Had to use a non-hardened browser to interact with muggle websites this week and my usual fallback is the chromium based browser, Vivaldi. Sometimes I'll use ungoogled Chromium as well.

Normally when using these browsers for the first time in many weeks, I forget that they don't respect the middle button paste buffer in the URL bar, or anywhere I guess. Today I was annoyed enough to see if I can find a work around.

As it turns out it's a GTK gsetting:

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-enable-primary-paste

If that returns false then do a:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-enable-primary-paste true

Now you can middle click paste in Chromium based browsers!

For the uncertain, this works regardless of whether you are running a GTK based desktop or not (i.e. do this if you are running Plasma, LXQt, CoW, whatever also).

Gee, what am I going to do with myself for the rest of the day now?

#Chromium #Browser #Web #Vivaldi #gsettings #GTK #MiddleButtonPaste #SandingSharpEdgesForFunAndProfit

The errors that remain seem to be related to auth/polkit stuff. That and the kde specific app id unknown/missing errors which _might_ be related to same.

Maybe I'll investigate further tomorrow. Bordering on tiresome now. Ha.

Another full day of building my wife's garden folly today. Laid another skid of patio slabs, probably be the last for this season. This is a holiday long weekend in Canada (Thanksgiving) so the rest of the weekend will be visiting family and such.

I do love those moments when there is no man made sounds and I can hear the ravens doing raven things off in the distance. They haven't visited me directly in a several months.

No eagle spottings today, although a humming bird (late!) was really interested in my hat for a bit.

It's starting to get too cold for this kind of work.

Finally turned attention to getting Immich up and running tonight. I like it, seems snappy enough with tens of thousands of photos imported.

The Immich website has a handy form driven page for generating a docker compose file so it took like 30 seconds to get it running once mutated to follow my way of doing things on my server (persistent storage, naming, cert proxy, etc).

I struggled a bit with using the Immich command line tool to import my photo collection and in the process of trying to figure out why --recursive didn't work, stumbled upon the immich-go project on github. It's also a command line tool and works very well; immediately was able to recursively import photos, etc. Compiles cleanly on Alpine Linux (ofc, it's just golang).

Immich-go has a migrate function that allows you to connect to one Immich server and copy the files to another Immich server (but no delete source as far as I could tell).

I set up a second Immich instance on a different port and started to use the migrate function to finally start moving all the photos of my computer electronics and vehicle technical projects out of the whole household's photo collection. My wife will appreciate that. Ha. Managed to split out 2026-2025, only ~25 more years to go. Ugh.

Anyway, Immich (the server) and Immich-go (the CLI tool) are cool. Recommended.

Fun!

#immich #immichgo #AlpineLinux #cli #photography #photos #HomeLab #SelfHosting #SelfHosted

It's just really annoying!

I'm more annoyed that Shotwell from repo doesn't work with HEIC, it's much "lighter" for just browsing/snarfing images than Darktable so that's kinda been my main casual interface to photos. Gwenview is just when stuff gets moved to project directories really so not a huge pain.

Onwards...

No time to play with CoW today but did log back into the machine after running around on my main box (Plasma) all day.

Swaylock needs some themeing but once in and seeing the partially modified twm I was working on yesterday it gave me a big smile. Simple and sharp!

Anyway, still going to pick at this in the background. Need to figure out how to manage minimized apps and launching and stuff using waybar, waybar-wlr-taskbar, cowiconbox, sway*, and friends.

So customizable! You can make your own desktop paradigms for the most part. I love it! Ha.

Is there a way to create animations? Something like a Picom add-on but for Wayland?

I installed Budgie (iirc 10.10.2) on my test box just to have a look - launching from sddm gives a login loop so I'll ignore that for now as that's more time to debug than I'm willing to invest ATM.

Fun!

#Linux #RunBSD #CoW #RiverWM #Wayland #WaylandDesktop #Sway

I have a lot of ancient experience with fvwm so CoW kinda has a soft spot for me at this time.

For OS I'm running Alpine. I switched to Alpine more over systemd than AI, but it still applies at this point. The bit of AI debate Alpine has had has been quite wishy-washy but I'm content to sit in pattern for now.

PostmarketOS (downstream of Alpine) has a strong anti-AI stance so ... I guess that's an option if for no other reason than perhaps downstream vetting.

You know about Elementary. Their moving to immutable is off-putting to me. We discussed Chimera, seems like a good fit for me but I like the larger support/scale that Alpine has - for now.

At this point I won't make any final decisions but am keeping my options open.

I'm not going to look into the BSDs further for "reasons" as i'm not convinced they won't be as encrusted in the coming months/years similarly to the Linux kernel. Well, not NetBSD - but I'm not ready to go that far back into paleocomputing at this time.

$0.02

<posted from Alpine with CoW plus Waterfox flatpak>

I've been fussing around with Labwc a bit. The out of the box Labwc config on Alpine is very minimal. Labwc uses Openbox themes, but before I go down that rabbit hole I want to explore CoW.

Following the build instructions "bouncing ball" on both the river and CoW Codeberg pages resulted in success with CoW selectable and launch-able in sddm with zero dramas.

Clicking on the empty desktop and getting the minimalist cow (fvwm!) menu to appear for the first time was a bit of a comfy old shoe moment. Ha.

Thanks River and [@thomasadam](https://bsd.network/@thomasadam ) !

Now the fun, hard, and time consuming part: making CoW look the way I want it to look and selecting tools to flesh out the rest of the desktop.

I did go looking for some of my old fvwm configs in my code repo but I guess I never saved my desktop configs - just my carputer stuff. 2008 was a long time ago. Oh well.

Fun!

#CoW #CompositorOnWayland #RiverWM #River #Labwc #Linux #AlpineLinux #RunBSD #fvwm #sddm

My keyboard is on the desk in front/under the right large screen.

My two main screens are on monitor arms from behind and the small screen placed in this orientation gives mouse navigation a smooth, natural usage path.

I'm right handed so this works for me - for now.

      Latest thoughts on mobile devices...

* Done with Android. Google has killed any cachet it had with their recent developer registration and side loading BS. I won't waste any more time on Android messing around with embedded stuff for my projects.

* iOS phone that I currently own (13) will be my last. Apple is just as bad as Google, will leave this platform also, even if for the last 4-5 years it was a sort of pseudo-privacy respecting mobile safe space. It was all BS and is about to get worse.

* I really haven't used phone apps beyond Firefox (and now Waterfox and Librewolf since Firefox turned) in the set 10 years or so. Won't miss anything from this perspective. I've never trusted the platforms with my payment systems so I won't miss "tap phone to pay" either. CarPlay/AAuto is convenient but a huge privacy leak.

* My next phone will be something that takes calls/sms and can create a hotspot and does effectively nothing else; a decent camera that doesn't have AI BS ruining the images would be nice. Device suggestions appreciated.

* I'll probably start researching small, flip convertible, touchscreen laptops that can act as a tablet and pair it with the phone. The device needs to be able to run Linux and/or BSD (of course). The older Lenovo Tab 11 I have now is serviceable in the meantime until I find a decent lightweight convertible.

* Would consider a Linux phone but I don't care enough about this segment to put up with being a beta/gamma tester. Also, lot of money for an uneven and potentially bad experience.

* If we consider new cars a mobile device <wat!?> then I'm done with them as well. So much so that I recently bought a 2000 Volvo S70 5spd for my wife as a winter beater. No mobile telemetry there - unlike my son's new Toyota GR86.

* While navigating all this, boycotting U.S. tech/manufacturers.

* There's no fun/joy in any of this stuff any more. #RantyMcRantFace

Pretty tall order. Makes the further case for throwing the phone into the crusher and migrating from "digital man" to "analog man" and fleeing into the woods/workshop. Ha.

#Mobile #Android #ios #Apple #google #DigitalNomad #Linux #RunBSD #TMI

Been doing some exploring of alternate operating systems again.

Haiku is pretty cool. It has a lot of the default sort of apps the normal Linux ecosystem has but it is missing some things like LibreOffice for example. Or perhaps it exists outside of the default repos - didn't get that far yet.

Just installed NetBSD in a VM. As an out of the box desktop experience it is pretty much raw dogging 1990s X11. Ha. Cool, it is what it is.

If I were to spend any time on NetBSD as a desktop sysadmin terminal I'd have to do something else like fvwm or perhaps openbox (lxqt?) exists. That's some exploration for another day.

Obviously these both have their strengths elsewhere but as a seat of the pants look this is how they struck me. I may spend more time digging into NetBSD. I have some embedded appliance type projects to play around with but at this point am still all in on Alpine.

Fun!

There was a conversation on here a week (or two++?) ago that ranged into the "good ol' days" of optimizing DOS 640Kb memory using emm386 and the like with MS and DR DOS etc.

I kept thinking about that conversation and invariably started thinking about old windowing systems like GEOS on the C64 and Desqview on DOS.

Anyway, that led to wondering about text windowing systems beyond what you can do with tmux or screen or whatever.

Twin looks quite interesting. Was at the "local" computer store last night (Canada Computers Kanata) and while searching for what I was looking for I stumbled across the keyboard display.

The keyboard I've been using for couple of years has been an e-waste thingy lying around from an old Dell pre-built. It's serviceable and perfectly fine but...

The Logitech G-something-or-other that I had before that was too expensive given the short lifespan it had so I never got around to replacing it with like-for-like.

Anyway, I saw a really cool looking "cheap and cheerful" Chinese doo-hickey and rolled the dice (DAREU EK106 Pro).

It has a great feel and seems like decent build quality for C$66. It feels better than the Logitech too (materials, design).

It's always hard to tell if brands you don't know in your local store are worth a damn but I give this brand and model a thumbs up. I really like it after pounding on it all morning.

At 1:15 AM normal people are fast asleep for several hours sawing logs.

Meanwhile, I'm fawking around in the cellar with cover off the main electrical panel that connects the house to the barn and garage and trying to figure out the maximum number of amps that can be pushed between the buildings. I was hoping the line to the barn was over-spec'ed for the current 60A allocated. It isn't (sad face).

Why do I do this to myself? It's not the end of the world, could run nfs on the nas, but I don't wanna. Ha. Otherwise there is not really a a show stopper to using FreeBSD on the desktop in my case.

It's disappointing that all these operating system teams are afraid to make a statement one way or the other due to a fear of "missing out" or whatever it is that is stopping them one way or the other.

That shows a lack of organization in the lesser case and a lack of character in the greater case, IMO.

For me, it would be kind of reducing utility to in terms of hardware support to end up in the same place.

I like OpenBSD conceptually but I find the community support off-putting the few interactions I've had/seen and it has even less hardware and software support.

NetBSD just doesn't fit what I need.

Elementary is a "safe place" currently, IMO (systemd notwithstanding 😜).

I'd like to see them re-baseline on Debian Testing the way Tuxedo is doing but that's unlikely to happen any time soon, if ever. And it's certainly not a reason not to use e. Ha.

I ran e for like 3-4 years back in the late-teens and it did everything I wanted at that time.

Chimera uses the FreeBSD userland, is very snappy, etc. Small dev team but I haven't seen any issues in the ~2 years I've been paying attention to it. No systemd.

These to me are the two standout Linux distros of the moment re: slop.

I'm running Alpine these days and they are kind of wishy-washy on the slop thing it seems. There's a lot of inertia for me to move to something else right now and if I do move I may leave Linux altogether perhaps.

Having run email systems some 15-20 years ago for a government agency, I'm kind of on the fence about whether to bother self-hosting my own domains. It takes effort to do it correctly.

One of the things that people mention is how belligerently stupid or adversarial Google and Microsoft are to small email servers.

I think at this stage of Internet standards and evolution and email routing, etc. that now is the time to say "so what?" and if these to corps won't accept your mail then that is a problem for the recipient to (i.e. ~gmail.com, ~microsoft.com user) to resolve. Get a better email server.

The rest is just technical stuff.

I mean, email just isn't that important any more. If someone wants contact they'll figure it out. Or not. \_ (ツ)_/
