A sudden influx of "the public" into open social communication systems always follows the same pattern. First everyone acts like drunken monkeys, then some people catch on to ettiquette but it shifts to being more tolerant of a lot of bad behavior.

Then the money shows up. First, as spam. Then as more and more organized advertising campaigns. Eventually companies start buying up the medium, then they slice it up (by adding proprietary features that all the teeming masses want), then they wall it off.

It would go exactly like the September that never ended. It would go exactly like XMPP. It would go exactly like RSS.

Humans can't sustain these things at scale; The existence of nations is basically our attempts at preserving some fundamental culture. Whether they have succeeded is up to you.
