Keeping software up to date is a great thing, but I also need a good level of stability. And so, having the easy update rollback is a fantastic thing.

I used to play with like the Ubuntu beta versions, but I would always play with them inside of virtual machines while leaving my hardware on something that was stable.

And I play with beta software on my phone all the time, but that's at the application level, not the operating system level.

This is actually my second time trying it. I tried it about this time last year but bounced off of it because an application I needed did not have a package created for it and I didn't have the ability to build it from source. Now that application ships both a Flatpak version and an app image, so I can use it.

NixOS is definitely not the easiest thing to learn, but from everything I've read or heard, once you get it set up the way you need, you'll never want to go back.

NixOS is not an immutable distribution, but it has a lot of the benefits that are commonly associated with immutable systems.

I have been using #Linux since 2011 and have never been on the latest Linux kernel at the time. As an example #NixOS 26.05 came with 6.18.x family while the newest stable is the 7.3 family. I made a one-line change to my configuration file, and now I am on the latest stable kernel, and will continue tracking the latest stable kernel.

The 6.18 family was originally released in, like, late 2025, and while I've been getting point releases, like, 6.18.56 released October 11th, that's still not the newest kernel family, obviously.

I did not want to see the console while I was booting my system, so I got Plymouth set up. The real problem is that my Plymouth only gives me a gray screen with three dots while booting up. But while shutting down, it's taking the custom theme I set which was "rings". Something about the INIT RD not being built with it or something.

I might play with it some more later, but it's fine for now as is since I no longer see the console when booting up or shutting down.

#NixOS #Linux

So after it's three days old, or one week old, or two weeks old, or four weeks old, or some sort of custom amount between one day and four weeks old, or something like that.

That way you're not keeping excess history around forever, but yet you have something to go back to if you need it within a certain small timeframe.

Another example is that ProtonMail automatically deletes emails in the spam and trash folders after 30 days. So you don't have to worry about them. When you delete an email, you just delete it and you know that 30 days later it's going to be gone.

What incredibly wise advice. And how sad that it has to be pointed out in such a way.

quoting
nevent1q…l999
What's normal anymore? Honestly, I don't think most of us could tell you. We've been taught that normal is whatever the majority happens to be doing, so the word has drifted right along with the crowd. If most people doomscroll till 2am, that's normal. If most marriages fall apart, normal. If nobody on the street knows their neighbor's name, that's normal too.

That isn't where the word came from. Normal comes from norma, the square a carpenter held against his work to see if it was true. It was a standard. You measured yourself against it and found out where you were off.

So if we actually sat down and agreed on what a normal human being looks like, I think we'd land somewhere pretty old fashioned. A man who isn't easily swayed. Who loves his wife sacrificially, the kind of love that actually costs him something. Who raises his kids to be thinkers and innovators instead of followers. Who works with a joy that makes people ask him, why are you so happy to work? Who isn't living a constant life of chasing his own pleasure. Who helps his neighbors, checks in on people, and has a couple of friends he can talk to about anything.

Most people would call that guy rare. Some would call him naive. A few would assume he's hiding something. That should bother us more than it does, because that man used to be the baseline. He was who you were supposed to grow up into.

I don't think this gets fixed by a movement. It gets fixed one house at a time. Love your wife like it costs you. Talk to your kids like they have minds of their own. Go to work and actually be glad you're there. Call the friend you haven't heard from in a while. Keep at it long enough and people will start asking you why, and you'll get to tell them.

If it works with gadget bridge on Android, that is really great. However, in the future I do intend to switch to a phone running #NuraEco (formerly PostMarketOS) so I wonder if there's a way to use it on that as well. Because if I'm understanding correctly at least, Gadget Bridge is an Android app.

The main reasons for not wanting a smartwatch for me is, first of all, that it has another screen that, since I am blind, I cannot really see, and they are thick little bastards, and without having a screen, the battery life would last longer.

In my previous life, before I cared so much about using open source as much as possible, I did try a smartwatch and was rather unimpressed and didn't end up keeping it around. That would have been back in something like the 2017 timeframe.

I also had a Fitbit tracker that was touch sensitive but did not have a screen on it and so when you touched it a number of lights would light up to show you what the battery level was and that's the only thing you could see from the device itself and that was fine.

I was also having web browsing issues where sometimes I would get unable to connect messages like the website wasn't reachable, and I thought that it was because they saw that I was coming from a Tor exit node and refused to respond or something like that, but perhaps it was actually telling the truth, and something with TorVPN may have actually been the problem.

I had never used invizible as a whole device VPN before, so I thought it was normal and it turns out it may not be.

The recent Ledger hack ($93M+ drain) just put the final, humiliating nail in Zcash's coffin.

A hacker tried to wash the stolen funds. They ran them through Tornado Cash, then shoved them straight into Zcash’s highly-marketed “shielded pool” to “disappear” them. What happened? On-chain analytics followed them in real time. 108 out of 108 exits were fully demixed and matched. Down to the exact zatoshi. Every single lot was identified, tracked back out the far side, traced to cross-chain swaps, and pinpointed to exchange-bound wallets. Not one other exit from the pool matched the patterns. The “privacy” of Zcash’s shielded pool offered exactly 0% protection. Zero.

Why? Because Zcash is a fundamentally broken, opt-in privacy sandbox. When 95%+ of your network is transparent and your shielded pool is a tiny, ghost-town backyard, fingerprinting becomes trivial. Timestamps, lot sizes, and behavior pattern matching will de-anonymize you instantly.

“Opt-in” privacy is just a security theater, not privacy. It is a honey pot for chain-analysis firms like Chainalysis and Bitquery to test their tracking toys. But let’s be honest: We shouldn’t be surprised. Zcash is working exactly as intended. As Zcash founder Zooko back-pedaled and openly admitted in 2017: “I think we can successfully make Zcash too traceable for criminals... but still completely private & fungible.”

Spoiler: You cannot make something “too traceable” for some without making it fully traceable for everyone. They built backdoors into their philosophy, and today we see the fruits of that compliance-first cowardice. It’s a surveillance coin masquerading as a privacy coin.

#Monero never asks for permission, never complies, never offers “optional” shielding so you can appease regulators. In Monero, privacy is the only option. No opt-in or transparent “T-addresses” or fallback. Every transaction, every sender, every recipient, and every amount is obscured by default, for everyone, forever. No analytics firm can fingerprint your exit, because there is no “transparent” exit to map back to. There is no pool, because the entire blockchain is the pool. It is genuinely fungible.

Zcash is a corporate, VC-backed, compliant tracking ledger with a “private” sticker slapped on the box. And this was after several times, over like a year time span of trying it.

My main use case is that I want to synchronize my Monero wallet with my Monero node, and on Tor, I get 5 MBPS. On I2P, I get 40 KBPS.

I could possibly shorten my I2P tunnels to one-hop tunnels, but then that completely kills the privacy of using I2P, which I don't want to do. Especially not when I can get 5 Mbps through Tor, where I've got the six hops between the client and the server.

You set it up as a regular client like you would use to browse the Tor network but then in the Tor configuration file you specify that you have hidden services available to publish.

hmmmm. kinda considering setting up my own #Tor #Nostr relay just for the hell of it.

every relay i am aware of is on the cucknet where you have to rent your own domain and ICANN can just pull the rug on your relay.

i am running my client over Tor, but connecting to cucknet relays. may be time to close the loop.

And it's like, well, until somebody makes a good accessible nostr client, there's no way to avoid it. Monostr has now replaced Primal on my device and it has been uninstalled.

And my question is, does it support proof of work for note publishing?

I would love to have a client that could publish proof-of-work with my notes so that I could publish to relays that will only accept proof-of-work notes and potentially have the option to not show any note that doesn't have proof-of-work attached unless I am following them.
