In reply to nevent1q…kzza
_________________________

OK, that’s all of them and they’re all smooth, I’m . . . almost HAPPY, I’m so stoked 😀
.
FFS.
.
It took me a loooong time to think my way through that problem, I’m a little embarrassed, but I don’t care, all’s well as ends well. 😅
.
The new wheels had the modern spline bore, and I filed them square to work with the original posts. 👍
.
Well, the downside is that I used the wheels from the Framus Vintage set - I mean, that makes them sort of legit - but now I have to count that $200 in the cost. 🙄
.
The new wheels are steel, with flat screws and now my extra screws and washers are the wrong colour and screw, so the back isn’t very pretty. Easy and cheap to replace, if it ever seems not pointless. I mean, that is never going to be pretty.
.
But it’s so right from the front, all the same, and short, neat posts. The original ones. Happy, almost.👍💜
.
/86
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

The neck is my shape now, I'll be happy to try to play soft since it feels so nice now.
.
So I'm out of lacquer, planned and used every drop and now I have to buy a whole new can again, I've sanded it smooth and stained it, it's ready.
.
So I'm onto the tuners after all, one string at a time, not waiting to make it easier with a new set, I can't wait - couldn't wait - to know if my re-bored cogs were going to work, and -
.
The first one's working, and it was my worst square bore, but it's holding and it's SMOOTH, OMG. One out of twelve, so far so good. 👍
.
/85
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Really, I suppose it's a Pinker book, he commissioned it from her, I think.
.
He probably did because she is one of the world's great writers. As I was hating everything she said, I was falling for her, for that writing voice, LOL
.
But the book is the worst of what I call NT science.
.
every three years, seven, ten, fifteen kids - it's a good theory if women love to suffer, LOL

      In reply to nevent1q…5hr9
_________________________

OK, feel free to skip ahead to the punchline, ha ha ha ha
.
First, no jig, I solved that issue from the other side of it, I figured out how to hold the damned guitar steady instead. Had it strapped down Dexter style, then with it not moving I could keep focus on my block, the angle.
.
I put the V shape on it - not really, it’s a V on the sides but the middle of the back is round/flat, and changes end to end a bit - I like to pretend it’s like the American Masters neck from, you know, that evil multinational corporation. Imma get sued. 😜
.
But I did the basic shape yesterday.
.
I thought the action got lower, but couldn’t believe it enough to be sure.
.
Then I was supposed to wait and see for a week, but of course I did some more today, took a bit more off and cleaned it up near the edges. Again, the strings look LOWER.
.
I wonder if the real luthiers are ahead of me? 😜
.
This guitar turns fifty-nine years old next month, I found it because it was broken and very much end of life - so the neck was bent forward. I didn’t get to see it, the breaks opened instead when I might have, but of course it was - IS.
.
This neck was forcing it forward the whole time, never pulling it back. The only thing pull - pushing it back, I mean, was my new added fretboard. I’m sanding the wood off the part that was raising the strings!
.
Thinking I’d better stop while I can play it at all, before the strings are laying right on the frets. As it is, it’s an acoustic jazz guitar, crazy low and needing a light touch (which ain’t really me, LOL).
.
The saddle is already almost full height too. 🧐
.
On the plus side, shape is nice, and maybe I got a little relief back? I’m complaining: dammit, I got a vintage acoustic twelve string jazz guitar. I hate it when that happens.😠
😜💜💜💜
.
/84
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

The action is low, I can’t hit it hard at all, and there’s a little shim under the saddle too.
.
I think I can take the shoulders off the neck a bit and let it fall forward a bit.
.
I’m thinking since it really doesn’t have the cash value that I think it should anyway, my luthier/broker said so, that I might as well see if I can get it closer to small enough for me. It seems OK, but not for very long. It’s already too fat, I can’t be only raising the strings without taking something off, this is the only way I can fix that, I mean for my hands.
.
It’s the back of the neck I’ll be pressing on, shouldn’t stress the breaks, whereas pressing on the front might open them up.
Might! Did already, both of ‘em.
.
My only problem is I already tried to get this wood off and failed the first time. I need to make a jig to keep the tools at the right angle, something probably around sixty degrees. I want to see a long flat spot. Then I suppose I’ll want the strings off and the shim out, and if that’s happening I can put the final tuners on.
.
Once more into the breach, my friends.
.
Not immediately, I have to work out this jig business first.
/81
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

      I’m on Dad’s side now.
.
That’s another NT binary that isn’t, abusers and victims - they’re all NT, no-one escapes, they all pass it on, being a victim frees them up morally, and they are all both at once. . . . about authority
.
to my mind, the fractal root of the technical nightmares, of the Frankenstein meme, meddling with what is not for us to touch, is about power and violence, we never should have touched the toxic evil of authority, but we touched it, we learned of it and it learned about us or something, we touched it and it’s in us, like
cookies touching milk.
.
Like a perfectly addictive drug, our parents were hooked and we are born addicted, with a need, a disease we have no chance to avoid and no chance to know what life would look like without it. Someone touched it once, against their better judgment, surely expediently, as it always seems still, and everything changed, people began to lose touch with the world, and some timer was started.
.
So it’s forever the warnings and the worries that some such thing will happen, because we know it happens, because it already happened, but really it’s too late, these are not warnings so much as known truths, and we should hear them as history, not futurism. None of the modern world ending technologies would have come up if we hadn’t already foolishly played with the fire of personal power and violence, had we not begun cheating on the old morality by trying to “use,” a thing we never should have touched.
.
#ActuallyAutistic #NTPsychology #Philosophy #ND

      Divergent thoughts about biblical creation:
.
you know, I’ve been talking about biblical creation as the beginning of NT people, but I’ve been ignoring half of the story. Of course it’s about the Fall, isn’t it. 😀🫣😬
.
Off the top of my head, the first soundbite that has been careening around in it and needs to be let out is the bit from Paradise Lost, when our antihero Beelzebub declares that it is better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven - this to me must
be NT-ness, Allism, and it is the point of most of what I say that it is NOT better, that ruling and thinking your world is Hell makes it so, and that as someone else said, serving and thinking your world is Heaven would make that so instead.
.
Off course in this story, Beelzebub is only the first to Fall into that view and that life, into that neurology.
.
Not sure I’ll have more anytime soon, but 💜🤨
/1
.
Actually Autistics (npub1pce…geep) #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticScience #NTPPsychology #AuDHD #ND #Philosophy

I mean, I’m not usually wearing my specs. 😘
.
If you have trouble playing F chords or Bflats, this is surely why, because the nut is five times higher than anything else.
.
I can totally see and feel these moving and so I’m out to shop for a needle file at Home Depot before I try to do it with the wrong tools and before I have to go buy one at Stew Mac.
.
ADDING: I thought I’d been keeping my calluses, playing a little every day, but when I picked this up as it is now, I felt immediately, This isn’t small enough for me, and where did my calluses go? That’s what a high nut feels like. I mean, I did hope to get it smaller, but it was within range at the easy end, except it doesn’t feel like it at present.
.
I understand they have to build it with some room, it’s going to matter the gauge of the strings and such. The slots won’t rise with time, if anything they may sink a little.
.
Plus it sucks to go too far and having to glue something tiny but hard back in there, etc.
.
But labour is money and quality, if someone spends this extra time tweaking the nut down, I guarantee they’ll love their guitar more. 💜
.
/76
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

a ramble. I need to write to think.
.
whoever said antisemitism is part antimonotheism, I don’t think they were wrong, but they probably had it in the usual Allistic timeline, meaning that the pantheons of lesser gods are old and monotheism is new, but for me the fight against monotheism is the other way around, the new, aggressive people have fractured, split personality gods and their war began against the primal goddess of the stone age. This places antisemitism as an oddly consistent over time because it’s the same battle that the Steppe people brought at the beginning of history, the new modern humans battle against the Old World, the genetic drift of the new people.
.
Counterintuitive, for sure, the Hebrews were supposed to be the new monotheists as contrasted with Egypt, but that wasn’t really how it was for their first few millennia, and some readings of the OT, the Lord may as well be Mars, they were monotheistic if life was about nothing but war, but there were other gods earlier.
.
It’s a theme, the normal narrative, what I call #AllisticScience , sees a before picture where I (and Gimbutas and anyone who believes in the peaceful Neolithic) see the after picture and an earlier transformation. We don’t see the Greek Pantheon as primal.
.
Full disclosure, shoot myself in the foot moment: I think we think the Hindu pantheon IS primal, grown out of animism? I need to find some Asian prehistory, but do we think that of the Greeks? In ways yes, in ways I don’t think so, it always seems like the gods vs the earthbound creatures. I could be clearer about this.
.
ah, tired myself out.
.
/1 maybe
.
#Philosophy #History #NTPsychology Actually Autistics (npub1pce…geep)

the person I was speaking to has said goodnight, so I’ll “speak as though to the air,” if you’ve read Neurotribes.
.
The pattern I pulled out of #TheChaliceAndTheBlade about ancient history was that Allistic people happened somehow and their aggression sent them off conquering the world of peaceful Neolithic peoples, and after every great conquest, they would kill the men and breed with the women, diluting their Allistic warrior genetics by half in the next few generations.

Still the Allistic men were in charge and war never really stopped, only paused and war encompasses all, and these newly pacified people begin to follow the Allistic invaders’ evolution, and this society now grows and evolves towards unsustainable levels of aggression again until another public meltdown and another conquest - and until the last millennia, there were new, Neolithic/Indigenous to assimilate, and a relative peace following each conquest, as old genes are again freshly incorporated, before the Allistic environment has unselected them again.
.
this scenario has almost been completed, the Allistics vastly outnumber the remaining Neolithic peoples today.
.
All that was just to get to the new thought, that this is where the Allistics’ mad idea of a war to end all wars originated, in the postwar temporary genetic influx of old genes that happened repeatedly throughout ancient (European) history, that’s why they think war makes peace, because it looked like it did.
.
All that is in the past though, there aren’t enough old genes to affect the drift anymore, any more such peaceful intervals with be highly localized and increasingly rare now. Anyway, we need more than just a breather every milennium, this evolution needs to stop
and turn around completely.
.
But you need to know where you’ve been and all
that 🙄🤨😇💜
.
#ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #ND #Philosophy #History Actually Autistics (npub1pce…geep)

      Antisocialization theory and neurotype again.
.
it’s all problematic, you can see everything two ways, depending on context, the level of context - it’s like the, “Oh, that’s good/No, that’s bad,” sketch from Hee Haw, if you’re old, white and American enough for that reference.
.
I speak all the time about how spanking makes them hate and how thinking poorly of people in general (like Christian Original Sin, or Palaeolithic Emotions, meaning we are emotionally unevolved) is destroying the world through punishment at home and war abroad - so thinking well of people sounds like the answer -
.
But, No, that’s bad! Because despite that thinking everyone is bad is destructive, a self-fulfilling attitude, thinking everyone is good when they maybe are not has difficulties too. Problematic, as I said. We need to think we’re good, but it needs to be real, there has to be a reason we’re good, we would have to be trying to be good, doing something to make ourselves good - and the abuse of punishment doesn’t do that, how many generations does it take to see it?
.
If we think we’re bad now, unfortunately, that attitude has that support, we do all know that we are abused, both maliciously and with good intentions, and so there is a sort of proof, a case to be made. Unfortunately, this logic doesn’t rise to consciousness, somehow, and knowing this cause somehow doesn’t translate to changing it.
.
So I’m glad if you think,”people are good,” but it doesn’t mean much if you’re abusing anyone while you think it, if your kids are getting threatened and punished. You may be sort of believing in one world while living in and contributing to another there.
.
We are divided politically, right down the middle if you believe the teevee, half think people are good and half not so much, but last I heard 85% of North Americans self reported spanking. You wouldn’t be alone.
.
BTW, don’t we think that’s the percentage of the majority neurotype too? The entire normal population sees no reason not to spank and no reason not to tell you about it?
.
#ND #AuDHD #NTPsychology #ActuallyAutistic #Philosophy #Psychology

I don’t want to single the person out, and I’m not, believe me, every normal person and most of the weirdos say what I’m about to argue with. I’m borrowing their text, though, it’s perfect, just what nearly everyone thinks.
.
“I think violence is a part of human nature and could never go away. Even if you found a way to stop all physical violence, the human aggression that causes it would still exist.”
.
I have a hard time accepting this, but I don’t think the majority sees anything wrong with that statement. Honestly, I think it’s built in, evolved into the majority.
.
But from over here in Divergent World, what I see is an excuse never to change anything, never to stop whatever is causing the aggression. “It would still exist,” so it is beyond causality, beyond science or thought? Purely a spiritual matter?
.
I’m still a toddler among the adults of Allistic science, having to ask, “Why?,” every ten seconds because, “because of Human Nature,” isn’t a real First Cause, you’re just sloughing your child off - OK, Dad, I’ll keep
it going: why, “Human Nature?” And anyway, when someone isn’t aggressive for thirty seconds, isn’t that, “Human Nature,” too?
.
You have the same answer for opposite questions?
.
But back to the point, the majority is so certain that aggression is natural and proper, causeless and inevitable that they will not experiment, will not learn anything further about it.
.
#ActuallyAutistic #ND #AuDHD #Philosophy #NTPsychology Actually Autistics (npub1pce…geep)

I suppose things have changed, my morning fixed thoughts have to some degree moved on from my kids to the global puzzle, I spend a lot of time to imagine how to reach people, the majority, how to break through their indifference to causality, show them how they are forever making things worse.
.
Nobody loves me, nobody needs me, so in this time between working and dying I’m trying to save the world, which clearly needs saving.
.
But things get infinitely complicated when you start modifying and controlling your own environment, the environment that also modifies and controls you.
.
There’s a time travel film from this century, I think, called Primal, and the narrative inevitably unravels, especially because you learn that our time traveller is bringing his machine with him into the past and then time travelling from there, etc., complicating matters further - that’s as close an analogy, to the complexity as I can think of to people, “controlling,” their environment while adapting to it.
.
It’s not perfect. I expect the traveller in Primal knew he was changing the timeline - while the human sort engaged in controlling their environment don’t seem to think anyone is adapting. This is a further complication, this apparent blindness to ongoing human adaptation.
.
This is the wall I beat my head against every day, how to convince them evolution is real, present, and inevitable? They already think they know it and believe in it. It’s a version with a twist, they know about evolution, that’s how they became this unchanging, unchangeable thing, the brutality of the past
made us this way forever! Somehow it all gets turned on its head.
.
TBC, probably.
1/
.
#ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD
#ND #NTPsychology #Philosophy #Psychology

No tuners, but I got a lead for a luthier who is retiring, I’ll try them for that.
.
Saw something interesting, last I saw and I’ve been advising people about this, that the new 3/4 size guitars still had fat, full girth necks, that they may travel better, but they weren’t any help for people with small hands like me - well, that seems to have changed, the guitar industry seemed to have noticed that small people and people with small hands would also like to buy guitars and I saw a handful of them that I could get
my little paw around this time, that almost passed my test!
.
So, I’m sorry, retracted! I mean I wish I hadn’t stripped one of the new posts and broken the handle off of one of the old ones, destroying one of twelve of each, one vintage and one new - but this is best in the end.
.
For the old ones there’s one little upside, the handles weren’t modular, they’re stuck to the strips. If one broke off (I mean later), it’s the whole strip. The other old strip I’m using is modular for that, and I have spare handles.
.
For the new ones, it would have been nice to have new gear, to not have thrown that money away for nothing, but it’s new crap too, irreparable if it breaks.
.
So these strips and handles are proper old and modular, it looks right at a glance - the posts aren’t, well six are old, but not from this or any 12 string, and they almost match the six new posts - I still have twelve matching old posts I want to install when I find six more good wheels with the oval bore, and I’ll keep looking for those.
.
/71
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Mind you, plan A, the laminated neck is the same spacing, I’d have had the same problem.
.
I’ve put something together, but there is one stiff one, the handle is tight in the frame with no wheel attached, I have to fix that before the knob breaks off, which happened once already in this process. If I can fix that the very last possible thing will have worked, but I’ll know there’ll be nothing for another old Framus no matter how nice it may be otherwise. And nothing for this one if one more thing breaks.
😬🫣
.
EDIT TO ADD: Using a cheap trick I used on my very first Texan, to fit new after market tuners on a Framus, breaking the strip apart (the Framus spacing on a six string is further apart).
.
Well, even the Framus tuners don’t really fit Framus guitars so I’ve done the same thing now with my last strips. In fact those are the very screws and fancy washers holding the middle piece of the strip in place because the middle one only has one mounting screw. Colour matched buk shi.
.
new wheels all around and all
of them fitting straight in their holes now. There’s still some stiffness here and there, but in theory it should be good and in reality it mostly is.
👍
.
/70
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I gave myself yesterday off from it all and so far today too, and planning to keep it that way.
.
I didn’t solve it all, but I have reduced and simplified the problem. I just need to find another set of six basic tuners with wheels I can use, that’s where I’ve found six so far, they’re out there.
.
I mean, that’s the ideal solution. There will always be the option of finding twelve new individual tuners that fit within one inch centres.
.
SO disappointed about the Framus Vintage “real,”
set. That was going to be my, “if nothing else works, I can just PAY,” solution, and it wasn’t. At all. Tell your friends. What’s happening at Fender happened at Framus in the early ‘70s.
.
Another capitalist, World of Illusion bit of bullshit, they can make it and sell it, it does everything for the economy but fucking work.
.
/69
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Now I want it back, LOL. Having said that, it’s awfully nice this way, plus you learn about your fret surfaces when it’s this low, found out the second fret was still a bit high on the bass side, and it still looks like some body rise.
.
Still tuning it upwards, waiting for the strings to settle and kind of hoping the wood will too, a little.
.
The tuners still suck. 😠
.
/66
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

That’s a result. 👍
.
Now again it’s a matter of trying to be patient if the repair needs to cure - but does superglue need that, I don’t seem to believe so - so next is stringing it up again, see how the nut is working, I’ve bought some of the supposedly warmer sounding strings, see if that helps.
.
I hadn’t noticed, but the blue pack D’addario strings I had used do say “extra bright,” all over them. 🙄
.
/65
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I have one idea. I think the new wheels are too big or the old peg holes are too close to the handle gear, and I think I can try opening the peg holes by a /32” to increase that distance a bit.
.
The tuners are giving me fits.
I wish I was surer that the existing ones were old and stiff before I put the big ferrules on, but they must have been or I’d have noticed the nasty change immediately. And they’re clearly old, despite being very clean.
.
First I took them apart and oiled it all, didn’t help.
.
then I tried more than once to find a combination of wheels and pegs from my spare parts supply, to no avail.
.
Then I gave up and ordered the expensive new ones.
.
They don’t fit, at least not on this particular guitar. So I tried to use the new wheels and pegs in the old strips, and I was able to put that together, but it’s not a good fit, they’re still stiff and horrible.
.
Tomorrow, we drill out one hole, see if it helps, and all of them if it does.
.
I assume, as I usually do, that if I ever get it working I’ll be the only idiot who ever did, that a normal person would let these things die. 😠🙄
.
It’s going to be very satisfying, though.
.
/64
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

The new Framus Vintage tuners seem like Chinese crap and they don’t fit, the strip js shorter, the spread is too short for my actual vintage Framus guitar with no ferrules at all.
.
I’ve taken the new pegs and wheels off the new strips and put them on the old ones, we’ll see how that works. You can’t change the handles on the old strips, but that side of the gear doesn’t look worn, steel vs brass, I guess. Plus the old handles are bigger and look more original.
.
They don’t seem to have been the originals, though, there’s a different set of old screw holes under those strips. - EDIT TO ADD: - wrong! Upon closer inspection, those aren’t screw holes, just the indentations from the rivets that hold the old tuning strips together.
.
Now I do think these were the first set. 👍 Original look, new gears, sounds perfect, except the fit isn’t quite. I think the peg holes in the old strips want to be a little bigger for the new pegs, the pegs are standing up at other than perpendicular, leaning towards the guitar a bit. Thinking about it, but it’s a huge PITA, and probably impossible without damaging the handle gears.
.
I’m going to see if they work alright this way, fingers crossed.
.
Still working on the repair, going to go after the rest of the crack, all the way around, and it might be too hot out for lacquering when that’s done.
.
This might keep me busy all summer after all. 💜
.
/63
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I’ve been stringing and unstringing this thing for a few weeks, and the break near the headstock opened up at the start - now for the first time I felt a sharp edge in the other break, the one at the other end of the neck on the . . . heel, is it called?
😳
.
It didn’t open up yet, the action hasn’t risen. But my fingernail did go right in on one side.
.
Hoping to nip that in the bud, I unstrung it again, scratched that crack open a little, gave it some warm water and then filled it with super glue and clamped it. I know it’s super glue, but I still plan to leave the clamp on overnight, as someone said, that’s the most important thing.
.
I went down to Long and McQuade for a warmer set of strings. The thing is so bright I can’t stand it. I suppose I’ll try to tweak the nut again before I put them on and see if the break stays put. And the repair needs lacquer, so the glue can dry for another day or two as well.
.
So close!!! Now I’ve shaped them all smaller and all the same, and it’s almost interference free.
.
New tuners, new set of strings, action at a reasonable height. I can’t hold a bard chord down, and I can recognize this fault by simply grabbing it to pick it up by the neck, feels sharp and unsexy in my hand.
.
Not allowing myself to touch the torsion rod yet, so that will mean lowering the saddle.
.
And while I’m at it, I’ve found another nut that I can McGyver (the one I replaced on the 00-15 earlier this year), and I’m going to turn this 12 string around, bass strings on top. I think that’s better for me, I’m weak, I don’t hit it hard enough to get them equally and if I only hit one it ought to be the bass one.
.
I think I can change the existing saddle, like fill my notches and cut new ones. I’ve ordered new blanks for both ends, but I’ve made a mess of this used nut already, I’m going to let someone with the right tools do those for me eventually, when I’m sure it’s worth the expense. This is all just to try to get it playable and configured right on the cheap first. The tuners might still be a week away. 🎶💜🎸
.
/57
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Weird, this job has been charmed. 😇
.
I may treat myself to a new set when the tuners get here, make that easy, all pleasure.
.
still not sure it’s small enough for me, but I’ll try it for a while.
.
audio sometime soon 💜🎶
.
EDIT TO ADD: pics and: I’ve worked out that I can live with the off centre inlays if I simply lose the two furthest from centre and nearest the sound hole, just pop them out and fill the holes, no-one needs those. 👍
.
ANOTHER EDIT TO ADD: I mean, if I put those two on again, where? Properly in the middle and so out of line with the rest, or in line with the rest, wrong on purpose? LOL. I think I’d feel like a fool either way. 🫣😜
.
THIRD EDIT TO ADD: received it June 29th., this morning I found it in tune and I just started playing it, that’s one month. 👍
.
/55
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Nowhere in the whole history of the world did any animal
change its nature because someone TOLD IT TO.
.
No-one changes because of what they’ve been taught, only by the manner of the teaching. It is the manner of human socialization that makes us what we are, not the content of the lessons.
.
Not everyone is going to be a mathematician, not everyone is going to be a linguist, or a doctor - but the vast majority can learn the lessons of the METHOD, of authority, of pain and humiliation, of exclusion and failure.
.
I honestly can’t explain why they thought the abuse would change people when they all thought people were created to be broken, but the problem is that in an evolutionary world it is the abuse that DOES change them and the education that does not.
.
#ND #Psychology #Philosophy #Anarchism #AntisocializationTheory

I think I’ll be back doing that before the tuners get here.
.
Oh yeah, I’m buying the tuners from Framus. Plus bone blanks for the nut and saddle. I’m from Vancouver, I was thinking about American legacy brands, Martin, Gibson.
.
But in ten years I haven’t seen such a creature, they don’t let those ones die here, they get reset and restored.
.
Apparently the luthier industry pays less attention to foreign brands, the euro brand I happened to to fixate on for those skinny laminate
Texan necks, Framus, I’ve found two of those so far, and only one Martin off-brand one - a Vega from Japan, not sure, maybe that’s the same as a Takamine - in these ten years.
.
I hope it’s a model issue and not a brand issue, but the Vega was better than the Revenant, had the big Martin sound.
.
But the new one, this 12 string, it is as close to the ultimare barn find dream as I’ve gotten yet, I think. The price of an American big brand proper twelve string from the ‘60s or ‘70s on Reverb, well, they start at two or three thousand and of course the Martins only go up from there. Not sure if I saw any Gibsons at all.
.
I fear it’s too good not to buy the tuners and a proper bone nut and a properly cut saddle, and that’s what, $300 if I carve the bone bits myself, so maybe it will have been $1,000 all in.
.
It’s been tuned up once a day since the evening before last, the plan is to wait until it settles, stays in tune overnight, and then start testing for buzzes and whatnot, try to finish the setup.
💜🎶
.
/53
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

      In reply to nevent1q…gj9d
_________________________

Busy few days, a few things to tell.
.
1. Did all that, took more wood off the easy end, fretted it back up, lacquered the neck, especially the sides of the fretboard, and I stained and lacquered the bridge, which looked like rosewood but still a little out of place for being kind of blond.
.
2. My pick guard, LOL
I had this idea, use some striped maple veneer for the top layer of a few, but when I stained it with the same stain that seemed good on the neck it went all dark, so I painted it black, but you could still see and feel the grain -
but I aimed the grain across my strum and it sounded like someone was playing the maracas or something, some percussion instrument. If I wasn't hitting the strings hard, my nails on the pick guard was louder!
.
So I put six thick coats of lacquer on it, got it shiny and a lot smoother. Not a structural matter if I want to keep going until it's as smooth as plastic later. But my can of lacquer is getting pretty light.
.
3. Certainly not right yet, but it passed a test it didn't pass before, frets 0 - 5 all play different notes, on all twelve strings. Hasn't been strung up for a day this time yet and it's still very new, that could still change.
.
But I think that means it's just the fret tops now, wood is good, maybe. 🤞 😬
.
Try every fret soon, make a map for final (LOL) finishing.
.
4. Fretting, bloody fretting, I lose sleep before and after fretting about fretting. The handful of fret jobs I've done, I've tried to fit and finish them in place, on the guitar, and I generally destroy the edge of the wood trying to make them safe. I have a fret file for the top edge, but I can't somehow deal with the lower bit, the sharper bit, is it another tool I need?
.
But this time I had the (immediately) previous frets for length, I tried finishing the whole end of the fret first and then installing it. It does seem to soften the bottom of the fret, but I've made a bit of a mess, they don't draw a very straight line, and I haven't used my fret file at the tops yet. I think it will work out but still be a bit of a crooked line looking down the edges.
.
I just tore a whole set out, I want to get it all right before I do that part again, my hands hate that bit.
.
5. Oh - still inlay dots 5, Jeff 0.
They're smooth on top but I missed centre pretty badly, don't ask me how. I cannot seem to stay conscious doing those things. 😜 🙄 🤮 🎶
.
6. Still not my favourite size and shape this neck, but I might be able to play it a bit at the easy end.
.
At some point I stopped thinking about whether I could use it and started trying to save that original neck. 💜
.
/52
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

There’s not much room to work with there, it’s not going to get much smaller anymore.
.
But, for better or worse, the gonzo part is done, it will be tight, but no apparently fatal mistakes have been made yet. Intonation seems good, thank GAWD. 🥹😀
.
Now it’s sort of proper luthiery, shaping that fretboard. Having attempted the gonzo bit twice before, I think I’m stuck with myself as the experienced hand for that, but I wish I had more experience than twice doing the normal part, I see a lot of slow trial end error and broken strings in my immediate future.
.
Then frets, then more of both.
.
First I have to figure out exactly where to remove wood and where to leave it alone. Do I take it all down evenly or do I only sand the thickest bits, where I left the old fretboard thick? - sorry, my brain is wired through my mouth, I only think out loud. Going to work through this here.
.
It’s sort of a conundrum, you take wood off the top, you’re placing your new surface back, from the guitar’s top towards its back - but you’re also weakening that spot, so the strings pull it further forward than before, it may end up being in the same place. I guess the second thing is more evident where it’s thinnest, at the headstock end, the first frets.
.
But it’s true of the whole length too. The action looks 3/16” low now, but it doesn’t need a whole 3/16” off, because it will all move forward a bit too, right?
.
There are reasons it’s a whole trade. 🧐💜
.
If the end bends forward, that’s a quick way to get the required final shape, gets the strings up off the frets, but that’s where I’m ADDING wood, that’s where it’s broken and vulnerable, the last thing I want to do is plan to bend that forward. Ah, I think that settles it, I need to dig out the wood from the third fret up, like that, the rest of the way to the sound hole.
.
Lift them strings more gradually.
.
Still, it’s tight. I fear I’ll need to cheat, leave it less than new in terms of a nice high saddle and a slack truss rod before it’s done, just an intuition, maybe.
.
planning to let it settle for a day or two while I try to think about it more.
.
/46
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

The wheels, the cogs are worn out and they are on all
my old spares too, or it’s a different attachment from wheel to post, and modern wheels are too big, don’t fit between the tuning handle and the post.
.
I guess that answers the spacing question, doesn’t it, if one is smaller, six are smaller too.
.
Framus sells replacement sets, €124, I think it said, so $200 CDN plus shipping, I think that will probably be the only option other than just living with them stiff. I don’t ever want to pay that, but certainly not for Schrodinger’s guitar, I’ll wrestle with that cost if it’s going to work at all.
.
Bought the black paint, the pick guard will be cool.
.
/43
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

My fretwire has arrived.
.
After a lot of self destructive haggling with myself over when to start counting dates because the glue went in over most of a week, I have finally seen the proper and dare I say Aspie-logical proper date to count from and that’s obviously the day the last structural glue went in, and that was last Friday, so as much as I would like to add time for the first bits that went in I can’t and I’m not.
.
My glue has been curing for one week today, and I’ll count Fridays now. (and one week is definitely not long enough, and I was starting to tell myself it had been, “two, REALLY,” and wondering if two was enough - but I’m feeling much better now, as they say).
.
One week, three and a half to go, is how long I’m hoping to wait. But the weather will be a factor, if there’s another record heatwave, I won’t want to test it at forty-five degrees. I made exactly that mistake plus another brainfart and broke the Revenant’s original neck, I forget which summer that was, ‘21, ‘22 maybe.
.
Patience. 🥹💜
.
/42
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I hate to buy a can of paint for what less than 20 square inches, just for a pick guard, I mean, I’ll do it, but I hate it so I’ll do it real slow.
.
I strung it up loose and put it away, cleaned up the whole project, put the tools and the table and the vice away, and now when I can’t wait anymore I’ll tune it and see what happens, see if I’ve straightened the neck enough, see if it stays in one piece. Hopefully no news for at least a week, hopefully longer. 😬🫣
Cheers
/39
.
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

In reply to nevent1q…a75y
_________________________

So in the interest of adding a little strength to this already broken and then pared down neck, I’ve carved a sort of a cleat between the nut end of the fretboard and the tuners, sort of extended the fretboard beyond the nut, and then cut a slot in the new piece for the nut, hopefully that will help.
.
Plus I polished up the logo and lacquered over it to hopefully stop the tarnishing. I had only polished the name when I took this pick, not the banner part yet.
.
And I’ve built a pick guard out of veneers, and the top layer is striped maple like the back and sides, but the same stain I used for the neck turned the pick guard chocolate brown, not in this guitar’s palette at all. I’ll have to paint it black after all.
.
A few little details, that, plus I have enough side dot materal left to do the four on the highest frets, #15- #21, at least on the right handed side.
.
There will be some finishing details but they can wait until the very end, if I can make it work. Now mostly, I have to see how long I can wait for the glue to cure before I string it and carry on setting it all up. The cleat resets the counter for that, I’m at Day One again.
.
EDIT TO ADD: I realized I really have no data, no previous experience of doing these things with these glues, the Revenant was a completely different job and when I did this sort of job before I hadn’t yet heard of hide glue, the Vega’s fretboard is never coming off again. I have no idea how long to wait.
.
I just guessed that I ought to give it a month, but having no real clue and nothing to do, I doubt I’ll be able to wait that long.
I suppose a week after the cleat
thingy (and two weeks after the break and the fretboard) is my guess at a minimum, that’s when waiting will get difficult. That would mean next weekend.
😬🫣🎶
.
/38
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

That one is maybe one inch thick and this one is one and half at this point, I'm pretty sure I'll reach the truss rod slot long before I get this one down to one inch thick.
.
I might settle for one and a quarter to keep the original look and a bit of that will be the front, the fretboard - the one on the little neck has gotten very thin, partly why it's so small - but I don't see how this real neck can ever be as small and lovely as the bolt on, plywood looking one. This is some idiot form of due diligence, but I really want the other neck.
.
So that's the plan, carry on with this until I break it, then do the other thing, even if it has to be the hard way. I can soak the new fretboard off and then sand my way to the joint through the old one which was not coming off that way.
.
Between trying to get the old one off the nice way and now, I've discovered I own an electric sander, it may turn out I used it on the wrong end. 😜
.
EDIT TO ADD:
I mean, it’s a slim chance but if it does survive and work this way, what an ultimate guitar it will be!
I’m shooting for the stars, but I’ll be happy enough to crash on the moon. 💜
/36
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

But the larger issue is see the pic, you can’t squeeze your string spread on a 12 string, there’s no wiggle room.
.
I’ve been thinking I would try to take the sides off of the forward bridge pins, but I just had an incrementally better thought, to lop the tops off of all six of the forward ones.
.
Something has to be done. I don’t have that of course and not sure what to buy, so I tried the white stuff, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll still have that to sesrch for and try.
.
the fretboard is on with that horrible to use Titebond Liquid Hide Glue, so in theory it could still be re-done if need be. Did the repair last night and the fretboard this afternoon and I have other things tomorrow so by the time I’m planning to take the clamps off and mess with it, it will be tomorrow night, everything should be as set as can be.
.
Then I’m back to putting the “e,” strings on, drawing my lines and paring it down to size.
.
It’s a two edged sword: I invest more labour in a perhaps still broken neck, but if I take the time and I do, the glue is probably continuing to dry and cure while I do.
.
And that’s my decision right now: shape it as much as possible - the width is certainly possible - before I test the break again and if that holds, see the amount of flex and start shaping the top.
.
/32
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

If I sand through the fret slots, I have a fret saw, I can just cut them again.
.
I took it off, one time only, took the peak off the under piece one last time and glued the new one on again, and was not miserly with the glue, that ought to be permanent.
.
Thanks for nuthin’ kids 😀
.
/31
#Luthier #Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Seven seems like a long three, but I just hope that number is right!
.
So it means this project is happening sort of backwards, I’m doing my thing with the saddle and the pick guard and I changed the ferrules.
.
I hope that will make the gonzo reset less daunting, knowing that when I reach the end of that long process there won’t still be a bunch of other jobs waiting.
.
Well, a smaller bunch.
.
I have an old plastic nut from one of the student necks, ah, sorry, that was part of the other 12 string too, same as the ferrules, and that’s what I plan to set it up with, the string width is much less, and I don’t feel competent to wing a new 12 string one, that’s going to be my string width. I’d love a proper bone one, hopefully later.
.
The saddle, I have a bone one with six notches in it I made for something else, I don’t recall what, I’m going to try to set it up with that, and there’s two problems with it, the notches may not work and the whole saddle may not be tall enough.
.
I probably should have bought new blanks, but it ain’t free and like I said, I’m not really up to carving them myself. I’ll have to see how things go, figure this out later. I’d hate to pay to farm it out. I hope the old nut works, I worry that the project will stall if I have to order those things. I’m also almost out of the horrible hide glue and best case scenario I’ll have to drive to a bigger town to find some.
.
Tomorrow there is still some
detail I can add in the slot for the saddle and I can cut out the new pick guard from a few layers of maple veneer glued together tonight (the old plastic one is warped). Then I can lacquer the bottom of it and paint the top of it black, but basically I’ll be waiting for that fretboard. 🧐🎸
.
UPDATE: the tracking was wrong, it’s coming now, three days after all!
.
So I’ll have to edit this one out of my super villain back story 😀
.
/25
#Guitar #Framus12StringProject

LOL. Definitely composite.
.
The 00-15M is real wood, but it’s new and it was expensive. Real wood from the ‘60s, I am so chuffed! Gonna kill me if I can’t make it work now.
.
EDIT TO ADD: I guess the takeaway from today’s realization about the project guitar is if you see an old Framus acoustic and the sides aren’t split, grab it 😀💜
.
/24
#Guitar #Framus12StringProject

I think??!?)?
.
my dream was to match the Revenant, my 6 string, but the Revenant is all one sort of grain on the inside and only the stripes on the outside. Only the top is real wood on the 6 string.
.
When I thought I was putting a bolt on block inside, I took a few pics to see what was inside, I wasn’t looking for grain, but I just looked at the pics and the stripes are there! The pic is not great, but I think you can see it.
.
Now I suppose I’m in the market for a 6 string to match my 12 string! LOL
.
Plus it explains why this one hasn’t got cracks and splits all around like the rest of the Framus’ that age do, it’s proper wood!
.
Wow, great find, pressure’s on to make it work.
😀💜💜💜
.
/23
#Guitar #Framus12StringProject

Disassembled the other 12 string just for the ferrules (the steel ring around the tuning pegs).
.
EDIT TO ADD: starting to see a different shape sanded into it between the bass and treble sides, I took more off the treble side than the bass, and got closer to planned shape there too. I’ll try to adjust that tomorrow, get the bass side closer to the plan.
.
It’s something that always happens, I assume because I’m right handed and one eye dominant as well, I mean most people are tilted to one side. Of coarse I tried to get it even already, not sure what I can do to try harder - ah except.
.
I’ll move the vice to the other end of the bench, be working from the other side, use the tendency again. That should be all I can do tomorrow, I don’t expect any parts until the next day.
.
I’m coming around to the new plan, getting excited. It’s a long process, but again, not as long as converting it to a bolt on neck, and s/b a far more desirable result. 👍💜
.
/22
#Guitar #Framus12StringProject

In reply to nevent1q…epl3
_________________________

I sure wish I could remember the exact shape of what I added to the Vega between the neck and the fretboard.
.
All I remember for sure is a lot of painful trial and error. I was shaping the under bit, gluing the fretboard on and stringing it up to see what the final shape was, unstringing it again, stripping the top fretboard off again and then adjusting the shape. I was simply doing, over and over, I didn’t have much of a theory.
.
I would like to shorten that process, so I’m theorizing and trying to remember.
.
I know the fretboard was thicker on the body, above the 14th. fret, and it needed a high saddle. I don’t think that’s completely avoidable, but I think I could raise that part a bit less.
.
That part looks flat, unaffected by end of life, I mean of coarse, there’s no neck there at all, so it doesn’t want the convex curve there, my arc has to end before that, but how do I transition my convex piece to straight? I think all I can do is centre my under piece thickest in the middle of the neck, like 6th. fret, and have a more abrupt curve over those first six (done this morning, with nothing off at the 6th., probably that’s too thick, too much curve overall, and I’ll be taking it down) and a longer curve from there to the sound hole.
.
I don’t feel that’s really right, but that’s going to be my starting point.
.
As to theory, partly the partial
second fretboard simply fills the space created between the fretboard and the strings by end of life stress, but also, the extra layer of rosewood is strong, and resists that stress going forward.
.
There are issues, the neck gets thicker, I am forever tempted to remove wood from the back of the neck to compensate, but I fear that I took too much off the back of the Vega’s neck, got too close to the truss rod. I suppose I’ll never know if the Vega breaks. It will be a pity, it’s basically a Martin D-18. Sounded fantastic.
.
And this 12 string’s neck is wide, but it’s thin and flat, there is no wood to take off the back there, but I guess that’s the same as saying it’s thin enough already and I won’t need to.
.
/21
#Guitar #Framus12StringProject
