I want this library because I want assertions to run in release mode anyways.

C is kinda a dying language. regardless of whether this is a good or a bad thing or any of our opinions on this, fewer and fewer people are learning C. the people who *would* have been learning C to do systems programming are now learning rust.
writing it in rust significantly increases the number of people who will be able to contribute to it in the future

also, looking at the repo history, their original reason for the rewrite was bc they wanted to make it cross-platform and rust makes it easier to do that
