I've just started watercolor again. When I was young, I painted all the time, took art classes in high school, president of the art club, all kinds of awards and accolades. My art teacher even pulled strings to get me a full scholarship. She sent me on a tour of the art dept at the University of Texas and they scared the hell out of me. I turned it down and life got in the way.

I get much from them even though they aren't real tutorials. I think that's his business model. The videos are teasers to get you to buy his products, which apparently, contain real tutorials. The big brush video was actually very instructional. I still can't bear it when a smaller brush will do the job better. I think he's a plein air purist and is rushing to finish outside rather than perfect details later in studio.

He's got a video about wide brushes. I need to watch that.

The average annual inflation used to be about 1.4%. My take is that if you don't get a raise at least commensurate with inflation, you're taking a pay cut. I had a boss tell me one year that I wasn't getting a pay raise for reasons I won't get into. I explained this concept to him and that if he moved forward with his plan, I was looking for a job. I got my raise.

I have no idea what the announced all inflation rate is these days. I imagine it is higher than 1.4%.

Another personal rule is to never take a counteroffer. I never have but I watched others do it. I've never seen it last long term. Eventually that person was gone. It changes your relationship with your employer when you were going to leave and you were leaving for a reason and it probably wasn't just your salary.

My personal rule is to not discuss it with others. First of all, I'm older, have had decades of raises so a young person is most likely going to be the loser in the comparison. Either way, there's a loser and I don't want it to be me. The way I see it, it's none if their business. We all came to our employment with a deal and we were happy enough with the deal to stay. Here in USia, you can buy one and do it all yourself. Lots of people do and screw it up, venting all their refrigerant to atmosphere. I have the know how, a vacuum pump and a flaring setup. I prefer to hire a pro.

Everyone wants everybody else's trees trimmed but nobody wants their trees trimmed. When people found out I worked for the electric utility, I would get an ear full.
