While this is true it is also true that Linux is a generic set of tools and not an business office centric software suite.

Before you mentioned selecting multiple archives and sending them to the printer in one go via right-click menu in the file explorer I had never seen anybody using that functionality and never had occurred to me to do such a thing.

Here I wonder if that functionality is provided by Office via a dll plugin to the file explorer, because windows won't be able to print shit out of an office document if Office is not installed first.

I will check that later.

What you need to get your head around is that you are using a collection of individual programs and need to learn their behaviour.

In windows is the same, you have a program running your desktop and file manager (explorer.exe), another program that runs the control panel control.exe, another that runs a notepad (notepad.exe) you are so used to windows hiding all these details from you that you do not realise what is happening.

In Linux some environments are good enough that you can go by the same as in windows and not care what the underlying thing is doing, but in Linux helps to know you are running Thunar, Caja, Nemo or any other file manager because those are different programs and not everybody uses them.

What is good about understanding all of this is that you can put together your own collection of programs that you like.

You do not like eom to view images? Ok use Ristretto, or any other image viewer, you do not like Leafpad as a notepad? use SciTE, and so on.

If I can give you a single piece of advice, abandon the idea that Linux is a 1:1 replacement for windows and rather than think: "windows has this or that" think "how can I achieve X with Linux". And have patience, solve one issue at the time and if you discover an issue is many issues combined, solve each issue independently.

That is a loop and echoes the name of any matching file in the loop.

Your problem is that even such a basic thing is impaired due to your absolute lack of understanding of what makes it possible in the first place.

I will try to give you some insight, but you have to put the effort:

The terminal is a window running a text interface shell that is also an interpreter (it has a small programming language)

This concept alone is something you should study, it means:

It can run programs or let you code some glue to join programs together

The above loop uses the shell's language to create a loop where each file ending in .pdf is sent to the echo command, the echo command outputs its name back to the shell

If rather than using "echo" you do:

for f in *.pdf ; do lpr "$f" ; done

You will be send all PDFs to the printer via the "lpr" command.

Again, you have to put the effort.

Linux is not perfect, distros are not perfect, both are made by people who make mistakes and have their own interests and reasons for doing things, news at 9.

All I can tell you is that here I am, 15 years after moving from Windows and the only big change I had to do in these 15 years is move from Ubuntu to Arch, I loved Ubuntu, I made my own frankenlinux of all the LTS versions and stopped using it because I do not want to deal with snaps.

All my scripts work fine, all my apps work including some non-free, all the Windows apps I need run in Wine (truth be told they are all old from the NT/2000/XP era) and all my games run in Proton save a couple I haven't bothered to check.

If I was to try to run the same old engineering software I used to run in Windows 95/NT/2000/XP back when I still did engineering work, in Windows 10 half of it won't work because the installers are 16 bit and 16 bit doesn't run on modern 64 bit windows, and I am sure I would have to spend hours tampering with the registry. I also have hardware that doesn't work on windows anymore but still does in Linux, fuck I have computers that can't run Windows 10 or Windows 11 and run modern Linux just fine.

None of this proves anything of course your mileage may vary.

Yes you can, you can have a complex application running on any Linux, plenty of commercial stuff works that way, for example go to realvnc.com and download their VNC viewer and marvel.

I myself have done non-trivial applications like that in the past, the truth is that these types of applications are a rarity in Linux because for many decades Linux had no desktop presence and hence not many companies made them.

The distro/linux philosophy is to avoid building applications on that manner because it forces un-sharable libraries in memory and it requires code-warehousing which is considered a potential security issue as those applications are hard to patch in the future.

Again, go read why the decisions were made, you could disagree with them and like windows more, but there is a rational logic to all of them wether you agree or not.

Also just say you do not like Linux and we save a lot of time.

One issue people often overlook is that this "connectivity with the entire world everywhere all the time" is a 2000+ thing and UNIX comes from the 70s, (heck Windows is not more successful in this regard either) so certain assumptions from back then do not apply today and have ended causing security headaches, the fact that things are immensely more complex now in terms of expectations of software and hardware do not help either and in hindsight everything is easy to solve.
