like Open-Source DOOM, Magnitude Relay was built as a collaboration between a human developer and an AI (Claude, by Anthropic).

Vector needed a relay as fast as its client.
So we built one.

We've just released the latest Q3 Report for 2026! Be sure to check out all of the improvements over the past 3 months, as well as what currently is in development and what is to come in the near future!

Full Blog:
https://vectorapp.io/blog/q3-2026-report/

quoting naddr1qv…20sp

Vector Q3 2026 Report: Development & Growth

July through September 2026 · by Vector Privacy

· 4 Releases Shipped
· 33 New Features
· 49 Issues Fixed
· 1 Grant Received

The State of Privacy

In July, the European Parliament fell short of the votes needed to kill Chat Control. The proposal survived, and the argument moved behind closed doors into trilogue negotiations, where the fate of private messaging for roughly 450 million people would be settled without most of them watching.

On September 29, in the sixth of those negotiations, the compromise failed. Negotiators were asked to accept a reframing that would have relabelled mass scanning as "targeted" by pointing it at parts of a service rather than at named suspects. They declined. The Council's own legal service had already concluded that such a reading would amount to general and indiscriminate surveillance, and would not survive review. For now, end-to-end encrypted messaging remains outside the scanning mandate.

We want to be precise about what that is. It is a reprieve, not a resolution. The file returns to the table in November, and the pressure behind it has not weakened, it has only been redirected. Every quarter we have written one of these reports, the same proposal has still been alive at the end of it.

Meanwhile the machinery underneath carries on regardless of any vote. Identity checks spread to more of the services people depend on. Metadata, the record of who spoke to whom and when, is still collected by platforms that cannot read the messages themselves and sold by those that can. For a journalist protecting a source or an organizer working under a hostile government, the gap between a scanned conversation and a private one is not a policy preference. It is the difference between safety and exposure.

This is the ground Vector was built on, and Q3 was the quarter it got reinforced from two directions at once. We shipped four releases in nine weeks, including a second generation of the Concord Protocol and a bot platform built on it. And in August, the Human Rights Foundation backed Vector through its Bitcoin Development Fund, placing the project alongside fifteen others building tools for people who live where these questions are already settled badly.

We did not wait for the world to get safer. We built the tools that help people stay safe inside the one we have.

Features Added in Q3 2026

Where Q2 was a single deliberate leap, Q3 was a sprint. Four releases landed between July 14 and August 31, less about adding one large thing than about making the v0.4.0 foundation hold weight. Each feature links to its documentation.

One notable change: In Concord v2, a Community's address is derived from its owner's own key, which means a forged invite is not detected and rejected, it is unmintable.

Communities & Moderation

Concord v2 - Community addresses derive from the owner's key, and every admin action carries proof of authority

Moderation at Speed - a whole wave of bans now costs one key rotation

Raid Recovery - sever a raid in progress and close the way it came in

Pinned Messages - pin rules and announcements for the whole channel

Bots & the Vector SDK

Bots & Slash Commands - type / for a command picker, over encrypted messages

Vector SDK - a few lines of Rust gets you a working bot

Privacy & Security

Ephemeral Messages - per-chat timers that truly erase on both ends

Amber Signing - on Android, your key lives in a separate vault

Biometric Unlock - lock Vector behind your phone's screen lock

EXIF Stripping - photos ship without location or device metadata

Link Spoof Guard - links that hide their real destination are blocked

Private Notifications - hide the sender, the message, or both

Tor Refresh - four releases ahead of September's network transition

Mini App Isolation - every Mini App gets its own storage

Identity & Expression

Profile QR Codes - share and scan profiles instead of pasting keys

Rich Message Composer - markdown, mentions and emojis render as you type

Holographic Badges - tiered Bug Hunter badges on a 3D tilt, with real perks

Status, Redesigned - a compact editor with a live preview

Custom Emoji Fidelity - shortcodes survive copy, cut and truncation

Sync & Devices

Synced Blocks, Mutes & Nicknames - your lists follow you between devices

Pinned Chats - favourites stay at the top, on every device

Account Switching, Rebuilt - background tasks stay bound to their own account

Smart-Forwarding - resend a file you already hold without re-uploading it

Per-Chat Drafts - unsent text stays where you typed it

Speed & Platform

The Speed Pass - first sync fell from about a minute to about two seconds

Volley Sync - Community channels paint newest-first at boot

Media Mirroring - every upload is copied to a second server

Self-Updating Sideloads - Android builds update themselves outside app stores

Beta Updates Channel - opt into release candidates from Settings

Linux & Wayland Polish - a proper desktop entry and working titlebars

For the full story behind each of these, with screenshots and the reasoning that shaped them, read the v0.4.1 and v0.4.2 release posts.

Release Summaries

v0.4.1 (July 14, 2026)

Seven weeks after Concord arrived, 518 commits landed in a release that calling a point update undersells badly. A second generation of the protocol, bots with real slash commands, ephemeral messages, keys that never touch the app, and a speed pass deep enough that first sync fell from about a minute to about two seconds. It is the release where the foundation laid in v0.4.0 started carrying real weight.

v0.4.2 (August 15, 2026)

325 commits across six preview builds, every one of them in Community hands within hours of being cut. Where v0.4.1 rebuilt foundations, v0.4.2 was about everything you touch while standing on them: the Rich Composer, profile QR codes, pinned chats and messages, a redesigned Status, and preferences that finally follow you between devices. It was also the first release shaped end to end by the new preview channel.

v0.4.3 (August 15, 2026)

A same-day follow-up, out roughly four hours after v0.4.2. Tor on Windows was freezing at 15% bootstrap and failing to connect on both x64 and ARM64, which is the kind of bug that matters most to exactly the people least able to report it. Also fixed: phantom typing indicators when another Nostr client was signed in under the same account, and dissolved Communities that would not stay dissolved across devices. We would rather ship a patch the same evening than leave a Tor user stranded for a fortnight.

v0.4.4 (August 31, 2026)

The quarter closed on hardening rather than headlines. Smart-Forwarding stopped Vector re-encrypting and re-uploading files it already held, raid recovery gave Community owners a way to sever an attack in progress, and a long list of fixes landed across key rotation, ban enforcement, member list sync, and Mini App networking. Linux got a proper desktop entry and working Wayland titlebars, Windows lost its DLL error popups, and Android notification replies started reaching the right conversation.

Human Rights Foundation Grant

On August 25, the Human Rights Foundation announced grants totaling more than 500 million satoshis through its Bitcoin Development Fund, across sixteen projects. Vector was one of them, listed under the heading Privacy by Principle.

What we value in their write-up is where it starts. Not with encryption, but with what Vector refuses to ask for: no account creation, no metadata trail, no permission to speak. That has been the design constraint since the first commit, and it is a particular kind of validation to have it read back as the point rather than as a feature.

The grant funds three things: Vector's first release on iOS alongside a widescreen desktop client, encrypted voice and video calls, and a stable censorship-resistant tool for journalists, activists, and whistleblowers. The first of those is already underway and is covered below.

It changes the pace, and it changes nothing else. Vector remains free and open source. There is no investor at the table, no equity sold, and no obligation attached beyond building what we already said we were building. A grant does not make software trustworthy. Being verifiable does.

We would also rather share the category than own it. Three other Nostr projects were funded in the same round, and a single encrypted messenger is a product where several interoperating on an open protocol is infrastructure. The full announcement is on HRF's site, and our own write-up is here.

Next Major Milestone: v0.5.0

v0.5.0 is already in progress on a dedicated branch, and it is the first grant deliverable to take shape. Here is where it stands.

Widescreen Desktop Client

The headline of v0.5.0, and work has started. A phone-shaped window does not do a Community justice on a large screen, so we are building a true four-pane desktop shell: the Community rail, your chats, the conversation and the community's details, side by side. It already runs that way on the branch, and narrower than 900px it folds back into the familiar phone layout. This is the release where Vector stops being a phone app that happens to run on a desktop and becomes a communication hub that earns the screen it is on.

Frontend Refactor

After roughly eighteen months of continuous development, it was time for a deep clean, and it is done. Vector's frontend now runs on Svelte, which compiles away at build time, so the app ships lighter and the interface updates itself when state changes rather than through hand-written wiring. Less code, and fewer places for bugs to hide.

Encrypted Voice and Video Calls

The second grant deliverable, and already working on the branch. Vector's call system is built in-house: one-to-one voice and video calls, with screen sharing, set up through the same encrypted messages as your DMs, with the two devices connecting directly, encrypted end to end. Calls work between desktops, in Vector Web, and on iPhone. Calls in Community channels come next.

Vector Web

Vector in the browser: the same app, with its Rust core compiled to WebAssembly, for anyone who can't or won't install it. It went live at the end of September, and your keys stay in your browser, never on our servers.

iOS

The third grant deliverable, and the platform gap we hear about most. A native app is next in line, and until it lands, Vector Web gives iPhone and iPad users Vector today. Added to the Home Screen, it runs like a native app, with voice and video calls and private, encrypted, low-metadata push notifications that arrive in the background, even with the app closed and the phone locked.

Community Polish

A steady run of improvements on top of the new foundation: richer roles, better moderation tools, and smarter discovery. The work that turns a strong first version into the place people spend the day.

Closing

The world did not become a safer place for privacy in Q3 2026. Chat Control survived the vote meant to stop it, and the only reason encrypted messaging is still outside its reach is that one negotiation in September refused a bad compromise. That file is back on the table in November.

Vector shipped four releases, built and improved the underlying protocol.

Privacy is a basic human right. We say it, we repeat it, and we build from it. Every feature in this report, every fix in every patch, and every install is one more step toward making that right real for someone who needs it. To everyone who ran a preview build, filed a bug with a log attached, argued with us about a design decision, or simply believed that a conversation should belong to the people having it: thank you.

The work continues.

Join the Vector Community

Vector Community Invite Link

Get connected with the Vector Community, where you can meet other like-minded privacy advocates and make friends from around the world. Get the latest updates in development, insights, and some teasers only dropped in the Vector Community!

Vector Privacy is a free, open-source, decentralized communication platform built on Nostr. No KYC. No metadata. No ads. No compromise.

Click that, then reopen the app and confirm.

We have this documented on our GitBook if you also want to reference:
https://vector-privacy.gitbook.io/vector-privacy/guides/guides/getting-started#macos

If you have any questions, feel free to tag us or tag other Vector users.

      💣 Ephemeral Message Teaser

Commonly referred to as:
"Self-Destructing"
"Disappearing"
"Vanquishing"
"Ephemeral"

Messages that auto-delete once a set time interval passes (Ex: 10 seconds, 1 minute, 1 day).

We've had this feature planned since the beginning, but it just took some time to implement due to the long backlog of other features. We will be releasing the first iteration in v0.4.1 soon™ (can already test on the v0.4.1 Pre-Release on GitHub). Thanks to everyone who suggested this nice privacy feature, you will be able to use it soon. If you have any feedback or suggestions to further improve it, like other time intervals, just let us know!

Stay tuned for much more to follow in the v0.4.1 release...

YuurinBee (nprofile…hh2y) JSKitty (nprofile…tsc6)

      Optimizers gonna optimize.

Want faster audio transcriptions? You got it. ✅

We've now been able to improve the transcription time by approximately 500%. The most important factor is that people who are using slower and older devices still have access to the same resources and features on Vector.

You can expect these optimizations and features available on the next release for v0.3.1 and that includes you, Android users.
