I do not know, of course, what the pope wanted to say or what is in his mind. However, I certainly agree with the feeling that people behave towards AI/ML/NN/BS as a cult, and maybe, yes, as a religion. And the scariest part, for me, is that many colleagues, who, as scholars, should have a good amount of critical thinking ability, do the same all the time. I could give numerous first-hand examples about this, but it may get too specific. I will limit myself to saying that, in one case I found particularly shocking, an assistant professor literally told me that it doesn't matter that his method cannot explain what is happening in a certain system, because it is machine learning and therefore the final result will be correct. Even if we will be unable to say what it is, what has happened, how it happened, and what it means. I am *scared* of the cult that has been created around this shit, and I mean it.

with the premise that I agree with the post in principle and certainly in spirit, there is still one big problem. Some companies (and some universities) require the use of authenticating apps that only run on "official" Android/iOS. Some banking applications have a similar requirement. What is a viable way to work around this, if there is one?

I don't know the app, but if they operate also in the EU, they are up for some serious thrashing. This will easily violate all sort of GDPR rules.

Also, I expect that there will be a market on incel and manosphere forums for these data, unavoidably attracting hatred towards the women who used the app, and this is truly scary.

Also, the whole thing is a preview of what is about to come in the EU, UK and US, thanks to the respective "online safety acts". Basically the Ashley Madison case all over again, but on steroids.

so, just tried in Bulgaria, and all search engines show "impeach Trump" as a suggestion. Then, I tried connecting via a server in Illinois, and the Google suggestions in Firefox blanked out just as you say. Interestingly, all other search engines were fine. Microsoft Bing, however, showed "Impeach President Harris 2025" as one of the suggestions, which I found... interesting.

it's already happening. I recently participated in a scientific conference, and I met a colleague who has been all his working life in the US. It turns out he just moved back to his state of origin in Europe. Several other people in my field have done the same. Of course, the numbers I'm talking about are small, so this could well be merely anecdotal evidence, but then again, the field of science is not really large, so I believe these people are already important indicators.

I think there is one single big difference. If Russia said they wanted Greenland, the whole of the EU would laugh at them. This is not the case with the US. You can't compare US and Russia, there's a world of difference in between! And especially, in Europe we know quite well that we do what the US say. If a matter is not fundamental, then OK, we do what we want. But if someone disobeys an order on something of strategic importance, then they usually don't last long. See, for instance, Enrico Mattei or Aldo Moro, for what concerns Italy.

as I already replied once to the same post, possibly true, but the means is wrong, since the only thing AI can do is imitation, and therefore nothing new can come out of it, whether new knowledge or new art. If then one goes and checks how purposefully biased many of the publications with the basic methods used are, it becomes anguishing that so many people believe AI is the magic of the future.
