I have this very persistent "company" of sorts claiming they have a "family office" that wants to invest in Depfu. They contacted me with, I think, two different persons (personas?) with wildly different email addresses, which look scammy and don't have any websites attached. I don't even have a company name to research their credibility.

So I'm assuming it's a scam, but what kind? Is the family office a "Nigerian Price's" family?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I *really* don't want European Hyperscalers to be a thing. Hyperscalers are at best a market/regulation failure and at worst a huge risk to create another one of these "too big to fail" scenarios.

I want a sane and healthy landscape of small- to midsize competitors in the hosting landscape.

It makes everything more robust and reliable.

Honestly, I'm not in a good place right now. I have invested a lot of time into this community and this technology. Not as much as some others, sure, but substantial enough that it defines large parts of my professional career.

I'm having a conference to organize and meetups to attend and software to write and all of that and none of that seems to make any sense right now.

Big "I didn't survive 2024 for this fucking shit" energy. And no idea how to deal with it.

What I do know is this: Ruby Central (npub1adh…8lgh) keeps putting out absolutely incredibly terrible communication. Their latest one with the incident "timeline" is full of between-the-lines accusations and insinuations.

It feels to me like this is an org in paranoia mode. This is not a good mode of operation. Goddamnit, RC, we want to be able to trust you. We want to be able to help you, even.

I guess one way to read this (and I'm not saying it's the correct way, but I think it's plausible from what we know) is that the actions of Ruby Central (npub1adh…8lgh) on the 18th of Sept did exactly what we've been accusing them of and exactly the opposite of what they've been saying: it made rubygems considerably less safe.

The one thing you cannot have is a situation where you don't actually know (for 12 days!) who has access to what and why.

People who moan about Europe not having a Google or Meta. Because of regulation and shit and because (of course) we in Europe don't like success.

It's always funny, because to me, the system is working. I don't want an unregulatable, too-big-to-fail hot mess of a company in Europe.

This may not be 100% intentional and I am not saying that EU regulations are without fault.

I just become increasingly suspicious of people who advocate for slashing them.
