My last few servers have had names from Norse mythology (Brunhilde, Valkyrie). Should I name the next one Mjölnir or Conky 2000? (Poll ↓)

With some fanfare, Google switched my phone assistant to AI. My first question was "what is the outdoor temperature" (a regular ask). It answered with what I'm guessing is the average temperature across the United States. 🙄

I immediately switched back to assistant classic and asked it the same thing. 71°, which is correct and what I wanted to know.

Great job Google, no notes. ✨

Getting word that several of my close friends were laid off from JPL today.

They've worked there for 25+ years.

As senior engineers they had survived a massive layoff earlier this year.

It goes without saying that NASA is losing irreplaceable institutional knowledge, and these "budget cuts" will cost us dearly in the long run.

What are we doing?

Finally got around to doing a project I bought the materials for 2 years ago - putting pinstripes on this big reflective window so (hopefully) birds won't fly into it. 🪶 #ADHD

I know an accountant who still laments having to give up her DOS-based software for this exact reason. Formerly she could hit a handful of menu keys from memory and the software would take as long as it needed to ingest them. Now it's point-click-wait, point-click-wait...

THANK YOU! I'm not usually anticapitalism but in this case hell yes. These companies (*cough* MS *cough*) "survive" (derogatory) by making us buy the same thing over and over again, but they can't make it better so they just change it which typically makes it worse. The latest example is of course pouring "AI" all over everything. There's got to be a better way.

Thanks for this. I've read some reviews concerned that the firmware is closed / cloud-based - any thoughts? (Sincerely asking; I'm not militantly one way or the other as long as the implementation is competent, which is a rare thing these days.)

It's probably a good thing I don't have stupid money because I wouldn't have it for long. 💸

(Growing up in Hollywood I heard stories about this rotting under a tarp at 20th. I'm glad it's finally getting its belongs-in-a-museum moment.)
