“a guy with a truck” and I replied with a story about a man in our town who is THE guy with a truck. Knowing about him kind of defines “community” for me.

Today I have another example, this time it’s a vendor’s tent, the kind that provides shade at a farm stand, etc.

ICE wanted to build a detention center in Chester NY a few months ago, public pressure kept it from happening. Now they want to build one just outside the town of Newburgh, so there was a large rally against it this evening. Rep Pat Ryan and several community leaders spoke.
During the rally, we got word that an ICE officer had that very hour (!) shot and killed an immigrant in a nearby town.

every day there’s so much bad news that I want to tell you about a bike “race” I lost this morning.

I was cycling home from an errand when I came upon this guy. We raced a short distance and he beat me!
Head down, eyes straight ahead—he was very focused, his legs were moving so fast! I didn’t mind losing at all. We high-fived at the end.

Important detail: he was a preschooler on a balance bike, his mom was thrilled that I played along. 🤣🚲

I’ve been reading other responses and I don’t know if we’re talking net assets, or income per year.

A joint income of $100K-150K/year allows a very comfortable life, but even modest houses are worth $$$ because the market has gone up.

I haven’t seen anyone talk about long-term care yet, which can easily cost $100K/year, and you might need it for several years. EEK!

I realized quite awhile ago that map reading has always been easy for me but I chalk it up to being a musician. I played the cello professionally for a very long time, and even though I don’t perform much any more, I still know the “map” of strings and notes. In order to play efficiently, you have to know how to get to the next note from the one you’re currently playing—similar to knowing locations of streets and houses in relation to your current location.

I’ve noticed a lot of places switching over to “cash only” which is perplexing as we don’t have an actual bank in town anymore. The last one closed a couple months ago, and even they didn’t have cash on hand, just an ATM (with limits on withdrawals)

other places are slipping in a surcharge for credit transactions without saying anything, and of course now there are “convenience fees” everywhere too.

I hope the repair solves the problem!

I performed at the Kennedy Center about 3 nights a week for 35 years as part of the National Symphony Orchestra. When I read about the “name change” I was livid, but not for long. Of course donny has no right to do such a thing, and it’s sickening that they are already changing signage—very fast work!

But the reason I’m not more bothered is that the insultomaniac has no sense about art. He can’t write a good sentence, doesn’t play an instrument, can’t even sing the Star Spangled Banner.

I go past this house frequently, today it has a sign out front. But I’ve decided to not feel outrage. Instead I’m going to write a “dear neighbor” letter, along the lines of

“thank you for reminding all of us that we need to stop the epidemic of gun violence. Common sense gun reforms are at the top of nearly everyone’s list, because we’re all sick of gun violence. None of us should worry about being gunned down every time we are in a crowd.”

As our country shakes and crumbles, I’ve been spending more time in the garden. An hour a day is about average for me, and I’ve made great strides over the summer.

My latest project is to remove an entire bed of pachysandra. It’s a great ground cover—filling a large area so that weeds don’t grow. However….the time has come for something else.

The roots are a solid mat and when I pull on one, it’s connected to a very long runner. Tedious work.

Partly that’s because I may have to miss a day or two before the end of the month, and partly because I sent the same text to six different electeds yesterday.
